    Thanks for the review! I bought this and the Leaf Supreme Pro at the local Best Buy based partly on your reviews.
    I'm just 13 miles from broadcast towers but have multipath due to hills and unfortunately can't install an outdoor antenna since I'm renting. The Leaf Supreme Pro was pulling in a too strong and noisy signal and couldn't get any channel to lock. The non-amplified Leaf worked much better for my situation but there was still one channel (ION) that would constantly drop out later in the day.
    I took a chance and ordered the Channel Master Flatenna for $10 (+ $7.50 shipping) and was pleasantly surprised to find that it works much better than the Mohus. Per the HDHomeRun stats, signal quality on the UHF channels improved from 60-70% on the Leaf to 75-90% on the Flatenna. It was also able to pull VHF channels 7, 9, 11 & 13 that the Leaf didn't. Alas, the VHF weren't particularly watchable. Still, performance was very impressive for an indoor antenna considering the extremely affordable price tag. I highly recommend it as a less expensive alternative to the Mohu Leaf.

    I used the Mohu Leaf when I lived about 35 miles northeast of Austin, and it worked well. I not only received all of the major network affiliates out of Austin, but I also would occasionally pick up one of the network affiliates out of Waco. Because of where the main TV was situated in the house, I had the antenna on a wall in the middle of the bottom floor of my house; not ideal but still picked up those stations.
    The only one that was iffy was FOX Austin, which was over VHF channel 7. Years later, after having learned about what type of elements are required to pick up UHF and which ones are required for VHF, I realize why I had trouble picking up FOX consistently.
    I would definitely recommend this antenna to anyone living in a major metropolitan area, though be wary of any VHF channels you hope to pick up.

    I bought one of these several years ago based on Amazon reviews. We have steel siding and our market stations show as "Fair" or "Poor" in the link that the Antenna Man refers to. During windy, snowy or rainy conditions, most stations pixelate a great deal, but in normal conditions, we get the "Fair" stations pretty well. The antenna is located on the 2nd floor.

    I bought 2 of these for friends living in assisted living facilities near Chester. They each get 28 channels including WPVI which really is a bugger. Others living in this facility cannot get WPVI so they have asked me to obtain and hook up this antenna for them. Working on that, its so simple, charge them nothing, and in many cases saving them 77.00 a month for the offered building cable tv. Yes this is much better than the cheap Amazon flat antenna that I have trash 10 already. Saving our older seniors over 800.00 a year in cable costs.

    You said "this antenna is not really meant for VHF signals" but on the Mohu Leaf website, it states that this antenna can receive both VHF and UHF signals.

    I bought and returned 3 other indoor antennas, because they only pulled in a few channels. I bought this after watching your review and it is amazing! I have it upstairs on my dresser (horizontally) and connected to both our bedroom TV and downstairs living room TV. It pulls in EVERY local channel! We are north of you, north of Scranton, in a rural area.

    I have a Mohu leaf antenna in my basement. It gets every OTA channel in the area of Des Moines, IA. On our main floor, it pulls in fewer channels. We have aluminum siding. Seems odd that our best reception is below ground level. But I’m happy with it.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It might be electrical interference that is weakening your signal on the first floor versus the basement. It's all about antenna placement when it comes to TV reception. I've had the instance where a guy pulls and more channels outside his door then on the third floor roof.

  • @canadianpsycho1867
    @canadianpsycho1867 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Amplified antennas don’t have as much electrical interference and will give you a more stronger stable signal. They also have to use an actual coaxial cable not a thin as paper one that tears easily like most flat antennas have.

    Those mohu leaf antennas work well if you are within 20-25 miles from the broadcast source. That was the case when I was living in a ground floor apartment in 48307 and luckily all but the Fox affiliate were UHF. Oddly enough it was the CW that would sometimes pixelate. The model I used was the Leaf 50 and I used the usb powered amp.

      That means for me that I could pick up Farnsworth Peak as they are about 20 miles away from me in the Salt Lake City, Utah market. For you in Rochester, Michigan, you would have probably needed a set of traditional rabbit ears to pick up WJBK (virtual channel 2, broadcast channel 7).

    Mohu makes great antennas. They have an outdoor model called the Sail which is mast mountable. I'm in Sebring, FL and have one mounted on a 40' mast, aimed at roughly 250 degrees azimuth. Last scan yielded 100 channels: everything out of Tampa, everything out of Ft. Myers, and a couple that frankly I don't know where they are. Lots of duplicates between the markets, but that comes in handy during Florida thunderstorms.

I picked up more channels with the little telescopic antenna that was in the box with the tuner. The Amazon flat antenna is junk. The !little telescopic one is surprisingly good for what it is.

    I've had this model for about five years and I've been pretty pleased with it. I added the amplifier they sell which helps quite a bit. However, Tyler is exactly right in that It can struggle some with High VHF. Our CBS affiliate is on RF 7 and can be problematic at times...especially Spring and Summer. I may try the Clearstream 2 Max after our Repack Rescan happens in a couple of weeks to see if I can do a little better with High VHF. Great video, as usual.

    I'm 17 miles from towers, but in heavily wooded area. Some of the 17 channels had 2 bars on the Azunx antenna. The Mohu CUT the signal to 1. I'm returning it. I can't promise you will get a better signal this way, BUT, I went from 2 bars to 4 with the RG Tech Booster (Amazon) which also seems to block interference (eg, when I turn on my DVD recorder, I would lose signals, but not now with the booster). Finally, some of us remember rabbit ears, UGH. In time, it will get better. :D

    The Mohu Leaf works great for us. (I think we have the Leaf 50.) But it's important to position it correctly for certain stations. For a particular station that broadcasts from about 50 miles away, I have to put the antenna in just the right position (preferably in front of the window) to pick up the station.

  • @BobbieGWhiz
    @BobbieGWhiz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks. Do you ever open these antennas up to see what’s inside. A far as i know UHF antennas are just metal circles or bow ties. In the old days, that’s what you would clip on to your rabbit ears for UHF reception. I bought a cheap flat panel antenna with a skinny coaxial cord that came with an amplifier. The panel is clear, so you can see that its basically a bow tie with extra elements inside that make it look fancier. It gets most of my stations, most of the time including 2 high VHF channels. I’d love more consistent reception, but I’m not sure what a more expensive UHF antenna has over a cheap one. Thanks for your time.

I think it was once a DirecTV (R5 or R6) cable but the reception & strength got a bit better. Just using the white cable I got 16- 24 channels but with the better black cable I got from 35-62 channels. It would say 62 but 42 channels of those channels would come in clear.

    2:22 I assume when they throw around phrases like "advanced military technology" they mean it's a fractal antenna, based on a technology that it certainly used by the military, but also now in RFIDs and cell phones. Not everyone agrees on the pros and cons of fractal technology, but it certainly packs whatever capability the antenna has into a smaller package than with more straightforward antenna designs.

    Good point about the "military" comparison. I had a guy from an alarm company trying to sell me on wireless burglar alarms - which I was not interested, I wanted a wired alarm. (This is for my work - which is a huge 2 story building) He claimed the wireless technology they used was approved by the NSA. LOL !!! He out-right refused to give us a price on a hard wired system. It ended with me calling security to escort him off property. I wound up pulling all the wire myself than handed off all the pairs (20 zones) to an alarm technician.

    Just a thought, Tyler. I think most buildings/houses today use vinyl siding as opposed to aluminum. Vinyl is pretty much maintenance-free whereas aluminum isn't. Maybe it's more prevalent in your area but up here where I live, CT, almost all houses I see use Vinyl siding, my house included. This also brings me to another thought. Would aluminum siding make a descent antenna? It is an outside material and the material does consist of metal. That would be a huge antenna, I would think. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aluminum siding as an antenna would not work well because the length would not be optimal for TV reception. UHF signals need a length about 8 inches VHF TV signals need something around three to six feet. It also needs to be very thin like a whole rather than a flat solid aluminum strip. Aluminum siding is very popular in my area and pretty much destroys the TV stations inside.

    Can this be combined with cable? I don't get all the local channels with my cable so removed their DTA box & I am going back & forth between air & cable in order to get some of the local channels. I don't know why I don't get them with the cable. I've complained several times...seems to work for awhile & then they disappear. I thought if I could combine this, I could get the two major networks I'm not getting along with my cable. Eventually, I want to cut the cord when I get a newer TV. Will a splitter/combiner work?

    Would it be possible to use a longer (30’?) coax cable with this antenna? Would this cause significant degradation of the signal?

    • @AntennaMan

      Yes, you can attach a longer cable. As long as you use a good quality RG6 quad shield cable it shouldn't impact the signal. Don't buy any coax cable from Walmart. You can find a list of recommended cables below: www.amazon.com/shop/antennaman/list/4RBGOO8SD5CC

    I recently installed a roof antenna with a channel master pre-amplifier. In another video you said you should add rubber boots to the connections. Should I bother going back on the roof to add them or will I be OK without them? They were not included in the package. (I should also mention the connections are being reused from a professional install of a DISH, so possibly they are already weatherproof?)

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would not be a bad idea to add them or get some silicone. Both will keep out moisture and prevent rusting on the coaxial cable ends. This can happen over the course of 5 to 10 years if there is no seal around them.

      If you have a relatively weak signal it can can come and go due to atmospheric or weather conditions. Or you could be getting intermittent interference from some sort of electronic device or from cell phone or other transmissions in your area. Usually, if you are getting this type of performance from an indoor antenna an antenna either on your roof or in your attic would usually give solid results.

      You are in the scenario when I say do not let the antenna take credit for your reception scenario. Obviously you reception is better than what many other people have said. I have test this model in the past. It simply would not pick up stations that directional models have picked up so I we sold it about 2 years ago when I first start testing antennas. Since then I have had a lot of people email me about this model asking for a better model. A small directional model will work better than it so it has no use on my channel at least until they add some VHF elements to it.
