  • A very brief look around Andrew Sharp's very rare American designed and built 1987 ATK 560. These bikes were among some of the most expensive motocross machines to buy in 1987 but nevertheless they were excellent big fourstroke racers wheich had good suspension and a bulletproof Rotax motor.

I've got a 1999 605 which was built in Utah. It came from the factory with Ohlin rear shock and Paioli (European KYB ) forks. The electric start is a must, you might get one started with the kick starter, but it isn't fun. My bike is the enduro version, lights and turn signals, same SuperTrapp muffler. So much torque, don't feel like shifting, no problem she will pull from idle to OMG with no effort. I own, and have owned many bikes, this one gets the most attention and she is a bunch of fun.

I owned and rode this ATK’s 1986 predecessor, the ‘86 Can-Am 560 Sonic, powered by the same monster 4-stroke ROTAX engine this ATK has…
This brings back memories! My Can-Am 560 Sonic and this ATK 560 look nearly identical. Back in 1986 I purchased a brand new ‘86 Can-Am 560 Sonic from a Ski-doo / Can-Am dealership in Jamestown Wyoming owned by the Jasperson brothers, Cole, Cael, and Craig Jasperson. The 560 Sonic was a big single cylinder 4-stroke thumper ROTAX monster. The thing would climb straight up without breaking a sweat. It was a BEAST with more tractable torque thru it’s entire range than any 2-wheeled machine I’ve ever ridden before or since. It had monster knobs on the rear tire and that bike literally ripped some of them off while I was climbing some of the near vertical hills of “The Palisades” which rise in sheer red cliffs along the north side of I-80 there at Jamestown just west of the town of Green River Wyoming. I never raced my Sonic (I bought it to play on for fun and for bragging rights) and put relatively few hours on the machine before selling it in near pristine condition to a friend in Arkansas about 3 or 4 years after I had purchased it. One of the reasons I didn’t ride it much was because it kicked my a** trying to kick start the beast without a compression release. I would finally get it fired up but it flat-out wore me out before I could get it lit.
1986 was the year of Can-Am’s motorcycle production swan song as they closed up shop that year and quit building bikes. ATK’s founder, Horst Leitner, then bought up Can-Am’s remaining stock of those massive torqey ROTAX engines and I assume some of the other high-quality racing parts that Can-Am had been using in the production of their 560 Sonic.
When I bought my ‘86 560 Sonic, I bought the last of the last of Can-Am bikes and can say I owned and rode one of these monsters for a little while.

These ATK's are certainly a rare beastie for sure and there's not a lot of them around now, but while you mention it I have a Canondale lined up to feature on my channel but the dreaded travel restrictions are stopping me from making the trip to film it, but hopefully get it done soon, thanks for watching.
