I thought this was gonna be another compilation of clips of them speaking english, but turns out I was wrong. It's a very interesting topic & so well-crafted!

@@AsuraCloudwalker she barely speak vietnamese though judging by her pronounciation so she probably only speak occasionally at home with her parents. i'm quite certain that she's far more fluent in korean than she is in vietnamese now.
lol this comment reminds me of that time a friend of mine asked me why Haerin didn’t speak English much and I told her she(Haerin) didn’t even talk much in her mother tongue 😂
if you listen/watch their phoning live sessions you’ll have another pool of data. hanni frequently speaks in one language (korean) then quickly translates what she says in english or vice versa because shes just really aware that they have a international audience. great video!
Ben, this is so well done. I hope this gets a lot of views because it's a really really interesting look into their code switching. As an ESL Tutor / Tokki this is the crossover I needed LOL
Minji has this really interesting stage in English learning where she can understand and say practically anything she wants but there are slight grammar flubs and vocabulary choices that are personal and endearing.
Minji's great in Korean, English and Japanese. She even said she would've studied Linguistics in school if she continued her education. Love how endearing her English is 💕
such a cool concept! I've always noticed how often they speak english in their videos, but it was cool to see the data behind their english usage. keep up the great work!
I only got Minji and Hanni wrong but it make sense since Hanni is not only Australian but also Vietnamese so since shes not Korean she probably tries her best to speak more Korean than English, this whole video make sense and the ratings are really accurate😮❤
This was incredibly interesting and so well done. I do wonder how their code switching would differ considering a larger range of environments. For example, I think if we included their livestreams on Phoning, Hanni would probably take the top spot, as when she says something in english/korean during a livestream, she often will translate what she said into the other language. Not sure how much it would affect the data but it's an observation I had that I thought was interesting.
BRO ur editing is CRAZY GOOD- this was such a fun video and I can tell you put a lot of effort in! Idk much about NewJeans but it was interesting hearing how many times they use english.
Danielle and Minji’s case are great examples of Translanguaging. It goes beyond just code-switching back and forth between languages. The intention, interplay and nuances of how they freely use these languages is what makes their self-expressions so unique. It’s sad that many English teachers discourage learners to use their first language. If you can translanguage like New Jeans, it actually shows how fluent you are!
Minji uses English to explain to Hanni a lot and also tries without embarrassment so will learn quickly but she is not fluent definitely not fluent in English, I would agree with Danielle analysis though.
Minji actually makes sense since she's like a translator plus is always trying to include the two english girls more often in conversation. In that way, she sort of has the most reason to use english since she's proficient in it. Her love of languages just makes her use and appreciation of it even higher.
Super underrated video! 👏👏 You should maybe add '': Analyisis'' to the title, so people know its not just one of the 564 random meme videos of them speaking english here on youtube. I love geeky videos like this so much. Anyways, Minji being 2nd wasnt a surprise to me at all ahah, got it right. I feel like she's the one who code switches in the most ''intentional'' way, almost like she takes every opportunity and scenario to practice it. About her japanese, I heard she's going to take the N2 level exam, which is incredibly impressive seeing how that's the 2nd highest lvl of japanese proficiency and it means she has passed lvls 5, 4 and 3.
I got the rankings right except I switched Minji and Hanni. I though Minji was 3rd. I thought Hanni would use it 2nd most but less than Danielle at 1st for the reasons you gave. I assumed Hanni actively tries to speak Korean as opposed to English for learning purposes so itd be less switches than Danielle who was already fluent in both from childhood.
i guessed right.... only because at the beginning he says the results arent what you expect... i knew dani would be first but after he said that i thought minji would probably be ahead of hanni.
This was incredibly informative and super interesting. I had a feeling Haerin would be last.. considering how much of an introvert she really is. What caught my attention the most is how she listens to english then responds in Korean. while it is her native language, it’s super impressive to be able to interpret another language and respond in your own with complete coherency. She is by far the most interesting and unique member of the 5, while they all have their own charms, she’s just.. i dunno, she’s a mystery.
I have the same issue since I’m also an introvert. I can understand and read Korean very well, but I’m a naturally quiet person and I don’t have any Korean friends to speak with, so I’m not very confident in my speaking abilities. I imagine that’s probably how it is for Haerin. It seems like she can understand and read English really well, she’s just not as confident in speaking. Suga from BTS and Tzuyu from Twice are two other idols I can think of like that as well. I’m starting to think it’s just an introvert problem universally 😂

Also, the fact that they all understand and speak English well makes them so much more close and relatable to us international fans, knowing that we will be able to communicate with them in English if you ever have a chance to meet them in person like in a fanmeeting/fansign event.
This was such an insightful and fun video! I didn't think anyone would put in the time to study NewJeans or idols code-switching at all 😂 Very cool! Haerin's style reminds me of myself speaking my native tongue. I understand more than I can speak it so I felt seen ❤ Thanks for creating this video!

She speaks english a lot one on one with the members and probably just more comfortable like that.
Seems like Hanni is deliberately making an effort to not speak English in variety show situations so as to not stick out as the foreigner while Danielle has no such hang ups since she knows she's Korean ethnically.
I agree. Even in their recent concerts, I noticed that Hanni actively avoids throwing in even the slightest bits of English during free talk segments, whereas Dani and Minji go all in.

I personally talked to each of NJ member during a fan sign video call event. It was like one minute for each member. In fact, I can say that all of them can understand English well. It’s true that Haerin doesn’t talk much, but she became super shy when I said she is pretty. Lol! Anyways, language skills can be trained. The conversation would be more interesting if it’s in Korean though.
lol I for sure thought first place would go to either Hanni or Danielle and in my head I picked Hanni. but maybe that's because her English "outbreaks" are so much more energetic thus more prominent and memorable...? 😆after she was revealed as 3rd, I adjusted my personal ranking and got it right. btw I feel like Minji is way better in English than it sometimes seems; "sometimes" especially meaning (English) interviews. it seems like maybe she's overthinking or something...? when they're having private convos/talking casually in any of their own formats, even over longer passages her way of speaking English comes much more naturally, while in interviews she sometimes seems to slur some grammar. I think under more comfortable circumstances she definitely almost always does it properly. 민지 화이팅! 멤버들도 화이팅! ㅋㅋㅋ
like when she said "i'm interesting" instead of interested. i often hear a few non english speaking idols saying the same thing which is unfortunately the result of hearing the word incorrectly.
Awesome data analysis! Great insights! 🎉 Quite interesting that the data correlate with their personalities accurately. Hanni's case was definitely intriguing. I do argue that she might be forcing herself not to code switch and keep her dialogues largely in Korean. Just for the fact that she didn't grow up the language and had to learn it as second language. Even as on native level, she might still feel she isn't there yet. If that's the case, it is admirable. Haerin is a more common case of someone learning new languages by parroting her peers. I wouldn't be surprised if that was advised by her language teachers - I remember she was taking lessons. In the recent clips, it really paid off. Kudos to all of them for creating a bilingual environment. Sometimes trilingual as Hanni and Minji like to switch to Japanese as well.
I'm actually surprised that you found something from haerin cause she doesn't even talk much even in korean 😂 Anyway, this is a really cool and very informative video.

I live in a very bilingual part of Canada where people are constantly speaking Frenglish 😂 it's very interesting how people who are bilingual can/do switch between the two.
I’m so surprised that your video doesn’t have more viewers! I’m a new viewer and your video auto played. The quality of the content and video is top tier and I can’t wait to watch more enjoyable content from you!
They also code switch phonetically sometimes but it's mostly voluntarily (it sounds like Anglo-Saxons speaking Korean) but I haven't seen them phonetically code switch while speaking English which would totally make sense since Korean doesn't have sounds like /v/ or /f/. I guess they're just really good, bro
I really enjoyed learning about this language code-switching with NewJeans. Not only are they all pretty, it’s clear they are very intelligent! They also work very hard to be the best they can be. Wonderful work ethic to have. They truly are so easy to relate to. I’ve always liked pop music growing up & still do. Lastly I genuinely enjoy hearing Min-ji speak Korean. Her voice really draws me in so strongly I can honestly say she makes me want to learn Korean. Thank you Ben for this excellent and informative video. I wish NewJeans great success always! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I loved this and admire your dedication to spending hours on doing research! I would also be curious how this would apply to their live conversations, like in phoning lives, since there are no gaps in that sort of situation and due to the unedited format I think it would be interesting to see if the distribution would change 🤔 anyway, if you were looking for new video ideas!
This video is so damn accurate, describes every member perfectly They have 3 fluent speakers and the rest 2 will eventually become fluent as well as time goes by No wonder they are doing really well internationally as well
Wow, great video! Hey Ben, don't know if you're a fan of many other girl groups. But it would be awesome if you made this kind of video for other girl groups like Aespa, G Idle, NMIXX, Le Sserafim, Itzy, etc. I'm sure a lot of people would tune in for those!

Waiting for this to blow up ❤
This video is underrated, love ur video
this is such an interesting and well researched video !!
My fave is Danni! She is so cute, funny and I love her personality
The color coding for each member! Omg, you really went through a lot of research! love it!
as a nwjns fan and linguistics nerd this research has been so well done !
well-researched non-deranged respectful fandom content? subbed!
I would describe Dani’s English as natural too. Cool experiment!
i really really liked this video!! it really made me think as a trilingual how much i code-switch, STAN NEWJEANS
This video is so damn accurate, describes every member perfectly
They have 3 fluent speakers and the rest 2 will eventually become fluent as well as time goes by
No wonder they are doing really well internationally as well
Wow, great video! Hey Ben, don't know if you're a fan of many other girl groups. But it would be awesome if you made this kind of video for other girl groups like Aespa, G Idle, NMIXX, Le Sserafim, Itzy, etc. I'm sure a lot of people would tune in for those!
I'm working on something like that right now! 😊
Congrats to you for the discipline to count, that “bro” throw in at the end has me laughing!!
Wuow, very good vid! Insightful, scientific!
