As a Croatian in Germany, I don't know why, but they make me so proud living here. Such a herritage of a company and really excellent paper! I didn't know for it for a year but when I was told by local seller in Kaiserslautern about it I just don't use other paper. Just ordered A6 format for winter dog walk sketches in a forest nearby. And proud of you promoting it as well, as I really wish more people knowing about it so they can avoid .. don't want to mention.. other companies that are in a price range by quality way off! My strongest reccomendation for even non cotton papers they make! You can even order personalised writing on a cover if you want! I will visit their factory in summer for sure! Tnx once again on a video and I like your sketches a lot

Hi Marti. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a New Yorker expat living abroad) and a subscriber to your channel.
5 years after it was created, EXCELLENT video, if not the BEST video I've seen on Artist paper, covering all (history, manufacturing, mixed media use, etc.).
And... very helpful for us living in Europe.
Hahnemuhle is considered an EXCELLENT paper for artists on this side if the pond and good quality for price, considering other high quality alternatives (cheaper than Stillman & Burns or Strathmore, for example).
Even though 5 years have past and I come late to the party... THANK YPU for such a great content.
    Cheers from Sunny Spain!
    😁👍😎

Hi Jim - Thanks for the kind remarks about the video and Hahnemuhle. I love their papers and most especially their new 100% cotton sketchbooks. When I was a kid I spent a year living in NYC, near Brooklyn. I remember how cool the Subway was and Coney Island. Upstate NY is also a wonderful place with beautiful countryside. Last time I was in Spain, I was in Barcelona, on a beach and drinking Spanish wine (I was 19). Great to hear from you.

Thanks, Marty, for the thorough review. I am a big fan of Hahnemühle...but had never the courage to them like you did. They are so precious! I also have the sketchbooks (in A6 and A5 size) and love them to paint in trips or in Plein air. Inhale not thought about ink on watercolour paper. Will give it a go. As you say, they think more the little things. It is amazing they have been making paper for over 450 years! Thanks for sharing and have lots of fun with all the beautiful papers!

I heard about these papers in the Wet Paint newsletter that I recently subscribed to. One thing I can say about products made in Germany: They build quality products. My first car was a Buick Opel. It is an American brand; but, it was built in Germany. It was a terrific first car. I wonder if I can find sample packs.

HP Arches paper is expensive but one of my favorite papers and equal to Archers is the heavy workhorse paper from Hahnemühle and half the price, that is if you buy it in Europe, I don't know what it costs in the US. It is excellent with mixed media and is able to take a lot of beating. Inks, watercolor, acrylic and colored pencil drawings with white spirit for blending etc. it has never failed me. Thank you, Marty Owings, for your great intro to this paper, it sure deserves a place on the Art wall of fame.

I can recommend another excellent cotton rag paper called Saunders waterford, both the HP and the textured, have you tried that one? but I have to say, it is on the more expensive side. thank you, Marty.

Whomever you give them to, they will enjoy them. I know the Gaines are quitting, they are involved in too many things. Now they have a show for the carpenter Clint and his wife. Take care Essie.

I love how much work and passion you put into this introduction to the company and it's papers and the amount of background information you put in.
I personally love their papers, simply for the quality, even though they are on the pricy side.
The only thing I don't like is the pronounciation. :D As a fellow german I have to say, that the way that it is pronounced in this video, for both the english and the german version,
is completely wrong. That is most german's biggest pet peeve when a non-german speaker reviews products or companies with german names.
The same goes für Städtler, Schmincke, Faber-Castell etc. The letters and their combinations basically dont exist in english. E.g. the ,,h'' makes the vowel before it longer.
And Ü, Ä and Ö simply dont exist in english at all and is more common in languages like german or turkish (even though it's just ü there).

Dear Marty on a recent Podcat with Steve Yourself and Stuart (unsure of the name as only caught a piece of it a watercolorist and framer)Stuart mentioned that he uses matte board to draw on . I recently got a lot of board offcuts from my local framer and I unsure if it is matte board or mount board. My questions are
1.Is there any way to test if a board is acid free or not? I have seen some pens advertised but there are post that state that these pens are unreliable
2.If an unarchival board is primed and coated with a surface such as watercolor ground, pastel gesso, normal gesso can this make the surface archival?
3.Can I use a non acid free surface to mount canvas on?For example sticking the entire canvas down with acid free glue to the matte board? Will the non acid free matte board damage the canvas?
4.Can I use the non acid free surface as a mounting board to an acid free surface such as pastel paper or watercolor paper . Or will the watercolor paper, pastel paper be compromised from mounting to a non acid free surface . Please note I will mount with acid free glue.?
    5. Can I use the non acid free surface as just a paper stretcher for canvas?

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Rhom - Hope this helps.
      1. I don't know of an easy test. It's best to ask the place you got it from.
      2. That's a good question. I suppose the surface would be, but the substrate wouldn't be. Interesting.
      3. Depends on the non-acid free mount, but I would avoid this. Why take the chance when the acid-free is the same cost or a few pennies more in most cases.
      4. Same as 3.
      5. I think so.
People think they need to use art supplies that are going to last 300 years. Here's the thing, after we are dead, if our art is worth anything, many places will hire professional conservators to, "fix" our paintings, mountings, frames and so on.

It's great for urban sketching and mixed media (pencil and watercolour, pen and ink and watercolour) but for doing anything with your watercolours beyond one to two layer washes it is awful.
