Are any of your dabbling in AI for print on demand? Do you just want to vent your frustrations over AI and how it is changing surface pattern design? As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Generative AI doesn't take motifs from other people's work and then mix and match, collage style, as you might imagine. It uses existing works that it's seen as a reference (mathematically) and then tries to construct motifs from scratch, of a particular thing, in a particular style. Much the same way as "human" artists do but using an entirely different process.
That's why you get the anomalies, because it doesn't stand back and asses what it's produced and think "nope, don't like that. That fox has only three legs". It's not thinking about what it's doing in a thoughtful and reasoned way. It's just using mathematics.
The fox in your example is a classic depiction of a fox taken from Scandinavian folk art. It's a common motif that's been used by many artists, many times, over many years.
It's not stealing anything. At least no more than we humans do, all the time.
Technology has replaced many jobs that existed in the past, ever since the beginning of the industrial revolution, and it will continue to do so.

Been also thinking of surrendering myself to the dark side too.

I recommend at least taking a dip -- just to see

I say if it looks exactly like a famous piece of artwork, don't use it. But other than that, I find it very useful, especially for creating mockups. I can create 3D images depicting simple things like walls, tabletops, laundry rooms. Of course you may get a bunch of screwed up images that don't follow the rules of what a proper laundry room looks like, depending on which AI software you use, they all do different types of images differently. You might get images with 3 washers. You have to test them all out to see what's best for each type of image. I like mockups from certain sites and not others. Same with pics of animals, some AI sites do a good job, and some don't. You have to be very specific. If you want palm trees on a beach, you have to tell the AI that the palm trees have to be growing out of the beach, and where all these things should be located and exactly what they look like. Your lollipops might not have sticks, and your unidentifiable animals are mutated with 3 legs or no legs. You also need to prompt AI to spell things out correctly like "Happy Birthday" for a birthday cake as the AI will try to change the spelling so that it looks different as to not infringe. When creating animals, you have to prompt AI to give the animals their proper amounts of legs, etc. You're constantly having to tweak your prompts, seeing how it reflects in the changes. It's quite addictive. Through lots of testing, you should find at least a few images that are useable for various projects, or images that can be edited.

I've been hearing AI is great for mockups. For sure, AI is here to stay, so there is no use fighting it completely. It sounds like you are delving deep into it and doing some pretty cool things!

I think the AI looks a many different foxes in the style that you asked for and gives you something in that style. So, the AI sort of does what you did by tweaking images like you did. I could be wrong, but think that's how it works. It does what you did, only faster. And, like you, it keeps learning!

Thanks for your analyzing this new development. Just like you I find it hard to believe that it is OK (and legal) to sell these tweaked images. Feels very unfair to the original artist indeed. As much as I'd like to be a surface pattern designer myself and as much as I'd love to speed up production - I lack patience just like you do 🙂- I don't really want to do it this way...
In the meantime I really hope that governments around the world will soon work out clear copyright rules for AI products. So that the real artists won't be drowned by the AI seller wave that is going on right now as a 'get rich quick scheme'. And I also hope that people will learn to distinguish good handmade / artistic quality instead of buyng cheap but low quality stuff (my handpainted restyled furniture is often found too expensive, people don't seem to notice and respect all the hard work - and lots of love - that goes into it.)
So we've got to wait and see where this goes, and find good way for ourselves to deal with it. To al the artists out there: keep up you're lovely work. Let's show the world some original, creative, outside the box, handmade beauty 😍

I love your insights. I think eventually there will be a move towards the handmade. At least- I hope so!!

Puedes entrenaYou can train the AI LEONARDO with photographs of your illustrations to create your own "model". Then, you request with a prompt for the AI to generate an image with your model in your style.
