Yep,that's true.Always "behind the beat" Most drummers usually are"on top of the beat. He keeps tempo with hi-hats,and his timing is perfect. This is the way many really good drummers used to keep time in the past,and very rare these days.
That fkn bass, man. The whole 2nd album was about John Paul Jones, folks. Sure, there was more than him going on but only he was punching way above any class on it. The sound he got on this track is stellar, his work on Ramble On, c'mon, nothing before or after anywhere in the universe touches what he did on LZII.
The GOAT of rock bass, IMHO. He just adds such a great sound and so many subtle and funky nuances. I think the big difference between Zep and all other great hard rock bands is that they were all so funky! Lots of love for James Brown and Motown. Aerosmith in the 70s had that going for them also.

Hi guys. This is my kind of crowd here! I left a comment out on the main about about Jones’ approach on this track. He and Bonzo had great copy cat ears. Someone would come up with a riff and the others would follow suit on it. In this case it was Jimmy who provided the main riff. It doesn’t hurt at all…having an accomplished, choirmaster-level organist (let alone polished session bassist) in your band. That said, Jones had great ears to copy this riff much the way Jimmy played it, with its open-ringing octave E and D notes. Zeppelin II as a whole is a record I’ve always referred to as: British Motown. Jones’ bass permeates this record deeply. From the Hammond B-3 organ playing on Thank You to the bass romp on Lemon Song. It’s all unique and untouchable playing. They really were “the ultimate unit.”
There's his isolated bass on Stairway as part of a similar video somewhere on YT. Was absolutely blown away by the fills/adlibs underneath and post-solo that I'd never heard in the final mix. Just astonishing playing

Page was given complete control over music production. One of his techniques for recording was to really push the levels on tape,called ,"over saturation"which causes a very nice distortion and compression, that can only be done on magnetic tape.The downside to this is that the highly magnetized "tracks" Will "bleed"into the layers of tape below,thus causing a distant echo to be heard,as in this song. They broke a lot of rules for sure that were a"no no!"in the business,and created a whole new sound. Just for the record the different algorithms used today,Saturation,various ambience algorithms,etc can not and never will create this type of "sound". If magnetic tape is recorded "hot" and then transferred quickly to digital the bleed through doesn't happen,as this takes some time. Over saturated tape,blues, rock go hand in hand together,as does natural ambiance.
Page really is one of the greatest rhythm guitar players of all time. You can argue about his lead work relative to Clapton and Beck, but he’s a way better rhythm player than both of them. I like his rock lead playing better also, particularly in his prime. I just listened to Cream Live and Clapton’s tone is wonderful, but all of his licks sound like his Crossroads solo. I almost think if you listen to Crossroads, White Room and Sunshine of Your Love you’ve heard all of Clapton in his Rock phase. Page is just so much more varied and creative.

For me Iommi is the best, perhaps not so much in being a step ahead and being superior to all the other greats but his influence, his influence is simply unmatched. I was actually reading an interview weeks ago where Jonesy was asked about Robert's guide vocal during the "way down inside" bit being left in because it just sounded cool. Hearing it now for the first time.
There's a set of CD's that has a ton of rehearsals, out takes, isolated tracks, and original demo versions including this one to where he sings ''you need love'' instead of ''whole lotta love'', that used to be posted on youtube but now I can't find them anymore. If you like this, you'll love those. This doesn't scratch the surface compared to those recordings.
Even Jones’ playing during the ambient part was interesting. You can’t hear it in the final mix but even if you could it would only add to the song. Also, there are some overtones that he consistently hits during the verse sections if you listen closely
Check out how Jones would pluck (on the upstroke) open D as he’s fretting the D 5 on A. (I believe Jimmy does the same on guit) He’d do the same on the E part, hit open E while fretting A 7. This thickens up the the whole sound of the riff. At around the 8:20 mark you hear him doing muted triplet gallops. I always wondered what this noise was for years, until this tape leaked out. He was a fine picker! God, Robert’s voice is something from another planet, really. These isolated tracks are very revealing, to say the least.
Especially in rock music, we expect bass and drums to be complimenting each other. What makes this track and countless Led Zeppelin tracks so hard hitting is how perfectly Bonham plays with along the riffs Jimmy is lays down. JPJ is always laying it down but the groove created between the drums and guitar drives this song
Bonzo the beast was a definite natural at the drums. he could play any type of percussion. I saw him live once, the guy was just amazing. he practically blew my mind away. I also like how he grunted like a bear when he played. he was such an influence to many drummers. RIP buddy!

May have been a spot where they punched in the vocal at that spot and missed covering the previous take by a split second. You had to punch in manually off the console in those days. And being it was so short it wasn't worth trying to get rid of it. Today in software you can just highlight it and hit delete. Tape, not so easy.
Why does the slide guitar sound so much quieter on the isolated track than on the finished mix? I can barely hear it whereas it seems quite prominent on the finished version.
It is strange that vocals doesn't have reverb in most of the song ..but drums have also in bass drum..this seems to work as a back and give to vocals space

But there is "What is and what should never be, Ramble on and Heartbreaker" on it. Funny, on the second chorus the voice compressor attack time is a bit to late.

Hard to describe the tone of the main guitar : not sure what amp he used for the orig. recording, I've read it was a Supra, but I really don't know. Whatever it REALLY was , I think it had more to do with the overall "tone" than the guitar. Just a THICK, bold tone - very bass-y , but enough treble to balance......?? That's what I hear, anyways.

I might be wrong, but I think a lot of that is Bonham sometimes playing a ghost note on the snare right after the backbeat.

Sounds like Page is catching a fret harmonic on the riff’s D note between the E maj chords throughout the song. Never noticed it before.
Play fretted D and open D together and slightly bend fretted D away from open D. You'll prob catch the odd harmonic as you go
