Meghalaya police beefed up security outside the Shillong Press Club on Thursday hours before the press conference by Brahmachari Mukundanand a representative of Swami Avimukteshwaranand, the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath who plans to campaign in the northeast against cow slaughter.
Security was beefed up as members of the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) gathered outside the press club to protest against the group who were scheduled to hold a press conference on the ‘Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra’.
The campaign eyes on promoting a nationwide ban on cow slaughter and is scheduled to begin from Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh on September 22. The group will hold the campaign to declare “Cow as Mother of the Nation” in Shillong on October 2.
Speaking to the media HYC president, Roy Kupar Synrem said that the organisation intended to question the objective of the group despite being aware that the majority of the state’s population consume beef. The HYC leader also urged the state government not to grant permission to hold the rally as it would create disharmony among the various communities and religions.
The press conference, meanwhile got cancelled at the eleventh hour after the representatives of Swami Avimukteshwaranand failed to reach the location. The Shillong Press Club in a statement expressed concern over the incident and said that the Club is an independent and neutral entity where every individual and group, irrespective of race, caste, creed, community, culture, and religion is welcome to hold a press conference on any issue(s). It also clarified that the proposed press conference was cancelled by the clients (Brahmachari Mukundanand) at the eleventh hour, not the Shillong Press Club.
The campaign by Swami Avimukteshwaranand will take place from September 22 to October 26 wherein he will visit the capitals of all Indian states and Union Territories (UTs).
Earlier, the Nagaland government announced that it would not permit the campaign citing objections from civil society organisations, political parties and the general public.
