That's one of the objectively worst ways to butt join two wires. The best way is a wire splice. The second best is a poured socket, then a couple of swaged collars (eg Talurit) then a pair of high quality (asymmetric) cable clamps, then two common cable clamps. Then come a whole variety of halfassed, "shade tree", poorly conceived and amateurishly faired botches like this one.
You could also just pick up a cable clamp from the hardware and do it.

It's the worst way to connect cable. Just take 5% copper welding rod and mapp gas then weld it together. Thats way save you money and time...
