Am I Sinful If I Don't Forgive Them? - Nouman Ali Khan (Urdu Q&A 16 - Pakistan)

  • In seeking guidance on the matter of forgiveness, our dear Aunty and dedicated student inquired with Ustadh Noman Ali Khan during the Akhri Moujza (Divine Speech Urdu) program in Pakistan. Her questions revolved around the extent of forgiveness and whether it is warranted for an untrustworthy individual. Additionally, there was a concern about being sinful by not extending forgiveness in such cases.
Are we obligated to forgive someone even if they don't 'deserve' it? Will Allah SWT punish us if we don't do so? What does the Quran or examples from the Sunnah say about this?
Ustadh Nouman shares his insights and thoughts on this complex issue.

Forgiveness, does not mean we go back to how we were. Most people want you to forget what they did.

But forgetting means we forget our experience of those people and become normal with them

Some people doesn't deserve forgiveness as they're not sincere enough to even say sorry with their whole heart. Their ego restricts them to even ask for proper forgiveness

This has given me so much peace….There are people who repeatedly hurt you & then try to act normal as if it’s their right to choose when they can hurt some one & then come back & start acting all normal.

It was just a brotherly suggestion in a sarcastic way not to compare an alim with others(because he himself says not to compare with anyone) in any aspect be it about knowledge of quran o hadees, knowing a particular language, secondly don't praise someone so much so that it seems to be exaggeration. That's what I wanted to say and may be I said it not in a proper way.

Brother first off I'm a sister😊 and I really felt bad after typing my comment. Bro i knw what you're saying and I totally get you however I would still I'm not exaggerating my praise for Ustadh. I just said what I observed. He's been living in the states and uses English more than Urdu like just listen to his lectures and you'll be mindblown. It amazes me that his Urdu is so perfect even better than natives cz lemme tell you I don't live in Pakistan but have studied in a Pakistani school and meet dozens of Pakistani people it's just I hate how all of them are trying super hard like when English isn't even necessary to the point where's it's cringey and embarrassing and it just makes them look like a fool. Like use English an Urdu separately. You're ruining both languages at the same time. Jazak Allah bro may Allah bless I hope your feelings weren't hurt. May Allah bless you.

This is NOT forgiveness. I am so sorry to read what you are going through. If it was a one off incident or strangers you didn't live with then you can work on your heart to let go off fear, hurt, rage whatever and forgive someone. But you are right. Being asked to endure other people's bad behaviour repeatedly is just that and nothing to do with forgiveness. Is there no-one you can ask to mediate for you? Or a friend you can spend a night with and just catch your breath so that you can think? Do you have a good doctor you can talk to, someone in the mosque? It's a very hard situation and I shall pray for you sister ❤️

@@piqueny8872 I know what you mean about imams. They're useless or worse than most of the world over. I reverted from Christianity and it took years to learn that in Islam no-one offers pastoral care. It's all well and good women having such rights, but how do they get them? It's not good enough to say that they should, because not everyone is honourable and if you either have no family or a non practicing one then who will demand your rights for you? Not the Iman or sheikh. I have no easy answers for you except that things do change. And usually when we least expect it, Alhamdulil'Allah things can change and move very quickly. We must be ready to take the chance when it comes. Try and watch the second video and see if that helps? Ultimately it's all those annoying clichés that are so true,we can only change ourselves, but we will be ready to take opportunities that come out way and when we change it slowly changes those around us. N.A.K. has a different take on it.. watch the video xx

The eldest person in our family guilt trips and asks us to continuously forgive the problematic people. I have done that in the past but I have been bitten by the same snake several times because I was led to believe if I forgive and forego, the next person will not hurt me. But they did. Several times. On several occasions. My heart refuses to trust the particular problematic person and also refuses to forgive because at the slightest chance, they immediately start pointing fingers at my character and my upbringing.

We r in Egypt and we just escaped the war in Sudan, and she has been torturing me for the past 8 months and a half. She is trying to corner me into a situation where i do something stupid and she calls the police and throws me into prison or mental hospital prison. She did this to me in sudan too and she tried to drive me crazy. But ive been praying to Allah ever since for my own sanity but she keeps coming for me. My family has no mercy on me. My brothers my sister nor my father. They all aid her in putting me thru pure misery idk if intentional or unintentional except my father. Hes a good person and doesnt like her at all. Always think yourself first. Allah doesn't burden us to make everyone happy, he takes care of his abds and we're not rab. We are sometimes not powerful enough to empatise with ourself and others at the same time. So choose yourself. Sometimes we may go beyond and do wrong while thinking ourselves because we are just humans and we should ask forgiveness from Allah. But Allah cares about you and never wants you to be wronged, never.

Forgiving is often confused with forgetting. Forgiving is good for the person who has been wronged. To let go of the bad feeling. If someone genuinely asks for your forgiveness,if you can, it's always a good thing to try. BUT! That doesn't open the door for you to be foolish. You don't forget to be careful. Someone has shown you what they're capable of. They may change they may not. But the saying is "Fool me once, shame on you (because you took advantage of me). Fool me twice? Shame on me.(Because I let you fool me again,I didn't remember the lesson) But I can still forgive for my own health and sanity.

In bahasa Indonesia, forgiving is me-maaf-kan. Asking for forgiveness is minta (ask) maaf. I didn't know in Urdu it sounds the same : maaf

Recite this beautiful Dua daily 🤍
Allahumma inni as’aluka ilman nafi’an, Wa rizqan tayyiban, Wa amalan mutaqabbalan.
    ‎اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلا
“O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision and acceptable deeds.”
May Allah grant us sincere and beneficial knowledge that enlightens our hearts and minds, a provision that is wholesome and abundant, and deeds that are accepted in His sight, paving the way for our success in this life and the Hereafter.

Probably most of the people get confused with Forgiving and Dealing. These are 2 separate things , you can forgive someone and do not have to deal with the same person.

What if they're doing not much right now like they did before. but You're continuously scared by their presence, and you cannot trust them coz they didn’t create a trustful environment for you. And You're financially dependent on them and can't maintain a peaceful distance.
    Am I an ungrateful person??

But Rasool SAW Forgave him . He did not tell wahshi that I will not forgive you. He told him not to show him his face as it reminds him of how his uncle was killed. Forgiving and forgetting are two different things I suppose. If somebody is really sorry , are we allowed to say, come what may I am not going to forgive. We may not forget the wrong that he has done, we may not be emotionally attached to that person ever again like before. But so far as forgiving is concerned , is there an authentic saying that would prove that one has a right not to forgive ( if the person is asking forgiveness) and say that I will take revenge in hereafter rather than forgiving you here.

      Read Surah As-Shura 40-43
"The reward of an evil deed is its equivalent. But whoever pardons and seeks reconciliation, then their reward is with Allah. He certainly does not like the wrongdoers. There is no blame on those who enforce justice after being wronged. Blame is only on those who wrong people and transgress in the land unjustly. It is they who will suffer a painful punishment. And whoever endures patiently and forgives-surely this is a resolve to aspire to."

“Who spend [in the cause of Allah ] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good” [Al ‘Imran 3:134]
“If [instead] you show [some] good or conceal it or pardon an offense - indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Competent” [an-Nisa 4:149]
“And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient” [an-Nahl 16:126]
“And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination” [ash-Shura 42:43]
“But if you pardon and overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful” [at-Taghabun 64:14].

I agree with most of what was said in the video, however, what was said about Wahshi reminded me of the incident where a companion, in a battle, was about to kill someone and they said the kalima And the companion killed them anyways bcz they doubted their intentions and the prophet SAW was extremely angry at them, asking did you tear open his chest? (To have known what his intentions were?)
I know that this was an impromptu convo so NAK probs didn't think this out properly but he seems to be implying that Wahshi only accepted Islam out of fear, this is something that we should avoid. Esp since he went on to fight battles for islam and even killed musaylmah the kazzab
