      It's hard in Japan, because they don't have a lot of immigrants like in America. Immigration laws are strict there. In US, you would just hire a bunch of illegals to do the work. Ramen is very competitive, if you overcharge people will just go somewhere cheaper.

    Sorry for lots of stuff! Sorry for all the ums. This was a one take affair. Sorry for those patrons who thought this type of thing would be exclusive. I really wanted to share, so, if you're feeling upset, I get it. Please let me know how you'd like to see perks handled (I'm still very new to it). Sorry for the length, although, that's kind of the point, since it's off the cuff talking about the shoot, like I'd be talking to a friend who's interested. I'm sure I'm sorry for something else, but I'll just shut up now! Oh wait, the original video can be found at th-cam.com/video/gmIwxqdwgrI/w-d-xo.html, in case you're wondering what it's the commentary for.

      No apologies necessary, Greg. This was a great listen. Very conversational. Sounded natural, so I wasn't at all conscious of the "ums."

      As one of your Patron supporters I don't mind that you made this video public. However it does sort of invalidate the $3 a month perk so you should either come up with a new perk for that level (perhaps the mailing list?) or get rid of it altogether.
      Also put the Patron link in your video descriptions, don't force people to look for it. To go from a video to your Patron page you currently have to go to your channel page, click on the about tab and then the Patron link.

    • @LifeWhereImFromX
      @LifeWhereImFromX  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hey, thanks for your feedback +Brained05. Really good to know, especially from a Patron. I still have some random footage from things I shoot but never have enough of to piece together a proper video, so maybe that could be the $3 perk. Also, I don't know if I'd always release the commentaries, but I wanted to do at least for this first one. What about early access, like have it avail. only to Patrons for a week before I release. Kind of guarantee a response to any questions and get to see first.
      Oh, I'll add the link to this video description right away then! I did it in the other two special docs, but didn't think to put it in this one. I guess I can put in my default upload description so it's always there. Thanks!

    The storytelling from the final cut was great. Keep it up. I'm actually going to watch it for a second time.
    On a different note, he needs an apprentice in that ramen shop. The business needs to be able to keep going even if he takes a day off or gets sick. Other than that, this guy's loving what he does for a living.

    I saw the ramen video and now this documentary. Thanks for the message from this video.
    This ramen owner, Kunimoto, is really tough man. He works all day long and is able to keep his cool and always keep his smile. I admire such tough business people. So much to learn from there.
    Best of luck to him and to you as you also mentioned about how you struggled to keep business going to support living and family.

    I lived in Japan 2014-2016, and I've been to dozens of these tiny ramen restaurants. I never had a bad ramen in Japan. It was very enlightening to know how much work it took to make a simple bowl. Wonderful documentary! Well done!

    really enjoyed the actual documentary and this commentary video. Like you mentioned, it would have been interesting to see how Kunimoto-san actually makes the Ramen (maybe not a specific one to protect his recipe, but how he usually goes about developing his own ideas and such). It would have also been interesting to see what the apprenticeship phase was like. Definitely would love to see a part 2 of the documentary if he's ever willing to let you film more :) If not, I hope you still do more of this kind of a "Day in the life of _____" series

  • @LifeWhereImFromX
    @LifeWhereImFromX  8 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    I don't like watching videos where I'm talking, and there's no script to this one, so I don't know where or how I mentioned multiple parts. I don't think I'd do a multiple part series of videos on ramen. However, doing another video, where I concentrate on making ramen and apprenticing, that'd be cool to do some day.

      I think alot of people really appreciate this widely different culture coming from America/Canada(myself). Something I will probably never experience but can still live vicariously through you. I really appreciate your presentation and effort that you put into your videos.

    A lot of people on the original video seemed to use this to attack the bad work culture in japan.
    Although it is true that the long hours are indeed very common, this is something that is completely irrelevant to the work culture of a bigger environment. This is just pure passion and a pure heart in doing what one believes to be great work; something truly everyone can learn from.

    greg you did a good job with this documentary. you could have added more information about personal life and sacrifices that kumimoto made. it would be interesting to see him prepping and busting his ass just to show ppl the hard work it takes to own your own business. Also when you first wanted to do documentaries i honestly didnt think they would be as interesting but you picked very interesting topics and I am happy to say that I was wrong. keep up the good work greg.

    The Ramen shop video was really interesting and informative ! I admire the owner's work ethic. For me, even a 40hr week is quite tiring, especially when you are really busy. I can't imagine working a 60 or 70 hour week ! I expect it is hard finding part time staff as the pay is probably not great and the work is busy with unsociable hours. You did a good job shooting the video, the restaurant is so small I'd be really worried about getting in the way.

    Watched both the original and this one! I enjoyed both equally and fully support continuing these (2-part, 2 channel) mini-documentaries. A topic I'd like to suggest ONLY in this mature channel is Japanese work ethics and probably a video that touches upon Japanese suicide Forest since it is kinda cause and effect. I understand if it's too grim I support both channel's format and intended audience.

    Literally just watched the original video. This is really awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing! If you get the chance, I'd love to see videos on some of the more "out in the public" things, like libraries, any parades or festivals, and more.

    • @LifeWhereImFromX
      @LifeWhereImFromX  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll probably do a bit of that on the main channel. Library would be kind of neat as I don't think too many people film in there. For the parades and festivals, I feel a lot of people cover that already, so while I may do one if the opportunity lands in my lap, it's not something I'll be actively pursuing.

    You did a great job with the original video, it's really inspiring to see how hard the owner is working and how nice the video shots were made. And it's also fun to hear some more about you and your back ground Greg, especially since it can be connected to the ramen owner. Me myself have been working at a fast food restaurang, but not as the top owner, but I did have an employment with lots of responsibilities with long days, weeks and of course, stressed days. I loved working with my co-workers, but the job in it self was making me a more and more sad and angry person, but today I'm not working there anymore thankfully. It's kinda unbelievable to see someone working so hard for six days a week and long days, but I guess that it isn't as hard as you might think when you are doing what you love and I'm inspired to feel the same way one day.
    I really enjoy watching your more family oriented videos with Aiko and Shin-Chan but these kind of videos are so, so interesting! Especially because of Japans very unique culture and I've always been fascinated by it.
    Keep up the good work Greg, and I'm thrilled to see more from you and your family! :)

    It took me a while to find the time to watch this video but I'm very glad I did. I like this kind of.. backround information, getting to hear what you planned for the documentary and what's your opinion in different matters. After all you're the "master mind" behind the whole LWIF set up and it's nice to know a bit more about your motivation and plans; as well as, in this case, Kunimoto-san's.
    Maybe you liked it too (to share your side of the story), because I'd love to see more of those "behind the scenes" type of videos!

    I loved this documentary and would love to see more of the foodie aspects you hope to film in the future. Sounds like he has lots of "secret ingredients" to his delicious looking broths. Thanks for making these. The original video was a great little documentary, but I also found all the extra details that didn't make it into the original really interesting. If Kunimoto somehow finds the time to squeeze in more interviews or some other kind of follow up on how the ramen is made, that would probably be really interesting. Btw, I also thought your previous documentary on getting by in a wheel chair was pretty good. I look forward to whatever you produce next.

    It'd be great if you did a short check-in video with Kumimoto-san a year or so from now. I imagine many people would like to see if he ends up finding part-timers, if he's able to bring back discontinued menu items, and maybe a little more about Kumimoto's methodology as you mentioned in this video.
    Also, congrats on the popularity of the doc! It looks to be well on track to become one of your most popular videos.

    I actually think it's good you didn't film in your ideal situation because I firmly believe the best stuff is created when under a parameter of restrictions. If you took all the time in the world to film sexy camera shots and an in depth discussion with Kunimoto-san, then that would've distracted and removed the feeling of impermanence, of distance and removal combined with that fast-paced, bustling edge that means business. I liked that. Plus, that's what the director's cut and commentary is for ;D You have good instincts in editing. Your documentary fulfilled it's purpose in showing a day in the life and now I know how crazy and ridiculously hard owning a ramen shop is. Major respect and appreciation!
    As for a comprehensive look into Kunimoto-san's formative years, experiences and his process, I believe that warrants another video which I would love.
    PS: I'm curious as you how many bowls he sells a day just to get an idea of his turnover.

    Hey Greg, Awesome work on this video, really great to watch and listen to! Seriously cool videography, you really captured the emotion even whilst cutting out some of the parts, really really good work :D
    Im going to head to Japan end of Feb, and will have to make a stop here (along with any other places you recommend!), also looking to get into a bit of video making whilst over here and while i have the source material, so your tips and methods to filming and story telling I found really helpful! *Subtle request for more of this*
    Looking forward to more great content,
    Matt from NZ

    Hi Greg. I truly enjoy all of documentaries you make and find them inspiring. Just a quick idea, how about publishing separate video of interview when possible? You always seem to find interesting people to talk to, so I think it would be great to hear more of their story that that couldn't make it in the original documentary :)

    • @LifeWhereImFromX
      @LifeWhereImFromX  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't be opposed to doing that on the Patreon feed. But, the big issue is that a lot of the interviews will be in Japanese, so if you understand, great, but I don't think the majority of the viewers do. Translating takes a long time (it took my wife all day to get both the English to Japanese and Japanese to English done). So, doing it for the entire interview... unless someone wanted to volunteer, it's just too much for unfortunately.
