@@silenthillarchives Apologies if you already knew this, but Taikenban (体験版) is often literally translated as "Trial Version" or localized as "Demo". Your pronunciation of the word was good, so I was surprised when you mentioned you do not understand Japanese. (Thanks to seykai for giving you the translations you requested.) Thanks for the video, fun to see the differences between the demos. I have the EU and JA versions, thankfully they were maybe $10 when I bought them!
6:02 it's not just a picture with men in suits it's the scene from Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino. I think the picture on a top is also from some movie but I couldn't understand what it might be
It's not really a big deal, but it looks like you've got an emulation error in some of the footage, the trees all have white outlines around them, so I figured I'd let you know how to fix it if you don't mind. It's caused by the texture filtering setting (under "Graphics" in Duckstation), to fix it either set it to "Nearest Neighbor" (basically no texture filtering, iirc that's the most accurate setting to original hardware), or any of the settings that say "No Edge Blending". It's basically blending the pixels just beyond the edge of the transparency mask into the visible parts of the texture, so the white background that's supposed to be masked off is bleeding into the tree card, creating a white outline. At least, that's the case in Duckstation, I can't comment on the others since Duckstation is leagues better than the other PS1 emulators imo and I only use it, but if EPSXE and others handle texture filtering the same way I can't imagine fixing it is too dissimilar. Great video by the way! It's really interesting seeing the differences between various versions of these old games.
@@retromintman8450 Took me a bit to figure out how to get that running, turns out it doesn't exist on the PAL version which was what I was playing. Guess I'm going to have to restart the game now lol. It looks like you need to turn on "Enable Clock Speed Control" under "Console" and crank it up until it stays at 60 FPS. Do you have that turned on? Seems stable on my end, doesn't stay at 60 FPS all the time but it's mostly just above or below it. I do get a crazy high FPS on the loading screens though, like 500+, and the snow falls faster, but otherwise it seems fine so far.
@@retromintman8450 A few side notes since I just beat the game using the cheat: Don't use the "Unlock FPS" cheat, I was messing with it too and while you can get a higher FPS than 60, it completely bricks the cutscene that introduces Dahlia, making it unwatchable, and then it corrupts the game afterwards, requiring you to restart the system. It also causes the inventory to load very slowly, really annoying. While the 60 FPS patch doesn't do any of that, it will cause some freezes during a few cutscenes, but you can either turn it off while it's frozen to fix it or revert to a savestate, turn it off and let it play out that way, then turn it back on afterwards. It's a good idea to keep setting down savestates even if you don't want to use them for this reason. It only happened a couple times for me though. Also, for the overclock setting, bump it up very slowly until it's stable at 60, it might not be a good idea to just crank it up higher than it needs to be, find the lowest setting possible for a stable 60 FPS. I felt like I should've mentioned that first tbh. I also have Emulation speed set to 100% [60 FPS (NTSC)/50 FPS (PAL)]. I think that might be necessary but I didn't test it. I also have VSync, Sync to Host Refresh Rate and Optimal Frame Pacing turned on, which made it buttery smooth on my end. The latter might hinder performance on lower end systems though. Hopefully that's at least somewhat helpful lol. Thanks for inadvertently letting me know the 60 FPS cheat exists btw, playing through the game again with all these enhancements was an absolute treat, it holds up really well.
@Big_Money_Salvia Thanks for the heads up! I didn't get to try this last night since my niece came over. But I'll aim to attempt this tonight. I'll see what exactly my settings are. I remember from last time that the alley scene was in 60 frames, but other than that the framerate would remain mostly the same even with the cheat on.
Demos were part versions of a game people could play before the full version was released and they were free… so basically they are equivalent to what the 1 day release of modern games are except it costs $70.
I thought I'd mention the other big difference on the OPM 16 map is "Wrightwood" not "Old Silent Hill" and "Midwich Elementaly School" not "Midwich Elementary School" also in the game files there is an older map of the school with a principal's office and boiler room on the 1st F. Nice vid.
I had played the OPM demo when it came out in ‘99. It got me so hyped for the release, it was such a great demo. Being able to play through the whole school was a treat. It’s pretty common knowledge now, but its noteworthy that the demo for the school had the extra weapon of a hammer that wasn’t released in the main game because it was thought that using it on children was inappropriate.
I was introduced to Silent Hill franchise by a demo disc that came with the EU version of MGS for the PS1. It was a bit different as the final version. For example, the grey children enemies were waving bread knives instead of the long claws they had in the launch version.
I was introduced to Silent Hill via the EU demo. It came with MGS when I rented it from Blockbuster. I remember in the school, the name of the room would appear on screen when you enter.
In the UK the Silent Hill demo came bundled with Metal Gear Solid. A genius move from Konami as that must have been the best selling game of 98. I got to experience two of my favourite gaming franchises simultaneously.
Legitimately miss demo discs 😪😭 I remember as a kid it was so cool to play upcoming games. Plus as a kid they’re like full games with kid logic HAHA cool to hear the unused media :0 it’s crazy how much media was released and almost lost. Awesome video as always :)
I remember on that back of my Metal Gear Solid instruction manual having a picture of Sybil advertising it. I being a huge Resident Evil fan back then rented it. Buut it went over my 9 year old ADHD mind at the time lol. I beat it in my 20s though, sad to say I missed 2 and 3.
Great video I discovered the game at 9 years old just by going over to a friend's house who had a modded PlayStation and just throwing in any random disc we could find and it absolutely terrify me nothing ever made me feel like that because it almost felt like there was something wrong with the game or it was like something scary it was just such a unique feeling even though it scared the crap out of me for months I mean it made me love the series
I remember getting the EU demo with MGS1, came in a double jewel case and the demo was in the front section, where typically the main game CDs would reside. I initially thought they'd shipped the wrong game in the box, lol. It would be the only encounter I had with SH for a long time though as that initial section where you're trapped and killed at the start was pretty disturbing to young me, didn't end up revisiting (and ultimately loving) SH1 until after I finished SH2 years later!
I recently got the taikenban version. Now it sits on my shelf displayed next to my other ps1 games :D Since its still sealed idk if I'll ever open it..
Final versions for Japan and Europe also have a glitch fixed that's present in the US Final version. The glitch wouldn't allow you to find the missing newspaper clip from the hospital in the nowhere level.
Didn't know that the demo has the opening part of the game (go after Cheryl), I always thought that was just the school and that's it. Now it makes me wonder... Does the "bypass the barrier glitch" will work on the demo?. For those who don't know, it's a glitch of make Harry do two steps back (down + square) and press select (item menu) in an exact moment for bypass the barrier of the line "I'd better follow Cheryl...". Doing that it let you explore the city early but still there is not much to do. Now with the demo it would be interesting to know if the city is fully developed or maybe has anything different.
The bypass glitch does work in all the demos, and the earlier versions do have some texture differences compared to final game (such as phone numbers on signs that were removed). The entirety of Old Silent Hill is modeled though
would the Gameshark codes to wall through walls for the complete game work on the demo? if so I'd explore the hell outta that but I haven't used GS codes in so long I don't remember how that works
I had an european demo disk of silent hill. In this version, the grey child were not censored yet. However, instead of making the slowed down baby noises, they growled like the mumblers in the realease version. I found that to be really scary.
