  • Over time, blades will shorten as they are sharpened. When the edge of the blade shortens too much, you will need to re-shape and re-sharpen it in order to keep using it. Discover the traditional Japanese method of "ura-dashi" and "ura-oshi" to make your precious plane blade look brand new. You don't have to be a seasoned craftsman to follow these steps. Let's get the groove on!
In this video, we go over these important, easy-to-follow steps to help re-shape and sharpen the backside or "ura" of your hand plane:
    - Reshaping the Blade's Edge
    - Tools to Prepare
    - How to Perform the "Ura-dashi"
    - How to Perform the "Ura-oshi"
    - Checking & Reshaping Again
    - Ready to Sharpen
Japanese hand planes require less power to smooth uneven surfaces and correct warping on the wood. In addition, Kakuri uses high-quality carbon steel for the plane's blade to ensure a much sharper and smoother finish and a more enjoyable woodworking experience.

I recently bought 5 Japanese style planes from eBay. Upon receipt I found two of the blades had been drilled through.
First; Have you seen this or know why this would be done?

      Thanks for the comment!
I don't know which part has the hole, but maybe that is a planer with a good quality iron.
Bridges manufactured in the past were made of good quality iron that is not available today.
When the iron from the dismantled bridges was used to make the planer blades, some planers seem to have holes left after the bolts.

So these plane blades are concave? Not like the blades in UK flat chunk of cheap metal
