This analysis ties up very well with my experience of Hungary and Hungarians. My partner is Hungarian and she’s lived in the UK for almost six years.
I see that the longer she lives here, the more disillusioned she’s becoming with it. She certainly held England up in her estimation as a fair, polite, proud, patriotic and overall good country.
She grew up in poverty during the dying years of communism and dreamed of one day living in England. After many trials and struggles in her life, she learned English by taking lessons for six months and then by reading books and she finally moved here with her two children in her late thirties.
It’s sad for me to see her disappointed with England, I try to tell her that it wasn’t always like this, that those virtues she so admired were, until quite recently, present everywhere in Britain and that in many British people, they still exist.
I suspect that when we retire, we will do so to Hungary, so long as peace reigns in Central and Eastern Europe. I love my country but I can’t deny that the water we swim in here is getting increasingly poisonous.

@Caravaggio, I’m hoping that my partner’s nationality will enable us to buy a small holding in Hungary, as I said before though, it’s all rather dependent on Hungary and the surrounding region remaining politically stable and safe.
We are, as a society, beginning to run out of places to escape to. That’s the tragedy of Britain, this land and culture that our ancestors built, fought for and died for is being given away wholesale to those who neither respect it nor care for it. It’s heartbreaking for anyone with even the slightest sense of patriotism.

I am Hungarian. I live in the UK and travelled a long way to be able to vote for Orban. As I live in Western Europe and see the differences between the UK and Hungary, I felt it was very important to do so. Why? His and his party's view represent values that I strongly believe in. I like that the Hungarian government try to keep Hungary safe, that they protect Europe against illegal migrants, despite all of the pressure from the EU, I love that he doesn't let Hungarian children be influenced at early ages about their sexuality, I love that he stands up for family values and holds his ground against international pressure all the time. He tries to keep Hungary's national culture and traditions in a conservative way. The western mainstream media twist and misinterpret his words all the time, trying to paint a bad picture of him and Fidesz. Saying that he is a dictator and all the Hungarian people who voted for him must be badly educated is an insult! The media in Hungary is actually very liberal and left-wing. Orban get bullied all the time, and mocked. He has several nicknames in the press, they often call him "dwarf", "potato king" etc. Would a dictator let this happen? No. He is a simply good leader and the EU doesn't like anyone who just won’t bow their heads and say yes to everything they think is a good idea. He has a backbone.

@@watermelon7998, there is no ‘law’ in the UK but without a law against it, it is in the syllabus now, children are exposed to matters regarding sex and sexuality from primary school age.
Ask yourself this, who taught you about sex and relationships? Your parents or a biological man dressed as a pantomime prostitute with an overtly sexualised nickname reading you stories?
Are you a parent? How would you feel if your children were being taught about matters regarding sex and gender and you were being intentionally kept out of the discourse?
Let’s be very clear here, using critical theory, it isn’t enough to be silent on the issue of institutional child grooming, you’re either a groomer or you’re an anti-groomer.

Hungary was already occupied by Soviet forces in 1956, Hungary had not been actively waging a campaign against a minority ethnic Russian population within their borders for eight years!

The "glorified middle class" was a strong pillar of my Grandmother's Hungary where young lady's just like in England learnt to speak languages, music, art, and took great pleasure to be valuable in helping the less fortunate, help out in kind ways to others. That fact alone, combined with the state of public education, and other fundamental problems are nothing but a warning sign for an upcoming societal collapse even without a major migration crisis. Similar issues in Romania. Please also note the crude number of newborns just plummeted to a new record low in the last 2 months.

But the EU don't like that as the expectation now is that European politicians all serve the EU agenda first and their own nations a distant second. Hungary have chosen her king in the beginning of the seventeenth century from the Austrian nobility. This monarch was crowned by the Hungarian Holly Crown and must swear for the Hungarian constitution. In spite of this the Austrian rulers had used the country as their colony. They took al the richness of the country while they handled the Hungarian people as a lower level citizens. When nobles or the the population tried to protest against this exploitation and oppression the Austrian unmercifully butchered them! As a result about two millions Hungarian people left their country during the about three hundred years of Austrian rule! This background is the reason that the EU rulership, as they act the same way as the Austrian rulers did, could be seen very danger against Hungarian people! Hungary never colonized other countries not like the so called European Western Countries did and they again want to do insight Europe! EU want to demolish values that were values for more thousand years! They want to kill responsibility for your own act, respect and love for others and the believes that others could have different opinion and that they are not criminals if they have it while they promote hate!

The speaker mentioned something in the sense that Hungarians are isolated, all countries around them speak totally different languages. This is true as to the language, but by DNA and culture they are not much different from their neigbours. Also, he mentioned that Hungary is mostly plain, without mountains (and wealth) and therefore, not to easily defend which may lead to some anxiety (sorry, do not remember the expression he used). The history shows the opposite. Hungarians are very proud and successful people, they created their own empire, even being positioned among strong neighbours. Further, Hungarian immigrants to foreign countries, especially USA, have been on average very successful.

Despite calling himself a liberty warrior, Orbán is very deeply dependent on the German automobile industry. This is a win-win siutation as he is also helping them with low wages, non-exitstent trade unions and supportive tax polixies. They act as enemies, but in reality they are allies who work closely together.

What Hungary has, is lacking in Canadian politics. They have several and different parties with opposing platforms. Orban 'party claims to protect family values, no massive immigration, not let LGBTQ propaganda in the school curriculum, neutral position on Russo-Ukrain war, provide the best possible commerce, and stand up to Brussel. The opposition tells their own agenda, so people can vote who they want. They openly tell their policy to your face. In Canada, all parties are the same with different names. None of them want to curtail massive immigration, balance the budget, or would stand for moral turpitude. No matter what you vote for, you always have the same result.

I write from Hungary, and I am sad, when I can see, how many of western people are drinking the kool-aid of Orban. Please move here, live here - not a week or a month, but a life!
If you believe in conservative values, you will be angry very soon. Do you think, the municipality should place the street light modernisation purchase order at the best bidder, dont't you? That's the way, a conservative expect it. Well, in Hungary, this was the business, where the bids were tailored to Orban's son in-law.
If you believe in conservative values, what would you say, if you saw the leader of the opposition is allowed to speak in the STATE tv 5 minutes in 4 years?
I could continue for hours. I will not. I just warn these kind, old, conservative people: Orban is a clever juggler. A very, very clever juggler.

As an old English bloke with a Hungarian wife of 25 years who goes to Hungary regularly for long periods I feel more at home there than I do in the UK even though the language is nearly impossible to learn. Bear in mind that Orban's party is seen as "far right" but the runner up party is similar to our BNP! Their "Labour" party is like our Lib Dems and is voted for mainly by people too old to adapt to not being under communism and probably urban young people that fell for the woke BS. (I'm pretty sure that Ukraine is the same BTW if you've wokishly got a Ukraine flag in your garden)

Interesting, sounds much better than Britain.
Ukraine is the only country in the world with openly nazi battalions in its army, which may be going a tad too far, perhaps. :) (And those nazis have been responsible for many of the Ukrainian war crimes over the last eight years of their civil war, and for things like the recent Bucha massacre of Ukrainians accused of collaborating with the Russians.)

If I'm being honest, I'd vote for Francisco Franco if it meant getting rid of the left wing lunacy we've seen over the last 5 years. And I'd do it with a smile.
And that genuinely worries me. I'm starting to understand how such a thing happens, and it's not that complicated. It's just action, reaction, counter reaction.

    • @atee876

you mean right wing lunacy of course.
this current crop of "comply or be cancelled" woke lot are using reich... ahem, i mean RIGHT wing tactics of social control.
left wingers do not care what gender someone is, but authoritarians do... and they use the right wing approach of labeling people as either in or out of the in group. those inside the group are saints... those outside the group are evil. (this is how you think as a conservative, no doubt somewhere recently in your post history you will be unironically praising some awful murderer of a prime minister [or president if you are a yank)] as a perfect person just cos he is a right winger)
this is classic right wing divide and rule tactics being used.
and you are so deluded by the right wing propaganda you think it is "left wing lunacy" that gave us this current insanity?
the tories are the ones who have been pushing it through, and since we have no left wing politicians in charge of the Labour party it is not like they are somehow controlling this.
this is all on your lot dude, the trans madness, the hate filled woke mob, cancel culture... none of it is left wing. all classic right wing society wrecking bullshit.

The main problem with John and the likes is that they are giving their opinion without understanding what is going on in Hungary. And this is key to understand: If you do not speak Hungarian, you can not understand what is going on in Hungary. It is as simple as that. They just have the info available in english. I respect John, he looks like an informed guy, but he does not understand shit, because the information he gets is already translated and carries the agenda of the translators. It would be so nice to see a guy like this saying: I don't know whats going on in Hungary, because I just see 5% of the info available on this topic, and that 5% is a translation.
