How to Ink Superhero Comics Like a Pro in Clip Studio Paint

  • Inking comics is weird. You have a nice pencil drawing and now you've gotta throw all those nice lines away and put NEW lines down. What's up with that?
    In this video, we're going to demystify inking, show you the tools most comic artists use to ink their superhero comics, and do some Clip Studio Paint demos on how to replicate those tools digitally.
    Clip Studio Paint is partnering with me for this video, which is awesome! Check out my accompanying article on their site: www.clipstudio...

    What inking tips did I miss?

    • @natalyar3599
      @natalyar3599 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Scott, thanks again for your videos! I'm just wondering how do you prefer to ink your characters located in dark environments? I mean inking them in black on the dark backgrounds doesn't seem to be a good idea, I suppose it should be like light grey or something, but what about the details? Sorry for this silly question, I'm just beginning with all this stuff and would like to know your experienced opinion ^^

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@natalyar3599 This is a great question! I think the answer I would give you is to think about Rim Lighting! When inking (or penciling for your inks), look up some reference for rim lighting. When inking brightly-lit subjects, the dark parts are minimized because of the ambient light. In dark areas, however, there isn't much light, but it's still there, casting much larger shadows. Basically, try to find the areas that that little amount of light is hitting and ink around that! I usually use a lot of reference for darkly-lit scenes to find where highlights go, and where I should black out details. Hope that helps!

    • @laifu6317
      @laifu6317 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you suggest keeping an "even" distance from the pencils for the entire inking process? Do you ever zoom/rotate etc?

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@laifu6317 Yes, I would! I try to keep a set distance from my pencils when I ink so that my had motions are consistent and I have an even amount of detail in my lines. If you zoom in and out a bunch, you'll get areas that are really detailed and areas that feel glossed over. I do rotate a ton, though! I didn't really in this video because it makes for a nicer timelapse, but pros rotate their canvas and paper all the time to get the best angle for their arm to throw their lines. Hope that helps!

    • @laifu6317
      @laifu6317 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScottD It does, I do feel as though I have a little less control if I can't zoom, but I guess that comfort comes with mileage.

    What amazes me is the lack of zoom-in, it seems that it really helps in making the piece less messy and, how should i put it, spacious. There is a lot of breathe, free space that crates volume.

    Thanks for making this. Sometimes I get frustrated that the advice I've needed has been right here on the internet for over a year and the algorithm just now decided to go "this? I dunno. "
    Your reaction to oversizing the g-pen was priceless.
    Like a few others here, I had completely forgotten about the India Ink subtools as they are under brushes, and not pens. I've seen so many "tutorials" on how to get the G-Pen to stop making weird pointy-tails and of course none of them work because it's not meant to work that way.

    I use a variant of the G-Pen with a little added flexibility, accomplished by adjusting its Pen Pressure Curve. I also put some Stabilization on it, like 50% (or whatever the number stands for). Finally, I always ink on a Vector Layer, for all of the magical goodness THAT approach brings to the party. I use this one G-Pen for everything organic. But call me crazy.

Example using inks that are dark, on a dark story may be to much. So might want to use a g-pen to allow light into the characters an keep things from being so dark.

    Thank you ! but i have a question, where i find the indian ink smooth? :O

      In the Brush Tool, thee are a few Subtools: Watercolor, Oil Paint, India Ink, etc. I moved mine, which I admit is pretty confusing! Just select the Brush Tool and choose India Ink in the SubTool palette. Hope that makes sense!

    are you using vector layers to ink?

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not. I’ve been using raster layers for inking for like 20 years, so I’m too set in my ways to change now. Haha But I do see people having a lot of success with them, and the ability to clip the little ends off lines seems really cool. I just prefer to have the more “hand-drawn” look possible, and for me, that means using the raster inks, even if that’s at the expense of looking super clean.

    So I've been using the g-pen all wrong this entire time. That's good to know

      Haha if it works for you, it works! This is just what I've found that works for me (and some advice that I've gotten that has really helped). :)

      @@ScottD oh no, I've been having issues with using the G-pen for awhile now and I always wondered why it looked so wonky, and now thanks to your video I Know why. So thank you.

    Hey this is a great video and loved all the tips. However, their is some kind of feedback/echoing going on with your mic and it gave me a huge headache. I have really sensitive ears, so honestly I'm sure not very many people heard it. Just wanted to put that out their if some one every complains about your audio, otherwise awesome content brother!!!

      Ah dang! Sorry to hear it! I got a new mic for some more recent videos. I know that my audio is definitely something that needs finessing, but I'm doing my best over here! haha :)

    I’m so confused how you’re using a 30 size with that size canvas and your stroke isn’t ginormous. Your 30 looks like my 3 or 5.

      I suspect I'm using Pixels and you're using Millimeters for sizing. You can change it in the CSP settings.

    Hello friend, I would like to have these pens you made, but I don't have a credit card ... could I do a donation via Paypal and receive the pens?

      No worries! If you just put in "0" when checking out, you can get them for free. The $2 is just suggested. :)

    The techno beat on loop in the background is incredibly annoying.
