      @maureengibbons9472 your absolutely most welcome. Every time I an in Greymouth I try to make a video sounds like they are getting a new library built down by the river I'll have to check that build out. I'll have a more recent video from Greymouth uploaded this week. Plenty of videos of Hokitika and the Fox Glacier region to come

    Every Labour weekend they run a Motorcycle street race through the centre of the shopping district, MacKay st running west to east is the start finish straight, well worth going to Greymouth just for that

    Most of the town just seems so grey, featureless, dull and industrial. Nice broad streets but very empty. Hardly any traffic or people. It all gives a somewhat chilling effect. Perhaps I've got it wrong. People who know this place might view it differently. Would be interested to see what they say. I've never been to NZ, by the way.

    • @steveruss8369
      @steveruss8369  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Ahh Greymouth was an industrial town built around the railways and Port for shipping export coal from the local mines right upto the 1980s today the town is looking a bit more vibrant than its former self. We don't have a very big population on the South Island compared to other countries our city's would be like a small town compared to places like Europe and Northern America

      Coming to the West Coast of New Zealand, then visit Reefton, an 1870 gold mining town full of character. It's the true Westcoast of the past.
      Fabulous old colonial buildings and not dull and grey.

      @davehawes8177 absolutely agree!! Reefton has come along way with time good investment into the town and it's heritage buildings that have been magnificently restored. Love Reefton such a vibrant town.

      😂😂😂😂 i imagine this video was shot on a Sunday. Weekdays are much busier as a rule, but it is a quiet town. You have to realise that the population of West Coast, which stretches over 500 kms, is only 33,000.

    Is that back packers bldg the old Brickhouse hotel? It looks like the hotel I stayed in back in the day when working on the Anchor shipping Company "MV Mamaku". It was winter time and the Grey Doctor nearly froze me solid.

    • @steveruss8369
      @steveruss8369  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not sure where the backpackers was there was one down by the port the former Gilmore hotel and another hostel up Chapple Street not sure if there was one inthe CBD are of Greymouth. Yeep Greymouth will freeze you especially with the mist and Barber blowing down the Grey.

    • @blocka58
      @blocka58 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The Gilmore was locally known as the Brick house as I recall. We stayed in that one because it was closest to the coal loading wharf where the MV Mamaku tied up. Of course this is going back many years.

    This song springs to mind by The Specials.
    This town (town) is coming like a ghost town
    All the clubs have been closed down
    This place (town) is coming like a ghost town
    Bands won't play no more
    Too much fighting on the dance floor
    Do you remember the good old days before the ghost town?
    We danced and sang, and the music played in a de boomtown
    This town (town) is coming like a ghost town
    Why must the youth fight against themselves?
    Government leaving the youth on the shelf
    This place (town) is coming like a ghost town
    No job to be found in this country
    Can't go on no more
    The people getting angry
    This town is coming like a ghost town

      The vid was filmed after the town was closed and most of the people were probably having their dinner at home
      But yess the town of Greymouth is a little bit lifeless and a haunt but it's good for cycling as I won't get run over or run into people haha.
      Thanks for the view and song I absolutely appreciate it.

      @@steveruss8369 ''...after the town was closed''...!?!? How can they close a town, especially one that's the biggest on the west coast of South Island? I'm sure you have an answer, but your statement made the place seem even more weirdly desolate than it appeared in the vid.
