I am an international medical student aspiring to do internship in SA. However, the application process seems very complex. First the foreign workforce portal and then icsp. Could you please mention the easier steps I should take and how many months prior should I start the application? And also if I manage to get accepted, how will i go about residency permit? Hey Simphiwe haha these definitely need a lot of unpacking! This is obviously based on my experience and where I'm currently working. So the studying and reading you do is rotation dependant, I found that I read up a lot more during surgery compared to internal medicine where there's just no time, lots of work. The reading is on the go as you see patients mostly, much less that final year. Our profession is taxing in many ways and as you know we all deal with it differently. I have had some unpleasantries with seniors at work, more in terms of making interns do tedious work, bullying, and victimisation when you speak up. Presenting topics is also rotation dependant. Internal has had no presentations at all, whereas in surgery we each had to prepare at least one topic for our morning meetings. Questions are asked a lot in most consultant rounds, not so much the MOs. Those rounds happens maybe twice a week and everyone is expected to parttake. Hope this hels. Let me know if you have more!
