  • Looking to craft a premium chessboard using a CNC router and sheet materials? Join us in this DIY journey as we create a modern chess set using baltic birch plywood and a hobby-level CNC router. We'll dive into our design choices and crafting process, from CNCing the table frame to assembling the chess pieces.
First, we'll guide you through CNCing the table frame, painting the plywood panels, and cutting the tiles for the game field. Then, we'll tackle the challenge of designing and crafting the chess pieces, followed by trimming, sanding, and applying lacquer for a polished finish.
Assembling the chess table and pieces is a satisfying culmination of the project, showcasing the simplicity and elegance of the design. Finally, we'll walk you through making a box for the chess pieces and showcase the finished chess game.

Making all those chess pieces must have been a pawn in the neck, and painting all of that looks like a knight-mare. You certainly ain't no rook-ie when it comes to CNC work. Good job, mate!

I Like the board but I would probably use traditional chess pieces on it as I find the cutout ones all with the same outer edge distracting.

      Thank you for the feedback!
I understand your preference for traditional chess pieces, especially if you're accustomed to their shapes and sizes. Your point about the cutout pieces having the same outer edge is valid, and it’s helpful to know how different designs impact gameplay.

Can you explore into staining the plywood? Or maybe a dark oil

Thank you for the idea! Staining the ply would add more options and creative looks to our builds.

Be careful on that router table man, your fingers aren't worth a nice chess set.

You are right! We should have come up with a safer way to trim the small parts.
