In the '70s, my brother and I used to nag our father into playing our pop radio station in the car. This is one of the only songs he ever liked. Many years later, upon learning details of his life he never revealed, I understood why.
The last set of verses really hit home for me. I lost my father several years ago and I remember how my mother would say she felt alone in a crowded room. When she passed away this song popped into my head and yes I cried all day also.
What amazes me the most is how each verse tells a story, almost completely and his ability to pack so many syllables and phrases into a single melodic line... That's art!
This song is truly for us loners out here in this world, i remember back when this song first came out years ago and it means even more now that I've spent all my lonely years.
I love this song. It strikes a chord. I am alone most of the time. But never thought of myself as lonely. I guess if I don't grasp the difference, then I must not be lonely.
Jimmy Jennings, I'm right there with you friend, in the same boat, single my entire life and never married. I guess we can take some solace in the fact there are other loners out there as well as us. They say God has a plan for each of us, I certainly believe that, but it doesn't mean we have to understand/like it...
Brings me such tender sweer memories! My sweet dear husband Bill rest in peace chosed this beautiful song for our wedding day! He was 19 and was 18 we were married 45 wonderful years and I could not adk for anything more. I misse him very much and my life is empty without him.
The lyrics in this song are so masterfully telling a story of loneliness. Verses such as "when she passed away, I cried and cried all day" and "if he really does exist then why did he desert me."
Another loneliness pop classic of that Era was the Carpenters Goodbye to Love, Karen's voice still haunts me delivering those sad and melancholy lyrics as only she could, also Janis Ian's At Seventeen was also a classic in that mode.

My favorite artists and entertainers include Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Eagles, Bruno Mars, Prince, Nat Cole, Carpenters, Beatles...not in any order....But my favorite SONG of all time is this one right here by Gilbert O'Sullivan, Naturally. I was brought up listening to Gilbert. My Mum, bless her, loved his music. I often sit quietly and listen to his music. Brings back lovely memories of my Mum. This is probably my favourite Gilbert song.
OM GEE!! I've listened to this song for many years, and never paid a lot of attention to the lyrics until now! The melody is very catchy, but the words are very depressing and dystopian!! As a niece who had an aunt who committed suicide due to a doctor's court-proven malpractice, and after much studied reasoning for one taking their own life; the proven results are that the individual only wants out of their pain, not to die. Suicide is a permanent end to a temporary problem. As a true, born-again Christian, I can, with all authority say; we live in a fallen world (thank you Adam and Eve). The merciful and loving God, Jehovah, The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, (so there's no mistake or confusion from the heathen gods of the far east), Who created all creation, gave us all free will. We can choose to serve Him or reject Him. If you choose the former, you verbally and heartfeltly accept His teachings according to His Word, that includes repentance and receiving His only begotten Son, Jesus, The Christ, Who was crucified on the cross at Calvary and shed His innocent blood for the redemption of our sins and our soul being born again and reconciled unto the Father for eternal life with Him. Repeating: Living a life that lines up with His Word (The Holy Bible). Therefore that you may have remission of your sin, a relationship with God The Father, and eternal life with Him in Heaven. If you free will reject the aforementioned; at the day of judgment you will be condemned to the eternal lake of fire. Revelations 19:20, Mark 9:43 Don't castigate me, I am merely a vessel who learned of this wisdom after living a rebellious and sinful life on my own, and being very hurt along the way, before a Godly mother prayed me through to the path of righteousness.
I grew up on this song, I remember singing to it as a child.

Great song.He sang it so well.Bring back the good ole days.🤗
Still love this song. Everyone alive can relate to these lyrics .
I was 9 years old when this song came out...and it really touched my heart. It actually made me cry. As a middle kid with two older brothers and two younger brothers, I was the middle child. Never noticed, just passed on by with Parents and Grandparents, Uncles and Aunts.
Wow! What a sad song! Man! I loved it when it used to play on the radio and never realized how depressing it was.
What a glorious evocative song and just a snippet of Gilbert’s songwriting genius .. loved it when it first came out .. love it now decades later .. why are my cheeks wet with tears ?
Found this song by accident. What a beautiful song. I instantly felt I was in that time and moment.
I'm a professional musician and entertainer. I love all genres of music from R&B, Hip Hop and Rock to Country, Funk, Jazz and Standards. The lyrics are so deep, heartbreaking, and moving. And this is a flawless live performance of it. Thanks for posting. ❣❣❣
This is a heartfelt amazing tune by a gifted songwriter. This is hitting the quintessential nail squarely on the head. So many poignant lines. His entire catalog is full of gems.
Great, great song and performance 👍💯♥️

What a sad song. I remember it from when I was a kid. It didn’t bother me then. But now as an adult having lost loved ones It’s exceptionally painful.
