I retired 17 years ago but what have I done with my new freedom? I think chasing a paycheck for so long has stunted my ability to look beyond to new possibilities. At 75 my energy is gone. Years of labor that I did not enjoy seem to have left me bereft of possibilities and creative thinking. When I was young there was much talk about "automation" and I dreamed that instead of being stuck on a treadmill more of us would have become artists, writers and community organizers focused on infinite great projects. We are stuck with the 8 hour plus day when many jobs can be performed by robots but instead jobs are offshored leaving workers bereft financially and spiritually. It's no wonder that Americans are stuck in front of their TVs while they drink copious amounts of alcohol or become vociferous Trump supporters with huge American flags on their front porches. Human agency and creativity is gone and replaced with adoration of demagogues and huge anger that their lives have been lost in the process.
Tha k you professor Har ey, I totally agree with you about the connection between capitalist alienation and societal discontent and violence . Thank you for eludicating Marxs concept. Look forward to more critiques of this sort
Capitalism makes us all competitive against each other for survival. This is worsening as the fruits of labour are more and more distributed to the top 1%.
😂 Right... because no one ever suffered under Marxism. No one ever used his party power for personal gain. human greed exists in ever heart. Until you master that in every heart I intend to hang on to my right to own my stuff, and distribute it to whoever I want. Government is the problem. not capitalism. The Marxist’s answer? Give government more power. 😂 Fools. Try holding government accountable.
I think Mr Harvey has a lots of similarities between him and the great Charlie Charles chaplain in the sense of the explanation based on the details. Very abvious in his great movie city lights chaplain in the beginning of this genius movie began by showing the contradiction between how we spend a lots of money or wasting on something very stupid like the statue in this movie and we forgot the poverty and the suffering of people they are in every day. David Harvey shows you through Marx lenses the abvious but you need to pay a lots of attention because this knowledge is costly.

Problem#1: You can't outlaw technology you don't approve of and expect it to go away. #2: Capitalism is the pursuit of accumulating money, aka every society in the world. #3: Outlaw technology that reduces labor, for what reason other than to continue the master/slave relationship?
Yes, these are problems, but you seem content to let them remain problems, without consideration for those affected...because they don't presently affect you. Capitalism's obsessive pursuit of money, without regard for the existentially threatening downsides, is by far the greatest problem we presently face, because it's uncritical boosters like yourself are too busy being deniers and obstructionists that stop anything that mitigates the problems it constantly produces.

We do not live in a society where everyone can just choose to grow their own food. And it's also silly to suggest that as a collective solution.
