  • This ham's use of the RTL-SDR dongle, tapping the 68.5 MHz IF of my Yaesu FT-920 transceiver, getting panoramic frequency display and frequency control from the computer.
This should work with any transceiver having a first IF above 25 MHz without the need of up-converters.
The dongle with a metal enclosure was bought for $20 including postage, on Ebay.
There is USB-RS-232 cable between the computer and radio for computer control of the radio (which is useful with other programs for digital modes).
Software used: HDSDR (the screen seen here) and Omni-Rig running in the background so the computer talks to the radio.
    The dongle I bought:

    UPDATE-SEPTEMBER 2020....
This afore-mentioned dongel has dies after 2 years. I bought a new one from Banggood for about $20 which was of poor quality and noisy... useless.
Next I bought one from the RTL-STR.COM website... this one is of good quality, and works well as it should...Carl Laufer who runs the site gives user support and answers Emails. Dongels from other sources may be cheap imitations... so I advise don't waste your money on others sources.
The dongel gets quite hot, as did the previous one. I suspect that the previous one was damaged by the heat... Although Carl advises me that getting hot is normal, I attached a heat sink from the CPU of a scrapped computer to it which dissipates the heat beautifully.

Hi Ron, just started looking at your setup and the dongle is available from Amazon now. I have FT920 and want to use a waterfall screen with it so will give this a go. Thanks Dave G6JFL

enjoy dave! my rtl sdr dongle gave up the ghost (I think my second or third one), but it was sure good while it lasted. I finally succumbed and bought a fancy new Yaesu with SDR and all the gizmos.

This is a great video, shows me what I was looking for. When you mentioned noisy SDR I was wondering how that showed up. I have fixed peaks across the waterfall and I suspect that’s what you were speaking of. By any chance do you have the HDSDR config file you used? I know you’ve got yourself a shiny new Yaesu but thought I’d ask. My HDSDR seems to not behave as your does and the dragging the frequency bar would be very handy. I bought the PAT70. It was a very high noise level, so you could only hear s9=10db sigs, something like that.
The last SDR dongle lasted half a year, but then also gave up the ghost. A lot of trouble to get everything going for me, no way of knowing how good the dongle... some say SDR PLAY which cost $100 is a good one. Some much time and tinkering around to get this going, that I finally opted out for a modern SDR radio which I luckily could afford. Good luck.

@@soulrongang Thanks. I’ve tried sdr play 1 and Nooelec v2, same. I’m thinking this isn’t the solution I was looking for either. The kit performs as advertised but the end result isn’t that slick.

Hello! Nice video. Would you please explain what happens when you transmit since the SDR will be in RX mode all the time. 73 de PY5CL

Your see your transmission on the screen, and the other spectrum activity vanishes until the XCVR goes back to rcv 73 es GL

    Hi,
Really interesting, I just aquired an FT920, would like to set up a sdr for a visual, could you let me know where the IF pick up point is in the radio?

Hello there!! I have an FT920, when I use it with CAT cable, I connect it with a serial to usb converter, but when opening the program (anyone using CAT) I hear an audio noise exactly when the CAT indicator lights up, making it annoying to listen that noise, do you know what could be happening? I put ferrites in the converter and in the audio cable and still that annoying noise continues to be heard. I also used another serial to usb cable thinking that the converter chip was poor quality, but it results in the same annoying noise, everything else works fine.

Since posting this, I had problems with different dongles and software configuration. It was fun while it lasted for me, After 18 years with this great radio I bought a new one with all the modern features. Good luck to you.
