  • In this video I went fishing with Trey Landry for choupique also known as bowfin, grendel, or dogfish. We set out to prove this fish is plenty good enough to eat despite its reputation as a trash fish.

My wife grandfather was born in a trapper's cabin in Terrebonne parish and trapped and fished for a living all of his life, my wife and I lived next door to them when we were first married, and we ate some very good dishes that were things most people turn away from. Choupique was one of my favorites either fried or the patty's another was gar fish in Boulette's or patty's. Love the videos Jarred and the south Louisiana flavor by the way a palanc not sure of the spelling is a trout line we used to put out 2 to 3 hundred yards of them baited with salted pig ears when I was akid with my great grandfather for crabs to sell. good cajun memories.

From Houma, La been I’m 37 years old been eating choupic all my life my great grandparents ate choupic from Thibodaux and vacherie. Still can’t believe people from south Louisiana is still sleeping on choupic. I remember when people would only catch the fish for the eggs for Cajun caviar

I know its old video, but I presure canned one years ago. In the jar this fish looked like some pics of pink salmon, beautiful. We have canned them all, catfish, crappie, and grinned, thChickanic ats what we called them. Open the jar, mix with spices, meal and make patties. Good to go.

Great video.. I am from here and grew up not far from Chackbay , I was always told the mustard helps to flavor it because some have a mud taste. The mustard takes that taste away. I haven't been fishing in years now and miss it. We use to use cane poles instead of rod and reels and it was more fun for me. I tried the rod and reels but the poles were more fun..

My Mother's family in north central Florida would trotline 'em out of the Alapaha river to add to a fish fry. They called them jackfish. They considered them to be a delicacy. I've eaten a fair amount when I was a kid and thought they were really good.
