  • In tonight's top story: The wildfire raging in Jasper National Park has exploded in size, damaging up to half of the structures in the townsite. Heather Yourex-West looks at the devastating losses and how the fire remains a threat despite the rain.
With a massive wildfire burning through Jasper National Park, firefighters from around the world and the Canadian Armed Forces are on their way to try to save as much of the park and townsite as possible. Neetu Garcha looks at what emergency crews on the frontline are facing.
The arrival of cooler weather in B.C. is giving fire crews a brief opportunity to hit wildfires hard. But Alissa Thibault reports, more windy days are in the forecast and the danger is far from over.
As the Canadian Olympic women's soccer team revels in defeating New Zealand in its opening match, Bev Priestman has been removed as head coach after assistant coach Jasmine Mander and Canada Soccer analyst Joseph Lombardi were sent home. Mander and Lombardi were caught using drones to spy on New Zealand's team during training. As Crystal Goomansingh reports, the spying scandal has done little to quell the enthusiasm of some Canadians for the Paris Olympics.
As Israel faces intense pressure to end its war on Hamas in Gaza, U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris both met separately with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington. Bianca Facchinei looks at whether any meaningful progress was made towards ending the violent conflict.
Canada's largest grocer is set to fork out a lot of dough. Anne Gaviola explains how Loblaws will settle class-action lawsuits over a bread price-fixing scheme.
Plus, Jasper National Park is one of the most gorgeous, protected pieces of wilderness in the world, attracting about 2.5 million visitors every year. But there are now fears for the community's future as a devastating wildfire threatens it. Eric Sorensen looks at what makes Jasper so exceptional and the hope that its beauty can be rebuilt once the smoke clears.

The UCP eliminated the province’s elite aerial attack wildfire fighting program - which stationed 63 firefighters in key areas who were trained and prepared to rappel from helicopters into wildfires to facilitate more efficient firefighting. Bases included Edson, Fox Creek, and Lac La Biche - areas dealing with out-of-control fires this year. In that same budget, the government closed 15 wildfire lookouts meant to provide early detection of fires.” Daniel Smith's government has cut millions from firefighting budgets. How dare she stand there with crocodile tears. This devastation is her fault.

However, as other critics have already noted, in 2019 the United Conservative Party cut Alberta’s wildfire staffing budget and scrapped its $1.4 million Aerial Rapattack fire service team. That same budget looked to cut staff at between 15 to 30 of the province’s 127 wildfire lookout towers.
In 2018-2019, according to government estimates, Alberta’s “wildfire management,” budget was $130 million. In the 2019-2020 budget, the UCP itself boasted to the Edmonton Journal, Alberta’s wildfire management budget was $117.6 million.
And by 2022-2023, the province’s budget estimates reduced its “wildfire management” to $100.5 million. It is projected to fall again to $100.4 million in 2023-2024.

In fact, the sources reviewed do not indicate any specific cuts to the firefighter budget under her administration. @@fardinrahmanshamil9267besides the first sentence their whole comment was just toxic positivity. This situation is horrific, it’s not good for the area nor the planet especially when you look at the bigger picture and see how many tens of thousands of forest acres are blazing compared to all years prior (hint: It’s getting rapidly worse). There’s a lot that’s been lost that will never be back, notably lives.
Vegetation is struggling due to the climate crisis, not just animals. These forests won’t simply spring back up to their original health in a decade. There isn’t a solution anymore, that ship sailed a long time ago, we just have to live (or die more like) with the consequences of industrialisation.

Seems pretty suspicious that Jasper goes up in flames the first summer after the TMEP pipeline was completed. It's suspicious because for over a decade the pine beetle decimated hundreds of thousands if not millions of hectares of pine trees in the park causing them to die and dry out all around Jasper and the park. For the last three of those 10 plus years, there was a huge pipeline project being built in and around Jasper that involved lots of high-risk ignition sources like welding, cutting, heavy equipment, smoking outside designated areas etc and there were hot summers all through that region during construction as well. But yet, there wasn't any mentioning of forest fires that posed a threat to Jasper during that time and/or before. Then all of a sudden, two forest fires start on the opposing sides of the town and take half it out. Something doesn't feel quite right here. Pretty easy to tell if it was lightning or not. I hope Danielle Smith looks hard into this one ... As Alberta has in the recent past, caught people deliberately lighting these fires! From time-to-time people make mistakes which can lead to fires and that's bad enough. However, when individuals or groups deliberately cause trouble that put people, communities and resources in harm's way and do so out of profit, power and or from some wacked out belief, then they need to be delt with harshly!

    • @darlene2709
      @darlene2709 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

FACT FOCUS: Conspiracies misconstrue ‘15-minute city’ idea. Cities where people can live a short walk from work, school and other daily essentials rather than braving traffic-clogged highways or long commutes: utopian ideal or dystopian nightmare? In 2023, apparently, it depends on who you ask.
Some conservative commentators and conspiracy theorists are increasingly convinced the concept of a “15-minute city” - an urban design principle recently embraced by cities ranging from Paris, France to Cleveland, Ohio - is the latest nefarious plot to curtail individual freedoms.
"You won’t be able to use your own car on certain roads and highways without the government’s permission and consent,” claimed one Instagram user in a recent video that’s been liked more than 5,400 times. “You will be constantly monitored by surveillance cameras to ensure that you don’t leave your designated residential zone without first being authorized to do so.”
But urban experts and city officials stress the idea has nothing to do with regulating people’s movements or taking away other freedoms. In some cases, they say, it’s being wrongly conflated with local plans to mitigate traffic-clogged roads.
The 15-minute neighborhoods proposal, meanwhile, aims to ensure that “every resident has all the essentials (shops, healthcare, parks) within a 15-minute walk of their home,” the fact sheet says. The goal is to “support and add services, not restrict them.”
Conspiracy theorists are tapping into COVID-19 pandemic-era vitriol against lockdowns when they falsely portray the concept as a “climate lockdown,” notes Carlo Ratti, director of the Senseable City Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The goal of the 15-minute city is to provide convenient and equitable access to necessities like healthcare, schools, grocery stores, jobs, and greenspace,” Zickefoose wrote in an email. “Our transportation system and neighborhood configurations currently provide this access to residents with cars, which leaves out almost a quarter of our residents.” AP News

It's not like flipping a switch. It will take time for our effort to reverse the effects of climate change. The government doesn't keep the money from the carbon tax. The money is collected and returned as a rebate. The carbon tax rewards those who use less energy. For example, the mass transit user pays less carbon tax and the guy who drives a big truck pays more. Both get the same rebate. That seems both fair and reasonable.

"It is not unusual for some trees to remain standing in the aftermath of a fire while surrounding buildings and vehicles burn, fire dynamics and environmental experts told Reuters.
Some posts on social media in the wake of the fires on the Hawaiian island of Maui, however, suggested that the fact some trees had remained standing showed proof that the fires were somehow engineered or steered to intentionally burn homes and vehicles, leaving trees unscathed.
The fact that some trees could remain standing or were less damaged than cars or buildings during a fire is not abnormal. This depends on a variety of factors, fire dynamics and ecology experts told Reuters, ranging from water content on the surface and within a tree itself to the way the fire propagates through an area.
Albert Simeoni, Head of the Fire Protection Engineering Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, said that it’s “very typical” to have vegetation “unburned inside large communities.”
“It is not uncommon to see burned down homes and cars while also seeing trees and utility poles virtually undamaged,” said Erica Fischer, Assistant Professor at the Department of Wood Science and Engineering at Oregon State University. “We have seen this after many other fires and it is documented within federal reports, such as the 2008 Grass Valley Fire."
