It's fascinating how people misunderstand Buddhism. This video does a great job explaining why it's more of a spiritual philosophy than a 'religion' in the traditional sense.
At least Buddha was not a con man. Religion was created when the first con man met the first fool. We have created all religions. It's true for the commoners, useful for the politicians and false for the wise. Let's live a secular life. Get rid of all religious falsehoods.
There is great wisdom in avoiding the topics of God, self vs no self, and free will as a spiritual teacher. Too many people vehemently attached to their beliefs on these topics and not interested at all in considering alternatives. They are so rarely productive areas of discussion. Buddha was mainly interested in relieving suffering, not in nailing down every complex metaphysical concept. If one's compass is set on truth, those things will be worked out over time one way or another.
It is necessary for us to have correct understanding before practicing Buddhism ; otherwise, all the time spent in cultivation will be futile, as the most superior result will not be attained. Therefore, I would like to briefly explain the true nature of Buddhism. Chinese history tells us that about three thousand years ago, Buddha Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism was born in Northern India. He lived seventy nine years and dedicated forty-nine of them to teaching. In 67 AD, one thousand years after he entered Parinivarna, these teachings were formally introduced into China. Buddha is a Sanskrit word, meaning "wisdom and enlightenment". In essence, Buddha means wisdom. In application or function, it means enlightenment. The Buddha told us that perfect wisdom and virtue are innate to all sentient beings. The sutras , recorded teachings of the Buddha , tell us that "all sentient beings can attain Buddhahood" and every being possesses the wisdom and virtuous character of the Buddha ". In other words, all beings are equal to Buddhas in nature. Buddhism is a most virtuous and perfect education directed by the Buddha towards all sentient beings in the universe. In regards to time, it encompasses the past, present and future. In regards to space, it encompasses everything from our daily lives to the infinite universe. Buddhism is an education of wisdom and understanding of life and the universe. It is not a religion. How can we tell that Buddhism is an education? Today，the terms teacher and student are only used in school. However, we call Buddha Shakyamuni, our original Teacher. We call ourselves students. This is unlike religions in which the god and his/her disciples do not have a teacher-student relationship, but rather a parent-child relationship. In Buddhism, however, it is clearly stated that the Buddha is the teacher, and we are the students. Bodhisattvas and we are classmates ; they are the Buddha's former students while we are his current ones. What is the ultimate goal of the Buddha's Teachings? It is to attain the Perfect, Complete Enlightenment. Transliterated from Sanskrit, it is called Annuttara Samyak-Sambodhi. Therefore it's a question of definition if Buddhism is a religion or not. In the end it's a philosphical debate whether or not it is a religion. For the path itself, it doesn't matter. In other words, this debate is a waste of time. All that matters is, if the teachings work or not. For this practitioner, student, illusory appearing self, they work very well. I'm very grateful that the teacher, the teaching and the fellow practicioners appear within my mindstream. Thanks so much all of you "out there", even the ones who create problems for me. Buddha in his knowing cowardly walks away from explaining his direct experience off enlightenment. Instead he says clinging to views is the nature of suffering, excusing himself from direct explanation of his experience, what was he afraid off.
The Buddha wasn’t afraid-he taught in a way that helped people awaken. He emphasized direct experience over fixed views because clinging to ideas can create confusion. His goal was to guide others to realization, not just give descriptions 🙏🙏
