I've been an O/O for just over 5 months. Went to local company for CDL school and 1 yr contract. Quit on last day of contract and bought used Cascadia off Facebook marketplace cash. Leased on to a company and renting their stepdeck trailer. I mostly work in the same state. 70% oversized loads 30% everything else. Low overhead, live within your means. Save money. Alex the trucker was my inspiration to quit my desk job and start driving.
The problem with trucking is the drivers. The low mentality, not knowing the value of this skill, continually settling for these weak wages and rates!!! It’s time to come together and get this money up!!!
In all honesty trucking helped get me out of the situation I was in there’s always pros and cons to everything but as long as you have a plan and stick with it you can accomplish whatever as far as money you can definitely make a good amount of money it just depends on your situation
I feel your pain brother. I’ve been driving with my CDL for over 25 years and you need to know what you are getting into when you do trucking. First thing you have to be ready for break downs. Research the business before starting something. There is money 💰 out there. You have to go get it. Me for sure I was blessed with the opportunity to be a full time mobile mechanic. So I don’t have to drive trucks anymore. I’m a fleet tech for the same company I drove trucks for. So I understand what you are talking about. I have friends that drive trucks and I’ve seen them struggle with this industries.
Me personally. I was working as a yard dog in tn. I was married home every night and made decent money. Now I'm going through a divorce and back over the road. By the end of the year I plan on buying my own truck and starting working for myself. I will say I'm very thankful for My CDL. Being back out on the road. I love it. Anyway I've been driving since 2013. Something I always say to people when they ask me about trucking. I tell them having your CDL is like having the Golden ticket from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. You will always have a job no matter what your situation is and you will have multiple opportunities as well.
I'm glad that to hear that someone who has been in trucking for a while is actually still considering becoming an o/o. I am considering getting a cdl and after a year becoming and o/o. So do you still feel as though it's profitable?
I'm a mechanic planning on getting my cdl there were many factors that went into the decision but over all i wasnt making the money i wanted to make as a mechanic. I drive i like to drive love seeing different places if im not working im sitting in my room anyway i like being alone its a life style that works well with me. i have had friends who drive and have done well for them selves so seeing people from your past killing it played a role.
I started driving after I retired from the Army. My brother has been in the trucking business for a while. It was ok when I first started but now it is horrible with these low rates. The brokers seems like they are making more than me and they are not the ones out working in this heat and fighting traffic.
Thanks for your transparency. I have been on the same job for 17 years and im considering getting a cdl, driving for company for a short time then paying cash for a truck to become a local o/o. I want to be home every night. I was really excited to come across your video because your doing exactly what I am trying to accomplish.
Trucking is tough this first year after that its easy like sunday morning 🌄. Go local, gotta get your feet wet and do otr for 2 years before you can usually get a good local gig, but its worth it
I went from co driver to o/o and considering going back to co driver. I’ve made a lot of money as both but now I don’t see the return with being an o/o.
The mind game in trucking. Bingo! In the 60s and 70s, American travel was a paradise on Earth, with a very few idiot drivers or crazies,...you could literally count on one hand in a year. But today's motoring mental climate is horrendous. I now leave the travel-stop after a refreshing reset, and collected my thoughts for a brutal OTR load. Enter the interstate only to begin being F'd with by 80% of the traffic! Bingo!, the mental stress of today's driving is unbearable. Passive aggressive messing with each other is a deadly game. And it needs to stop. A state trooper once told me, "just remove yourself from the road rage, exit and get a cup of coffee." But after 5-6 cups of coffee and exiting, then restroom breaks, I'll miss my appointment drop time!! Lol! God help us all!
I got my CDL in 1981. I've been trucking off and on since. I still have my CDL. The trucking industry is exactly like the rap game. A bunch of scandalous mf's who look at us as being extremely dumb and gullible.. I got some stories to tell. I love trucking because I've always been into cars and naturally I was drawn to trucks. Trucking is a scandalous business. The brokers are ripping you off, DOT in your pocket, shippers don't wanna pay for wait time after 2 hours and on and on and on. Carriers treat you like Forest Gump. They don't wanna pay for layovers or wait time, but they're getting paid for the truck sitting, but won't pay you. And don't get me started about the lease purchase scheme and scam. I almost got caught up with that BS. Brand new truck, fresh paint, lights and chrome. I almost fell for the oaky doke. The trucking industry preys on the drivers like a mf.. You'd be a zip damn fool to get caught up with a devils contract with a lease purchase. Like they say. "A sucker is born every minute". This is Atom Ant, Peyton place, mud base, tower of power come-on. We 10-8, 10-10, we gone back on out til we do it again. We slip sliding, ambulance riding. We coming in wall to wall tree top tall. There are a lot of different niches in trucking. Completely separate than o.t.r mega carrier general freight. The niches are where the money is. A lot has changed though, since i started in 92, a completely different game. The best trucking isnt in the trucking industry, but in companies that use trucks in their business.
My cousin got me into trucking, but i started a couple of years before the pandemic. It's still money to be made, but not like it used to be. Truckers do not run the market anymore. That's why the money is low. Time to readjust and weather the storm or step aside.
