@@Kemet3.0 I don't know, I guess everyone has their own opinion. I think this version is way better than the stylistics. The way Londee Lauren comes in, and then how they broke it down at the end. This version beats the stylistics by far!!
Absolutely stunning version. Why are there not more R&B groups mixing male and female voices? Seems a natural. There’s the New Birth; the Fifth Dimension; the Friends of Distinction; Hues Corporation; Faith, Hope & Charity; Ecstasy, Passion & Pain; and … well, please name some more! People seem to think the Stylistics version is the gold standard of this song, but I lean toward Angela Bofill’s. But after hearing this, I’m not so sure. This is not a competition anyway. I would love to have an album of all the different versions of this fantastic song.
Today is my fathers Bday. Hes been passed away 10 years now. This was in his collection. I came here just to vibe and think about the old man. RIP Pops. One of a kind guy with great taste in music
Damn I haven't heard this song in years I was young as hell when this came out in the 70's and the shit still sounds good as hell.....Go New Birth this song was the shit....Stop Look Listen Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy..../
The State Theater in Harrisburg in 1973 or 74. I was so young my mom took us and picked us up. Charlie Hearndon walked out on stage first and lit it up
I love this version. I was blessed to see them twice when attended University of Maryland in the 70's. This kind of music is gone. However, Bruno Mars and Silk Sonic and Anthony Hamilton have that old spin. But, New Birth was the group.
I'm very happy to have found the original album within my father's collection. It pays to never throw away your loved ones music because you never know what Jewels exist within the collection.
There was/is nobody like The New Birth. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to see them perform "live" when they had their full crew back in the day. Their shows were phenomenal! Their musicianship, vocals, arrangements, wardrobe, and choreography was excellent! No one could touch them. I pity any band/group that had to follow them. You would pray they were closing the show instead of opening, because they would wreck the joint! If you weren't there back in the day, that's the best I can do with describing how awesome they were. You really had to be there. I wish we had video as prevalent back then as it is today. Then you would really know what I'm talking about. The "Soul Train" video performances are okay, but they're pantomiming, not playing live. Their "live" performance on "SOUL" was great. But their "live" performances during, and after the release of the"It's Been A Long Time" LP were supercalifragilistic! As you can hear on this Thom Bell/Linda Creed composition, New Birth would take someone's song, and make it their own. Yes, the Stylistics did a fabulous job on this jam. But New Birth took it to another dimension. That's what they would do ALL of the time. Listen to Skylark's "Wild Flower," you would never know anyone else recorded it. They took total possession of that song. Leslie Wilson's incredible lead vocals, begging, pleading, rapping are amazing. Londie's soprano, Melvin's falsetto, the harmonies with Alan Frey, and the entire arrangement of "Wild Flower" is flawless... I could really write a book about the New Birth, because my band covered a lot of their tunes, and we studied them to the max! We were late to our gig in York, PA because we had to see the New Birth perform at the York Fairgrounds. The fine we received for being late to our gig was worth it (even though we told our manager and booking agent NOT to book us on that date, they did it any way)! However, there was no way we were going to pass up seeing New Birth live. No way! I love every member of that group! Robin Russell, Alan Frey, Londie Loren (Wiggins), Charlie Hearndon, Austin Lander, Robert "Lurch" Jackson, Tony Churchill, Leslie and Melvin Wilson, Carl McDaniel, and a special tribute to the incomparable James Baker, and Leroy Taylor who have gone on to glory. There was no one on earth like these folks. You got more than your money's worth at a New Birth concert, and you got love! The Mighty Nite Liters and The New Birth forever, baby!
I remember seeing them on soul like it was yesterday, they covered bill whithers grand ma's hand i was blown away that had to be back in 74 or 75 im 65 so you know that was a long timea go
Yes I feel you I caught them back in the day in DC Carter Baron they would crush the Warner theater in DC must have seen them at least five times back in the day. Your absolutely right they were phenomenal
Music like this kept your koolness tight you stood up right can you dig it. Girls was for the macking and they digging most guys conversation where he was coming from. Thanks for your contribution to society New Birth your music will always be love. Perteet family
The first time I heard this song, I was in high school and it was the Stylistics' version, and I fell in love with it then, and I still love their version to this day, but this version actually sends chills through me. So I have to agree with you, and admit that this is the best version of this song, and hands down the Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross' version is the worst!!! And I think Phyllis Hyman did it also, and her version was OK, but this version is the bomb!!!
Damn straight it was better. This is one of the best songs of the 70's--actually, it is one of the best songs ever. Actually, some of the best times of my life took place with this song in the background. I should try to bring those times back, by playing this song again.

They did a great job, but not better. Not even close.

I hate to say it but this is the best version. It's better than my Stylistics and Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross version. And that's saying alot.

Yougotthatright!
I agree 😃
What gives it its edge is the slower tempo and instrumentation. Saw them perform it live back in the day! Even better!
I think its Londee that puts this version over the top. Oh, and that damn band aint exactly chopped liver.
