The music at the end just perfectly captures the feeling of a soul being protected and elevated from the harshness and cruelty of the world, a soul being treated with boundless sympathy after what it's been forced to endure and the struggles that've been had weathering the hardships of life. It's powerfully profound and powerfully empathetic and relatable for anyone.

None of his talents are ever monetized. It comes close with the possible salon opening but it never happens. Several people throughout the movie also offer to correct his hands but none of them follow through with it. It shows that Edward gives everything of himself and received nothing in return.

    • @tornadochaser2457

Some people have a more cynical view of the film. I think Edward was indeed thriving in the environment for the most part, hence that gorgeous snow, though he certainly had his challenges to face. In the dinner table discussion, it's shown that Edward is getting paid for his sculptures - Now, Bill criticised Edward for not personally charging, but Peg was overseeing the project and making sure he got paid. Marge didn't pay him, instead giving him a box of cookies she made herself, but she likely viewed this as a nice change of pace considering all the money he was getting from his other projects.

One of Tim Burtons best movies ever. Johnny Depp's best roles too. No person has ever been so accepting as this mom...right? Wait...who's parents ever told their kids to never touch their face??? Well accept for maybe the past two years, but before that...No. Everyone always makes fun of waterbeds as if there was something terrible about them. I had a waterbed for years and it was wonderful. It was the most comfortable thing I ever slept on. I think the bad reputation all comes from misinformation and assumptions. But it sure would be bad with scissor hands. The inventor is played by Vincent Price, famous for his roles in early horror movies. He was basically the king of horror in the early years of film. Iconic seeing him in this role. I love the way this film plays out as a modern day fairy tale. Such a great film.

This is such a beautiful movie, both in visuals and in perfectly timed comedy. I have a huge soft spot for Tim Burton films they always deliver.
I think it’s unique the angle they go with him being adjusted to the suburb life and to the neighbors of the family he’s living with. You can tell they aren’t convinced he should stick around until after they see what he can do. Then, they are all over him, thinking about how he can benefit him, and not what he really needs. Some of them meant well, but most just thought about themselves. He starts getting taken advantage of, then the hospitality turns sour because it’s not making him happy anymore. Then the minute he makes more mistakes then they can handle, or goes against what they want for him he becomes a monster to them that they want to shut out or kill. very tragic but also just such an interesting take on a Frankenstein’s monster type story.
Beetle Juice is a really amazing movie too, it’s actually my favorite out of all his movies and I know your going to enjoy it.
On the topic of horror films though, have you ever reacted to Woman in Black ( 2012), it’s a really great movie. Daniel Radcliffe is in it and he kills it. Mostly just jump scares and such, I don’t think there’s much gore. I haven’t seen it in a few years so a few details are fuzzy, but I just remember really loving it. It was the first thing other than Harry Potter I’d seen him in.

    • @phantomzone2725
      @phantomzone2725 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, the movie was mostly based on Burton's own experiences on suburb life during his youth because - according to him on many interviews - he couldn't socialize with his neighbors nor their kids, so he drew himself as a thin man with messy hair and huge blades on the fingers as a symbol of his loneliness, which obviously inspired the movie years later

It was a beautifully written story about the simplest and purest form of romantic love imaginable. There was no sex involved in their romance, nothing truly physical at all. Perhaps a lesser-known fact: Tim Burton met Danny Elfman personally from watching him play live through his band Oingo Boingo. Prior to that meeting, Danny had never done composing before, he was only known as a singer-songwriter for this quirky indie band. They both were instrumental to eachother's rise in popularity. Especially with Nightmare Before Christmas - Elfman did all the singing for Jack in that movie. I can't imagine what it would've been like without him, he's amazing.
I grew up on everything Burton/Elfman. The first time I watched Edward Scissorhands I was in my early tweens - perhaps a little too young to be watching it but I got a lot out of it and I would always cry at the end when he had to flee and return to the castle. I resonated with him a lot. Being a social outcast really sets you up to get your heartstrings pulled on by this movie, lol.

As someone who is 31 years old and has slept on a water bed since he left the crib, I can say that it is regular mattresses that I have issues sleeping on. My water bed is comfy and when it gets cold in the winter, my bed is heated.

Oh, so wholesome to see this movie gets appreciated as it should) I watched it first time years ago when I was thinking of paths in life and career and it actually really pushed me into art and cinema industry)
Where did Edward image come from…I kinda remember Tim Burton said once he draw guy with scissors instead hands on the school table when he was kid, and stuck with this character until he’s grown up. There’s really lots of very personal motives in this movie…Like having Vincent Price, Burton’s childhood hero and role model as creator of Edward, and all.
Amazing fairytale. Thank you for refreshing this impressions for us, I think now it’s time to show it to my younger sister.

    (01) As I understand it, the creation of Edward was a collective effort: Burton had done a conceptual drawing of a character that ultimately became Edward, but didn't know what to do with the idea once the piece was finished. He then handed the drawing off to screenwriter Caroline Thompson and asked her to craft a story around it. The original intention was for the "Scissors" aspect of "Edward Scissorhands" to be figurative, as the character (as conceived) had incredibly sharp fingers akin to scissors that prevented him from touching anything. But when the concept was handed off to "Stan Winston Studios", the company tasked with physically realizing the character, they interpreted the term "Scissorhands" literally, and didn't realize the miscommunication until the hands made of actual scissors had been finished, at which point Burton decided to run with it.
    (02) Maybe I'm reaching, but I find Edward Scissorhands to be a fascinating double-feature when paired with Burton's fallow-up "Batman Returns", because it feels like each film represents a counter point to the other and that Edward/The Penguin, Kim/Catwoman are opposite sides of the same coin.
"Edward Scissorhands" presents Edward's preoccupation with Kim through an incredibly sympathetic lens, a subjective view where the lonely outsider's desire to belong rationalizes his voyeurism of Kim. The Penguin meanwhile presents this desire through an objective view, where the audience can see Oswald projecting expectation on to the women he comes in contact with, and is shown how repellent this behavior can be to people.
I think it's telling that Burton's take on Catwoman, a survivor of sexual assault*, dresses in a costume that has giant stitches, suggesting that it was made from material that had been cut to pieces by scissors and then sown back together again.
*It's made less explicit in the movie, but the shooting draft for "Batman Returns" heavily implies that the rape that Catwoman prevents was about to be perpetrated by a man who had previously victimized Selina.

Hey Thor, loyal subscriber here. 'Preciate that you're not stingy with content. I came for "Buffy" but I stay for the movies. I have to pay for data already so I can't afford Patreon, but can I at least suggest "Ed Wood"? Based on a true story and features an Oscar winning performance by Martin Landau as Bela ("Dracula") Lugosi.
BTW You may know his daughter (Juliet Landau) as Drusilla from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". She has a small part in the movie too!

She really is that sweet. I got to hang out with her for a couple of hours back in like 1993 or 1994. It's a long story. We knew someone in common and I had the pleasure of talking to her at length. I didn't even know she was an actress when I met her. A few months later I saw Parenthood and I was like - - hey - - that's the Diane I just met. I'm a fan now, and pretty much love all her work. She's got a very unique screen persona. This film was perfect for her. It's worth checking out more of her films. Anyway, another lovely reaction. P.S. The creator is played by the late, great Vincent Price. His daughter is in the film as well - - she plays the aggressive blonde reporter. P.P.S. Waterbeds suck.

As I said in my comment on your Batman Returns video, Tim Burton loves the Frankenstein approach to character writing. 😁 This is a fantastic example of what it means to be a Tim Burton movie. And with Beetlejuice coming up, you're in for a wild time.
RIP to Vincent Price - thespian, patron and legend!

    Thor, just to clarify,
If you listen to the dinner table discussion, Edward was getting paid for his sculptures, but Bill criticised Edward for not personally charging - Peg was overseeing the project and ensuring he got paid. Marge gave him a box of cookies she made as payment, but I don't think this is bad - I think she saw it as a refreshing change of pace due to all the money Edward was getting from his other projects.
Bill has debilitated hearing, it's why he doesn't hear Edward's reaction when he tastes alcohol, why he doesn't hear what he says Joyce did, and why he doesn't note the dinosaur sculpture Edward makes - This being metaphorical of the townspeople finding it hard to successfully hear the events surrounding Edward, with this being shown when Bill can't hear Jim kicking Edward out of the house.
It's said twice during the film that Jim's father is very rich, and Jim had already broken in and stolen valuables from his father's house. His father knows it must be him as he knows he's a monster, so Jim needed a patsy i.e. Edward. Jim could see that Edward loved Kim to the point where he wouldn't reveal the truth about the robbery situation. Joyce's rumour about Edward demonised him as an unstable, nasty, sexually forceful adult, masquerading as an innocent child-like person ( *SPOILER ALERT FOR BATMAN RETURNS* pretty much The Penguin from Tim Burton's next film, Batman Returns), and that's why the neighbourhood turned on him, with the robbery situation giving enough credence to that notion. Jim then jumped on this and is revealed to be evil like her, when he kicks Edward out of the house (this is a revelation and a twist).
The names all have meaning in this film Thor, it's a fun maze to go through, it reveals why Edward couldn't conform to society, but there's a few other things complimenting this as well, such as the housewives enthrallment with gossip, and the psychologist's detached approach of looking at things via his documental analysis, rather than actively engaging in his subject in a personable way.
