I remember more people like this guy - intelligent, erudite, calm, balanced and well meaning - being a large part of the public discourse. I miss that.
I couldn't agree any more whole-heartedly ! Public discourse has deteriorated to screaming and yelling, the over-abundand use ot seledgehammer-esque vocabulary in what has become a mere melee-pit of deliberate misunderstanding and unhinged resentment, paired with often hysterical verbal agression - it's unbearable to witness!
I travelled through Hungary in 2019 and was expecting somewhere that I would like to get through as quickly as possible. I was shocked to find a very confident, beautiful, well-run country whose citizens were happy and confident in themselves, and where they lived. I would encourage anyone to visit this amazing country,
It's very kind of you to say that and you are always welcome. But your impression simply illustrates what awful stereotypes you'd had before. I don't know where you are from, but there are a lot of unfounded prejudices against "Eastern" Europe, and these "oh, this is actually quite nice" reactions only show what kind of education system and media you have. Thank you for this insightful conversation! Mr O’Sullivan not only understands perfectly Mr Orban’s vision for Hungary, but has an accurate view of us Hungarians and our history.
Greetings from Hungary. Thank you for your positive approach to my country. We are proud of our leader, Mr Orban who prioritizes the interests of Hungarian people rather than following the globalists of Bruxelles and serving the aggressive US expansion.

The next control is controlling everyone’s money hence the introduction of cashless society, people in this country need to wake up communising is creeping into our country in particular in Scotland the dictates are taking over it’s also happening in England it’s just not quite so obvious, those dingy divers are here for a purpose backed and supported by the present government.
This analysis ties up very well with my experience of Hungary and Hungarians. My partner is Hungarian and she’s lived in the UK for almost six years. I see that the longer she lives here, the more disillusioned she’s becoming with it. She certainly held England up in her estimation as a fair, polite, proud, patriotic and overall good country. She grew up in poverty during the dying years of communism and dreamed of one day living in England. After many trials and struggles in her life, she learned English by taking lessons for six months and then by reading books and she finally moved here with her two children in her late thirties. It’s sad for me to see her disappointed with England, I try to tell her that it wasn’t always like this, that those virtues she so admired were, until quite recently, present everywhere in Britain and that in many British people, they still exist. I suspect that when we retire, we will do so to Hungary, so long as peace reigns in Central and Eastern Europe. I love my country but I can’t deny that the water we swim in here is getting increasingly poisonous.
@Caravaggio, I’m hoping that my partner’s nationality will enable us to buy a small holding in Hungary, as I said before though, it’s all rather dependent on Hungary and the surrounding region remaining politically stable and safe. We are, as a society, beginning to run out of places to escape to. That’s the tragedy of Britain, this land and culture that our ancestors built, fought for and died for is being given away wholesale to those who neither respect it nor care for it. It’s heartbreaking for anyone with even the slightest sense of patriotism.
@@watermelon7998, if you look at the rate of demographic change occurring across most of the EU, leaving Britain to go to most EU countries would be of no consequence. It’s somewhat presumptuous to assume that the countries which are resisting demographic change, like Poland and Hungary, will still be in the EU in twenty five years time.
If EU was an empire that respected its borders, ethnicity, religions, free speech, free market democracy, and rejected socialism then very few people would have a problem with it.
it does respect its borders thats why UK trade to the EU has decreased since Brexit and costs have risen. EU never bothered UK in its religious affairs. EU is socialist in a broad sense of a group that look After the weaker countries by redistributing wealth.
I am Hungarian. I live in the UK and travelled a long way to be able to vote for Orban. As I live in Western Europe and see the differences between the UK and Hungary, I felt it was very important to do so. Why? His and his party's view represent values that I strongly believe in. I like that the Hungarian government try to keep Hungary safe, that they protect Europe against illegal migrants, despite all of the pressure from the EU, I love that he doesn't let Hungarian children be influenced at early ages about their sexuality, I love that he stands up for family values and holds his ground against international pressure all the time. He tries to keep Hungary's national culture and traditions in a conservative way. The western mainstream media twist and misinterpret his words all the time, trying to paint a bad picture of him and Fidesz. Saying that he is a dictator and all the Hungarian people who voted for him must be badly educated is an insult! The media in Hungary is actually very liberal and left-wing. Orban get bullied all the time, and mocked. He has several nicknames in the press, they often call him "dwarf", "potato king" etc. Would a dictator let this happen? No. He is a simply good leader and the EU doesn't like anyone who just won’t bow their heads and say yes to everything they think is a good idea. He has a backbone.
So when are you moving home? "he doesn't let Hungarian children be influenced at early ages about their sexuality" as opposed to who? what is the law in the UK?
@@watermelon7998, there is no ‘law’ in the UK but without a law against it, it is in the syllabus now, children are exposed to matters regarding sex and sexuality from primary school age. Ask yourself this, who taught you about sex and relationships? Your parents or a biological man dressed as a pantomime prostitute with an overtly sexualised nickname reading you stories? Are you a parent? How would you feel if your children were being taught about matters regarding sex and gender and you were being intentionally kept out of the discourse? Let’s be very clear here, using critical theory, it isn’t enough to be silent on the issue of institutional child grooming, you’re either a groomer or you’re an anti-groomer. As for your ‘if you don’t like it, leave’, how very gammon of you, just as you’re a closet groomer, you seem to also be a closet xenophobe.

Hungary was already occupied by Soviet forces in 1956, Hungary had not been actively waging a campaign against a minority ethnic Russian population within their borders for eight years! Yours is a weak and cliched argument.

What O’Sullivan dismisses as a curious “aristocratic tradition” in which in Hungary daughters take the religious denominations of their mothers, while sons follow that of their fathers, is how Hungarians successfully avoided the post-Reformation/schismatic sectarianism which produced much slaughter in Central Europe; and places like Northern Ireland too. You only have to look to the near South and the former Yugoslavia to know what I’m talking about.
@@davidpryle3935 On the contrary, I found Alec Ryrie’s Gresham College lecture on that very subject, for example, to be fascinating. But you’ve rather deliberately missed the point, haven’t you? Which is that it’s Mr O’Sullivan, for all his intelligence and awareness, who doesn’t know enough about Magyar religious history. The tradition he highlights, followed by Orbán’s children, far from being some “aristocratic” anachronism, has also been the norm within families in the smallest Hungarian village backwater too, since time immemorial.
What a delightful view of our tradition! As a Hungarian woman thank you for recognise us in such a lovely way! Traditions, family history are basic values of my family too. Under the communist area when these lovely traditions did not exist, woman worked in factories... the family unit weakened a great deal... Viktor Orban recognized so importantly the family unit, raising children is vital to any Country... especially in Hungary. The "glorified middle class" was a strong pillar of my Grandmother's Hungary where young lady's just like in England learnt to speak languages, music, art, and took great pleasure to be valuable in helping the less fortunate, help out in kind ways to others. The russians destroyed our elite, aristocracy. Produced a working class... Do not forget the Royal Family still have Hungarian relatives..in Romania, which was part of Hungary! Our destroyed past is valued in Hungary! History is a great teacher!
Thank you so much for defending Hungary! I have a Hungarian fiance' and according to him, what Orbán and the ruling party Fidesz succeeded in since their return to power in 2010 was to restore national pride in Hungary. Before that, when liberals were in power, it was a 'shame' to be proud of your Motherland, some people said 'Don't be so Hungarian" etc. I'm so happy to see how Hungary preserves its rich, unique culture and thrives overall.
Peter: this is a wonderfully informative, erudite and respectful discussion. Your output is vastly superior to anything the MSM has to offer. Thank you.
As a hungarian living in Romania I can completely relate to what he is saying about being fed up with communism and having an averse reaction to ideologies being forced upon you. The way he talks about Hungary warms my heart. Thank you :)
The Hungarians don't have to look at America to see the disaster of a woke society; some other countries in the EU and Britain are the examples they don't want to follow.
Oh Canada.. our country would benefit from some of these Hungarian ideas. Our national political class is so disconnected from Canadian hopes and Canadian consciousness. We want to be who we have been , not who the new fools want us to be.

The relative demographic upturn is mostly due to the Gypsies. It is estimated that in the mid-2040s, a turning point willl arrive and the Roma infants will become the majority amongst the newborn. That fact alone, combined with the state of public education, and other fundamental problems are nothing but a warning sign for an upcoming societal collapse even without a major migration crisis. Similar issues in Romania. Please also note the crude number of newborns just plummeted to a new record low in the last 2 months.

Great interview and very interesting guest. Hungary has it right. Absolutely love Victor Orban as he's keeping his people and his country safe. I'd love to live in Hungary
Hungary have chosen her king in the beginning of the seventeenth century from the Austrian nobility. This monarch was crowned by the Hungarian Holly Crown and must swear for the Hungarian constitution. In spite of this the Austrian rulers had used the country as their colony. They took al the richness of the country while they handled the Hungarian people as a lower level citizens. When nobles or the the population tried to protest against this exploitation and oppression the Austrian unmercifully butchered them! As a result about two millions Hungarian people left their country during the about three hundred years of Austrian rule! This background is the reason that the EU rulership, as they act the same way as the Austrian rulers did, could be seen very danger against Hungarian people! Hungary never colonized other countries not like the so called European Western Countries did and they again want to do insight Europe! EU want to demolish values that were values for more thousand years! They want to kill responsibility for your own act, respect and love for others and the believes that others could have different opinion and that they are not criminals if they have it while they promote hate!

The speaker mentioned something in the sense that Hungarians are isolated, all countries around them speak totally different languages. This is true as to the language, but by DNA and culture they are not much different from their neigbours. Also, he mentioned that Hungary is mostly plain, without mountains (and wealth) and therefore, not to easily defend which may lead to some anxiety (sorry, do not remember the expression he used). The history shows the opposite. Hungarians are very proud and successful people, they created their own empire, even being positioned among strong neighbours. Further, Hungarian immigrants to foreign countries, especially USA, have been on average very successful.
My mother knew the consequences of allowing mass immigration back in 1948 as soon as the British Nationality Act was passed. I could never work out whether the political class was unbelievably stupid or unbelievably evil.
John O'Sullivan, not only a clear thinking man, but someone who is also, able to articulate in a concise manner the fruits of his intellect. That those with similar traits are so lacking in the general media when we need them most, does not portend well for the ideals, professed by both sides, with varying degrees of dishonesty.
Regarding the Scots law about children and house guests dobbing people in for saying the 'wrong' thing in a private home, this was exactly what happened in Orwell's 1984 (which is well worth a re-read as I did recently, free audio version available here...). The main problem with John and the likes is that they are giving their opinion without understanding what is going on in Hungary. And this is key to understand: If you do not speak Hungarian, you can not understand what is going on in Hungary. It is as simple as that. They just have the info available in english. I respect John, he looks like an informed guy, but he does not understand shit, because the information he gets is already translated and carries the agenda of the translators. It would be so nice to see a guy like this saying: I don't know whats going on in Hungary, because I just see 5% of the info available on this topic, and that 5% is a translation.

She isn't alone in her disappointment
@Caravaggio But you see, now you can't retire elsewhere in the EU, because you voted for Brexit.

Indeed they have. Proud Magyars forever...and most resourceful.
Greater Hungary had the best borders a people could ask for. We learned firsthand what unassimilated migrants and minorities can do to a country.
Blimey! Intelligent discourse. What a pleasure to listen to.
They don't like him because he will not bow down to EU
Regarding the Scots law about children and house guests dobbing people in for saying the 'wrong' thing in a private home, this was exactly what happened in Orwell's 1984 (which is well worth a re-read as I did recently, free audio version available here...). I think as a general guide, we could safely say that any proposed policy that mirrors the state of play in 1984 should be thrown out without further discussion !!!
Overstated, if you ask me.
I wasn't sure if this subject would be be for me but as usual the NCF has provided a fascinating & informative discussion!
Sinister was the word that sums it up for me.A very wise man 👍🏻
Two great minds and speakers, what a pleasure to listen to debate like this.
Wonderful, thank you Peter. How can one get more involved in Hungary?
You could visit Hungary, very beautiful country. It has so many great spas, wine regions and ancient history. Lake Balaton is great too at summer.
I can also recommend the vineyards and farm-lands of the Káli-Basin and the lake sites of Badacsony (both at lake Balaton). There are also papers like the new 'The Hungarian Conservative' which is worth to read and it's in English.
@@istvantoth7431 Thanks so much for your reply. I've started reading 'The Hungarian Conservative' online - most interesting, and refreshing to get viewpoints ignored by the British MSM (thankfully we now have NCF and, to an extent, GBnews)
You could move there and enjoy Orban's regime in full glory, not just an outsider in the middle of the comfort of a democracy.
@@cptPerseus What is democracy, Gabor? Boris, Blair and all the failed PMs UK has had post WWII - have had less than 50% of the vote; more than 50% a la Orban would be more representative of 'democracy'
So glad we voted Brexit

Confusion over following rules and following German rule - one of the many conflations, like Franco-German Industrial interest being "European".
hungary is ahead of the west in many respect!
A wonderful guest. Thank you Sir!
It would be a rare event indeed, to see such an interview in MSM/T.V in Australia..........................well done Peter Whittle and Jon O'Sullivan.
Les Griffiths
Thank you Mr. Whittel to do this interview. Mr. O'Sullivan is seeing well how we Hungarians feel, and are in this turmoil in the World. We feel very European and would not leave the EU but would like to see them accept us as we are and see that we think for ourselves just as the English did for centuries and do it today. We admire that they left the EU as they are free thinking people but we are sorry for not having their influence in the EU anymore. However they have to govern according to the will of their own people.
Great discussion - so good to hear John Sullivan. I know personally of professionals who have lost their jobs in the UK for not having the 'correct' views of the companies who employed them. The UK has changed beyond recognition and i applaud Hungary for not going along with the rest of the damaging Woke agenda that the rest of the EU adheres to.
0:37 government is not particularly interested in your ideas
yeah, yeah only Hungarian government asked the popolus about importing tons of 3rd world migrants and asked if the control of parents regarding what they being taught about sexuality
Very, very true!
Another great dialog! Thank you. I hope Orban will have the will power and means to reform EU. If that fails UK, Poland, Hungary and other similar thinking countries can form EU2.0
Well, Orban seems to follow the Putin model, whereas Poland is deeply anti-Russian.
Wishful thinking. Not gonna happen.
Long live Brexit. The EU is the continuation of Germany by other means.
On a suicidal mission.
Germany like Britain got captured by the Global American Empire and its open borders Globalisation project in 1945. The EU is important but in or out you are still part of the Globalisation project driven by America and international finance.

Because they stand for FAMILY, FAITH, FREEDOM. God Bless Hungary led by Viktor Orban and his party. Wonderful ways to be free, but no the Socialists and weirdos of this world want to destroy it.
Despite calling himself a liberty warrior, Orbán is very deeply dependent on the German automobile industry. This is a win-win siutation as he is also helping them with low wages, non-exitstent trade unions and supportive tax polixies. They act as enemies, but in reality they are allies who work closely together.
One of the reasons why people would rather work from home , out of the stage show at work .
Very good indeed. Keep it up.

OK, wait a couple of years, they multiply like rabbits.
filling your country up with your own people not foreigners sounds extremely sensible to me, if only our politicians had the intelligence to recognise that fact.
Two first-rate men. Wish we had more of them!
What Hungary has, is lacking in Canadian politics. They have several and different parties with opposing platforms. Orban 'party claims to protect family values, no massive immigration, not let LGBTQ propaganda in the school curriculum, neutral position on Russo-Ukrain war, provide the best possible commerce, and stand up to Brussel. The opposition tells their own agenda, so people can vote who they want. They openly tell their policy to your face. In Canada, all parties are the same with different names. None of them want to curtail massive immigration, balance the budget, or would stand for moral turpitude. No matter what you vote for, you always have the same result.
I hope that all politicians will grow a backbone some day. I am glad Orban won. I voted for him.

I write from Hungary, and I am sad, when I can see, how many of western people are drinking the kool-aid of Orban. Please move here, live here - not a week or a month, but a life!
If you believe in conservative values, you will be angry very soon. Do you think, the municipality should place the street light modernisation purchase order at the best bidder, dont't you? That's the way, a conservative expect it. Well, in Hungary, this was the business, where the bids were tailored to Orban's son in-law.
If you believe in conservative values, what would you say, if you saw the leader of the opposition is allowed to speak in the STATE tv 5 minutes in 4 years?
I could continue for hours. I will not. I just warn these kind, old, conservative people: Orban is a clever juggler. A very, very clever juggler.
Finally somebody speaks the true. So many reason for many of us to leave the homeland

I think that statement is validated
Very interesting talk .Thankyou
As an old English bloke with a Hungarian wife of 25 years who goes to Hungary regularly for long periods I feel more at home there than I do in the UK even though the language is nearly impossible to learn. Bear in mind that Orban's party is seen as "far right" but the runner up party is similar to our BNP! Their "Labour" party is like our Lib Dems and is voted for mainly by people too old to adapt to not being under communism and probably urban young people that fell for the woke BS. (I'm pretty sure that Ukraine is the same BTW if you've wokishly got a Ukraine flag in your garden)
Interesting, sounds much better than Britain.
Ukraine is the only country in the world with openly nazi battalions in its army, which may be going a tad too far, perhaps. :) (And those nazis have been responsible for many of the Ukrainian war crimes over the last eight years of their civil war, and for things like the recent Bucha massacre of Ukrainians accused of collaborating with the Russians.)
Orban's party (Fidesz) is not far right at all. Far right was Jobbik (part of the opposition now.) Maybe for a leftist from the west Fidesz seems far-right but here it is the "norm". :-) Nothing "far" in it. They have zero tolerance against antisemitism, against mocking any other minorities too...
@@leventesomogyi622 That's what I meant but you just put it better. In our woke leftist "elite" West Fidesz is seen as far right (not by me or anyone else in the Kocsi) but they assume that the opposition is woke open borders LGBT left, having no idea how far the centre has been pushed left here. egészségedre.
I'd feel more at home in Hungary too. UK is another planet nowadays.
If I'm being honest, I'd vote for Francisco Franco if it meant getting rid of the left wing lunacy we've seen over the last 5 years. And I'd do it with a smile.
And that genuinely worries me. I'm starting to understand how such a thing happens, and it's not that complicated. It's just action, reaction, counter reaction.
you mean right wing lunacy of course.
this current crop of "comply or be cancelled" woke lot are using reich... ahem, i mean RIGHT wing tactics of social control.
left wingers do not care what gender someone is, but authoritarians do... and they use the right wing approach of labeling people as either in or out of the in group. those inside the group are saints... those outside the group are evil. (this is how you think as a conservative, no doubt somewhere recently in your post history you will be unironically praising some awful murderer of a prime minister [or president if you are a yank)] as a perfect person just cos he is a right winger)
this is classic right wing divide and rule tactics being used.
and you are so deluded by the right wing propaganda you think it is "left wing lunacy" that gave us this current insanity?
the tories are the ones who have been pushing it through, and since we have no left wing politicians in charge of the Labour party it is not like they are somehow controlling this.
this is all on your lot dude, the trans madness, the hate filled woke mob, cancel culture... none of it is left wing. all classic right wing society wrecking bullshit.
When the political pedulum swings back, its swings in exactly the opposite direction.
Most pleasantly informative and insightful good sir. And kind.
Guys like this are enemies
