  • In "Sweet Virginia," directed by Jamie M. Dagg, a mysterious stranger sends shockwaves through a close-knit community in this nerve-jangling slice of raw suspense. In the wake of a triple murder that leaves the residents of a remote Alaskan outpost on edge, tightly wound drifter Elwood (Christopher Abbott) checks into a motel run by Sam (Jon Bernthal), a former rodeo champion whose imposing physical presence conceals a troubled soul. Bound together by their outsider status, the two men strike up an uneasy friendship-a dangerous association that will set off a new wave of violence and unleash Sam's darkest demons.

He is absolutely one of my new favorite dark dramatic character actors. Great in PIERCING and very impressive in POSSESSOR [UNCUT] also.

christopher abbott is a fucking maniac in this movie. Such an awkward, unpredictable unhinged performance.

I really enjoy the movie, slow, dark, intence. In some way it reminds me "cop land".

Exactly...Copland great comparison. After watching the trailer many months ago, I thought that this film would do better at the theater. Saw this flick on Showtime...well worth my time.

I really love and appreciate these grounded, raw & naturalistic dramatic thrillers. Similar to Out Of The Furnace, Blue Ruin, and Place Beyond The Pines.

@@brentulstad3275 in case you haven't heard of this one. Watch "The Standoff at Sparrow Creek". A good movie that flows in a similar vein.

Great acting. It’s a simple story. Because there wasn’t a massive gunfight and explosions in it doesn’t make it a bad movie. Your brain has been so conditioned to only be excited by “wow” factors. Not liking it is one thing, call it terrible is a completely different thing. The music and tone were chilling. If you are unable to appreciate or even recognize a well crafted slow thriller with scary psychopathic criminal terrorizing a small town and the relation to the people evolved then there is no hope for your taste in films. Use your brain

@@FalseH3 maybe a bit harsh, hehehe, but you're not wrong. People need to see more films and at least attempt to diversify their tastes toward nuance and subtle originality. So many great indie and lower budget movies in recent years, storytelling that subverts commercial expectations and use more atmospheric tension. I love these grounded & naturalistic dramatic thrillers. Similar to Out Of The Furnace, Blue Ruin and Place Beyond The Pines just to name a few. I do love a great spectacle action movie IF done in an authentic original fashion, but that's so rare and for the most part it's just formulaic predictable garbage. I understand that not everyone has the interest and patience for the slow burn drama or Arthouse Cinema, but once you can sharpen your tastes for a more sophisticated & experimental vision there's phenomenal work out there to find and appreciate. Finding certain films then leads me to others, evolving along the way, into deeper richer places I might not have grasped an appreciation for otherwise. Not trying to lecture or judge necessarily, but I am grateful for those who've turned me on to different things and challenged my previous point of view.
