- Chess (B&B) - One Night In Bangkok
[THE AMERICAN]
Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world in a
Show with everything but Yul Brynner
Time flies -- doesn't seem a minute
Since the Tirolean spa had the chess boys in it
All change -- don't you know that when you
Play at this level there's no ordinary venue
It's Iceland -- or the Philippines -- or Hastings -- or --
or this place!
[COMPANY]
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
And if you're lucky then the god's a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me
[THE AMERICAN]
One town's very like another
When your head's down over your pieces, brother
[COMPANY]
It's a drag, it's a bore, it's really such a pity
To be looking at the board, not looking at the city
[THE AMERICAN]
Whaddya mean? Ya seen one crowded, polluted, stinking town --
[COMPANY]
Tea, girls, warm, sweet
Some are set up in the Somerset Maugham suite
[THE AMERICAN]
Get Thai'd! You're talking to a tourist
Whose every move's among the purest
I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine
[COMPANY]
One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me
[THE AMERICAN]
Siam's gonna be the witness
To the ultimate test of cerebral fitness
This grips me more than would a
Muddy old river or reclining Buddha
And thank God I'm only watching the game -- controlling it --
I don't see you guys rating
The kind of mate I'm contemplating
I'd let you watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you
So you better go back to your bars, your temples, your massage
parlours --
[COMPANY]
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
A little flesh, a little history
I can feel an angel sliding up to me
One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me
I'm a huge ABBA fan and all my neighbors and friends used to make fun of me for being a pop fan. But when in the 90s they danced at discos to Bangkok from Chess, I told them that it was written by the composers and soloists of ABBA, they took me for a crazy person, but later, when I showed them a video of Benny, Frida, Bjorn and Karin singing , they were stunned that ABBA could write and sing such a thing. It was the most popular hit of the 90s. Now all my friends began to understand what a musical legacy ABBA made in the development of the world's musical art. This is a classic!
Abba had a hit in the end of 1980 - Lay All Your Love On Me. It was their last hit.
I am sorry but this Song came in 1984. So this is an 80's Song and not a 90's.
@@carolincleve1630 one night in bangkock came out in 1985 USA, and the Robbie version came out in 1985.
Not sure if the Murray head version came out overseas in 1984.

Слушая "Шахматы", я сразу узнала фирменный стиль Аббы. Особенно "I know him so well". Прям как будто под Агнетту и Фриду писали.
Murray Head and ABBA in the same video? That is 80's coolness to an extreme!!!

Benny Andersson showing us once again that he is the greatest melody writer in pop music history.
Well, at least one of them. But he's got some stiff competition with Jeff Lynne, Burt Bacharach, Gamble & Huff, Mike Stoller, Bob Gaudio, certainly Barry Gibb, Quincy Jones, MJ, so many Motown writing teams, Carol King, and probably the entire Brill Building going way back to Cole Porter. How many have I left out ? ...

And Bjorn is once again the great lyricist of Benny’s songs.

Wow... What a rare performance... I never saw Abba and Murray together. I don't know why YT recommended this today, but I'm glad.
Every Thai person I've met detests this song, but I love it. 🙂
Then don't tell them I had to think off this song during my one and only night of 7 hours in Bangkok 🙂
Really, I was only switching planes but 7 hours is too long to be stuck in the airport so we nipped into the city and made the best of it. One night in Bangkok ...
That was not ABBA... or did you see Agneta?

@@JCesar-xf2bk No, that's just ABB.
If this song is any indication of what Abba would’ve sounded like in the 80’s (had they stayed together & made more albums), i’d say that all us fans really missed out on some great potential music.
I always imagine Agnetha and Frida's voices in the chorus.
Check out Gemini, Björn and Benny made songs for them. Ghost Town is a good one! Its the guy from Gemini who does the singing in One night in Bangkok, Anders Glenmark
Maybe they needed more original music. Without the cute girl with pink hair, no music.
@@australien192 Murray Head didn't write the song. The guys from ABBA did.
Do you see ABBA in this song at all? So sad.
I've always liked this song. There is just something about it. I never knew ABBA was involved in this and I do like ABBA. I guess now I know why I like it so much.
Two of them wrote on it but Anders Glenmark sang the choruses and harmonies.

Frida has such a presence that she steals the show while casually standing in a corner.
What a girl!
ABSOLUTELY!! Her charm, her magnetism is dazzling ✨💗❤️
Preciosa Frida
That's the truth!
Love her!
Frida started life as a Norwegian SS-brat -- Her father was one of the German occupiers and her Norwegian Mother was forced to procreate with him -- Frida ultimately moved to Sweden to escape the scorn that was unfairly assigned to her -- She did eventually meet her Father after she was both an adult and famous -- I was a devout Abba fan in the 1970's and Frida was my favorite member -- She voiced my favorite Abba song, which is titled "Gonna Sing You My Lovesong"
In 1984 ABBA in Minneapolis - full choir, full rock band and almost a full orchestra - I was apart of a group of teens from all over the state that sang the music from the score Chess with ABBA! Memorable time for me in High School - got autographs! Amazing songs! Wish I could have seen the musical.
All 4 were there?
Wow that’s better than my high school memories of our trip to Europe for a choir competition! So much performing and not enough advice on where to go and what to do for fun during free time. And not much free time. I didn’t speak German, and I was 16 so I was not going to run around Vienna (where we spent most of our time) by myself, not even in the daytime!
ABBA needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
They already are
@@lounolastname4477 AS THEY SHOULD
They are already since 2010.
They already are. Actually they are the first R&R inductees from a country where English is NOT an official or de facto language.
Hall of Fame is a load of nonsense anyway
Wow! I've loved this song as well as ABBA since I was a kid, I knew Murray Head was the lead I had NO IDEA they did the backing vocals!!! WOW!!!
They didn't. This is the studio version which everyone is just miming to. They are not on the original recording in any way. This is pretty lame honestly.
@@JMurdochNZ oh what a bummer, I was so happy. This is one of my favorite show tunes and ABBA is one of my favorite groups. Oh well, thanks for the info
They didn't. Two of them helped write it but Anders Glenmark sang the choruses and harmonies.
Must be cool to have 3 quarters of Abba as background singers.
Well, you could ask Norwegian artist Finn Kalvik about that. Internationally, he is known for the second "nill points" in the Eurovision Song Contest, even though his record at the time by far was an Abba-production. It is called "Kom ut, kom fram". Large parts of it was also done with English lyrics but not released. It is on YT somewhere. Finn has told he "escaped" from the ESC fiasco to Benny and Frida, where he had his own room .

There you go, the English version!😀
There is also the follow up album "Natt og dag" from 1981, pretty much same production as the previous album the year before.

There is also the follow up album "Natt og dag" from 1981, pretty much same production as the previous album the year before.

The fourth is Karin Glenmark from the group Gemini with her brother Ander. They recorded an album produced by Bjorn and Benny, singing the definitive version of Just like that, and Another you, another me, a song that is totally ABBA style, versioned a lot of years later by H & Claire from Steps, in their solo album after the group's dissolution.
This song never gets stale, it's that sublime mix of operatic and funk elements that creates something unique, interesting and profound in its short moral treatise
So there's a lot going on here for the uninitiated. This song is from a musical called "Chess" by Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus of A𐐒BA, with Tim Rice. The music was released as a concept album in 1984, and this song became a hit. The "American" who speaks most of the lyrics looks so familiar because he is Murray Head, brother of Anthony Stewart Head, also known as Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I don't think they look much alike, personally...
Had this song on 7" vinyl!!! Love Murray's delivery (and cool as f..k in that suit!!)
Murray Head also was the original Judas of Tim Rices and Andrew Lloyd Webbers concept album of Jesus Christ Superstar.
I'm have been obsessed with this song since I first heard it. No reason. Too many. I don't know.
Ian Anderson on the flute, perhaps?
me too, is something dark in the music, I dont know, its hard to understand
Yeah man. Me too.
Look up on Wikipedia it give you some hints, about what the lyrics it says and compare the city's night life with a chess game.
It hard to me to explain since English isn't my native language.
By the way TBBT got me in to looking for more info about the song and lyrics but even reading the lyrics I didn't get much until I went to Wikipedia, anyway have a great day.
Me too, i have to go to Bangkok and go to muay thai fight and then go to redlight district
FRIDA!!! So happy to see her there!
So it’s only 3 members of ABBA in this clip?
Love seeing Frida singing in the background

@@edg42 björn, frida and benny are literally in the choir
The first time I heard this song, I knew there was certain magic to it. This video proves it.
ABBA has always had that magic touch. Thanx for posting this timeless melody.
For some odd reason, I always think of this as a takeout from an aborted early-mid 80s ABBA album. I can so imagine Björn doing the chant/rap part, Frida and Agnetha singing the chorus. This would have been a massive ABBA hit.
The guys wrote the music for them
They were planning to release an album around 1982, but it was canceled and only Under Attack, The Day Before You Came and Cassandra were released. It is known that Just Like That was one of the songs recorded for that particular album.
@@renegadesoul8701'You Owe Me One' also came out too, but was just never given pride of place on any remaster for the first decade of them. Even 'I Am The City' sneaked out in 1993. 'Just Like That' can only be taken in the forms it turns up on TH-cam.
Tell yourself it IS a massive ABBA hit. I complete this "Opus 10" album with this & those other CHESS killers, making a 10 track album, yay, and all those songs fit really well into where ABBA were musically and lyrically at the time. Also both those Gemini ABBA albums are really ABBA albums sung by another duo who do them proud, if you delete the appalling 'Wild About That Girl' on the 2nd one and substitute CHESS's 'The Arbiter' for it. And then there's adding 'When I Close My Eyes' to the 1st Gemini one as they didn't!
I'm not sure I agree. The days had long gone that Bjorn would be front of house like that (except tin the odd, very obscure album track like 'Two For the Price of One'). But I can't see the girls doing the verses either.
You know there's gonna be fire if ABBA is in the choir
They're miming. I recognize the original track.
@@LogoMan7777 In TV presentation it's always miming. You couldn't get the sound similar to the recording if you would play it live, because you would get huge reverbs and hall effects. I would say this was made in the 2000s for Wetten Dass, when Thomas Gottschalk invited the whole cast of ABBA to his show.
Its the end of 2024, and we haven't had any good music in years. I remember hits coming out every week in the 80s and 90s.
"I get my kicks above the waistline, Sunshine," lolololol, some of my favorite lyrics of all time.

This was a great play! The rest of the soundtrack is beautiful. But "ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK" can't be topped! So glad you posted this! Not many people know about the play. THANKS!
Fabulously clever lyrics from Tim Rice and of course such a great tune. The whole of the musical is excellent.
Ah, Tim Rice lyrics!
Well, Tim didn't write this song alone.
Lyricist(s): Tim Rice and Björn Ulvaeus
Composer(s): Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus
Many don’t know that Whitney Houston and her mom Cissy covered a song from this show as a duet. It’s the last song on Whitney’s debut album.
@@RLucas3000 Yes - and they did a dreadful job compared to the original
@@tigershootit's like the difference between Brooks & Dunn and Asleep At The Wheel performing Boot Scootin' Boogie; as Ray Benson said: "This is what it's supposed to sound like."
You can taste ABBA how it would sound in the 80's through this song and some others like Roxette.
The reason why Frida sings in the background ( well she is mimicking in this case because her voice is not on the recording), is that she attended the same TV Show as Benny and Björn because she did promotion for her "Shine" album. She petformed "Come To Me". She also had a talk with the TV presenter and B&B joined her.
Many comments mention the 2 Gemini Albums which were written and produced by B&B.
But the last Pop Album which both of them wrote and produced was "Shapes" by Josefin Nilsson. Its a great album!
I love the way frida looks as always so fresh
Frida's secret for looking fabolous is her lebensborn creme...
Amazes me that still to this day there are recording out there that I've never seen or heard. I've known the song "One Night" ever since the musical Chess came out but NEVER knew there was a recording of ABB_ singing along to it. Can't wait to hear there 2 new songs this December.
All the songs from the musical Chess were composed by Björn and Benny from ABBA. Tim Rice wrote the lyrics with some lyrics by Björn. However, ABB_ didn’t sing any backing vocals. They were lip syncing here just for promotion.
ABBA is NOT singing along. murray is lip syncing to the album cut and so are they. the background voices are the original singers.

Memorable time for me in High School - got autographs! Amazing songs! Wish I could have seen the musical. Could have been 1985...
The fact Frida is here in the video's end alongside B&B miming for a few shots (Karin standing in for Agnetha, though Agnetha did actually demo an early version of 'Heaven Help My Heart' (named 'Every Good Man' instead) 2 years before) just confirms for me this IS meant to be an ABBA song. And 4 songs I can complete the 1982 album "Opus 10" with. If only I'd known yonks ago!
Opus 10 was a working title that was started up by a journalist not ABBA, """ June 1981 a journalist from Swedish newspaper Expressen visited and interviewed ABBA in the studio, while they were recording what would become The Visitors album, released in November 1981.
The subsequent published story was titled "Now ABBA Are Recording Their Tenth Album". In the article, he wrote "will Opus 10 now beat them all?", simply using the classical term "opus" to refer to what he calculated was ABBA's tenth album, counting the previous seven studio albums, plus two Greatest Hits volumes (released 1975 and 1979), but disregarding the Spanish language Gracias Por La Música (1980).
Rumours spread through ABBA fan circles that Opus 10 was the working title for The Visitors album, and an instrumental demo recording, actually titled Nationalsång (and later to become Anthem in the Andersson/Rice/Ulvaeus musical Chess[1984]), recorded during The Visitors sessions and subsequently leaked on bootleg cassettes, was rumoured to be the title track.
Years later the rumour morphed into Opus 10 being the title of ABBA's provisional follow up to The Visitors, for which six tracks were recorded in 1982 before ABBA abandoned the album, released the compilation The Singles - The First Ten Years, the singles The Day Before You Came and Under Attack, then took what they said was "a break" which became permanent.
The rumour became so widespread that it was included in many ABBA books, even in Agnetha's authorised bio As I Am.
@@kiwi-to-a-tee Wow, how did you find this out?! Mind you, I'd not be at all surprised if ABBA were to do it, they've always been absurdly lazy and uncreative when it comes to naming the parent album (always after a song on it) or even worse, calling it "ABBA: ABBA" (yeah, we know your names, guys, it's there already!) or an album "The Album" (yeah, we know what it is guys, we're not stupid, it's got songs on it and it plays in a player!). With "Voyage", they actually broke the norm. Already, I notice a mistake, they had 8 albums recorded before the count-up (you're forgetting "Ring Ring", it doesn't matter most places didn't get it till a 1990s re-release following the ABBA wake-up job with "ABBA: Gold" compilation, it's STILL a proper album, and it STILL counts. In fact, the compilations shouldn't be counted at all, but if you include all the 70s non-album tracks ABBA made (and TH-cam had to help with this as half a dozen never released properly)and slot it in chronologically as the last 70s album, THIS becomes the 7th, which indeed leads us to "Opus 10",a rather better name for an album that at least isn't to be named after a song. In fact he should have donated it to them, it'd be better than what they'd come up with for it!
To answer his question though: "will 'Opus 10' beat them all', the answer is surely YES! Those 6 songs were killers, and admittedly the only way I could complete the album was to add those 4 CHESS songs from it, which works really well, not least as all, especially 'Nobody's Side' has their relationships-at-war/truths about love has their stamp all over it, and could so imagine Frida singing it, while 'Heaven Help My Heart' was recorded by Agnetha oddly, of course under another title and it was just a demo, not the finished product which is much better written. Adding the final massive duet from CHESS and 'One Night In Bangkok' in the belief Bjorn singing it, which isn't actually any odder a fit on an ABBA album than the likes of 'Two For The Price Of One' and 'Man In The Middle' ever were. Those songs were there for the taking and damned if I'm gonna leave them on a theatre soundtrack when I can complete this album with them-and they clearly are the best fit. Incidentally the two Gemini albums that followed (1985/1987) I count as ABBA product too, just sung by different people, but in their style and most of those songs are B&B productions and simply represent the next step where ABBA would have gone. If ever a group bowed at the top when they really shouldn't have it was ABBA!!
@@kyachdistent1301 the information is clearly on the internet regarding opus 10 not being a title as well as Bjorn in a video interview during the voyage period with benny agreeing said there was no working title for the follow up to "The Visitors" they hadn't got to that point as all the songs hadn't been written when they canned the project nor was it to be called opus 10 and they laughed at such a idea.as for being lazy for album titles, you will find 100% of artists/groups naming their albums after a song from that album and using their name as a title.."The Album" title was used to coincide with "The Movie" title at the time of release.. a powerful way to suggest that the work are somehow one and the same, and connected. Just like the album "Voyage" is also connected to the "Voyage Show" with only 2 songs written for that show. They are connected.
I had no idea ABBA was involved in this song , in all them years -- great track , always loved this

This song was a hit and enjoyed a lot of radio play. I didn’t even know it was from a musical until many years later.

"One Night in Bangkok" is a song from the concept album and subsequent musical Chess by Tim Rice, Benny Andersson, and Björn Ulvaeus. English actor and singer Murray Head raps the verses, while the chorus is sung by Anders Glenmark, a Swedish singer, songwriter, and producer. - Wikipedia
It's playback, not live audio but that is Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid from ABBA. The fourth person "singing" the chorus is Karin Glenmark, sister of Anders Glenmark sho is singing the actual chorus. Karin and Anders was pop duo in the 80s, they had a band called Gemini.
1984 would have put this before the stage play Chess actually opened in London, so this is a performance of the "concept" album that came out first. The original "concept" album, the Chessmaster was Murray Head. I notice Benny, Bjorn and Frida are there, but not Agnetha.

This lip-synched performance was filmed and broadcast on Wednesday 28 November 1984 for the German music TV show "Na, sowas! Extra" in Augsberg, and Karin Glenmark provides (lip-synched) backing vocals here along with Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid.
This uses abba musicians so to me is pretty much abba and how they may have sounded in 1980s
I would love to see, if it's possible, the entire show. There some many songs of this musical that I like and if also there is Frida (as Benny and Björn) is AMAZING. 🙏🏻✨Do you have more??
