I think it's still part of the proscribed proper in the funeral rite according to the 1970 Missal (correct me if I'm wrong). Parish management subbing random hymns for the proscribed Propers, not having any knowledge Gregorian chant despite Vatican II saying it has the place of honor, and having not concept of music or how to encourage it to be done right - all these are interesting sociological features of the Roman Church, at least in the anglophone countries.
