It’s about Kat’s (the songwriter) Grandmother who passed away. I was at a little show she played at her apartment in Cambridge, MA. Her dear friend, an elderly neighbor who was dying, was there listening too. I had to leave for a while after the song I was crying so hard.
It's been 25 years now, and as much as I try to give up the ghost, it haunts me every day. I miss you, Dad, but I understand why you had to leave us all behind, and I love you always. I hope you're flying high and singing all the songs you used to sing, I hope you're happy and that you finally got away from those demons in your head. I love you, Dad, always, and I hope to see you up there when my time here is done.
A high school friend of mine passed away and they played this at her funeral. I was so struck by it, and then I learned this band was from my home town, I got the lyrics on my leg in a tribute tattoo. This version is the most beautiful I've heard. I'd love to hear it live one day.
+aneurysm huile de colza I suppose I would guess the obvious, someone passing away. All that really matters is how I interpreted it and how it makes me feel though.
+Jey Nowicki not saying your wrong or anything...i meant if you actually had been able to find what this song meant to them writing it. Seems like Annabel was a real person.
Most beautiful folk/love song ever. Most beautiful lead singing voice so perfectly matched to the song content and message, most graceful and elegantly spare violin complement to the guitar and banjo, most sensitive portrayal of the song's message imaginable. I was and remain enthralled by the unmatched simple beauty of this musical art piece. A memory and a melody that will linger for a lifetime. Thank you Duhks.
3:08 What can I say, that hasn't already been said. This song. Oh😢 Love it. I wish I had written this song. Thank you My heart is fuller, because of you writing this song.❤❤❤
What a GREAT vibe this group puts off. You can't put together live music like this without having something special in you. Loved this from Hell on Wheels. one of the simplest, best live performances I've ever seen. up there with Talkin about a Revolution 1988 Live by Tracy Chapman
saw them at hiawatha music festival in michigan this past weekend. they were great. the female singer has got a haunting soulful sound. so relaxing and comforting. at the festival she had short blonde hair.
Absolutely love this beautiful soul. I’m taking violin lessons and want to play it🎻 this song touches my soul 🕊 Thank you for sharing this beautiful video 🙏🏽 They are incredible 👏🏼 stay safe and take care of yourself and your family and God Bless Always 🙏🏽🎻
Love is song lost my dad may 1 2013 and my best friend Bobbie at 51 October 23 ,2013 she had a rare lung disease I think y of you both ever day and would give anything you have you back ...........Dad there is nothing i wouldn't do to have you back I love you ..........Bobbie my friend I wish you would come to me like my dad does it bring me comfort
Much obliged for posting this. Have been wanting to see The Duhks perform "Annabel." Really great to see their focused yet laid-back demeanor put out a powerhouse of a song. Seems to be a slightly slower tempo than the version done on "Hell on Wheels." Love it nevertheless!
So happy to see Ms. Harvey singing with them again. Saw them with and without her. Without her they are impressive. With her they are spectacular. Can't hardly wait for them to play back in town.
Takes me back to my wife I still don't under stand there was three of us now there is only two of us left and iv done my best to raise him as we planned tina.
A beautiful recording of a beautiful song. Plus, it's with the original members of the band that self-released this on their first album (Your Daughters and Your Sons). Even better than the CD.
They will be here December 17 at the west end cultural centre, if you get the chance check it out, they are very good live. Been listening and going to all their shows for over ten years now.
I once played this song in a math class because there was a girl named Annabel in the class. She loved the song. Then the next day she told me she was mad at me because the song is about Annabel dying.
Je n'aime pas les tatouages, cette beauté d'encre indélébile à la mode des fragiles, mais j'aime beaucoup la chanson. A écouter en boucle mais à ne pas regarder.
First heard it on Hell on wheels, gives me chills Everytime I listen to it. Make me remember deep things....lost in my heart 💕
Literally how I just searched for it after it was playing while lily and Cullen were getting down LOL
My name is Annabel and this for sure will be played at my funeral.
thanks hell on wheels for introducing me to these+
great musicians

My grandmother and I shared the same birthday 9/21. Her name was Annabelle.

+Jey Nowicki do you know what its about.

+aneurysm huile de colza They actually didn't write it. Kat Goldman did. she gave it to them to perform and then did her own version later.
+Jey Nowicki Oh damn....it kinda looked like the lead singer knew Annabel from how she reacts in the start of the song. So it was for show then huh
Amazing song by an Amazing group. Heard it and them first on Hell on wheel, an amazing series. Can't get Annabel out of my head.
he'll on wheels is the favorite show I watch it over and over I love all the songs so a thumbs up
The old Bluegrass country sound is a blessing to hear. I miss it. Texas boy missing home.
Beyond stunning, I think I stopped breathing when I heard this song for the first time
if you have ever loved and lost....and ten, twenty years later you think of that past....this is the song that plays
This is one of the best songs ever written, and its a shame it isn't known more.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love it ❤
I have no words ... this song means so much. This version is so touching ...
This song and performance is really beautiful. And especially since it was featured on Hell on Wheels with Lily and Cullen.
One of my heartsongs. Never gets old, always speaks to me.

A real cross-century classic. Timeless and resonant.
Beautiful, lingering, haunting, sensational song, lyrics and singers and musicians. Loved it.

I am sorry for your losses. I lost my dad in 2003 and my mom in May 2017. Tears streaming down my face. I miss them so.
I've always loved this song ever since I first heard it.
If you ever get the chance to see them live - do it! Seen them twice & they are out of this world great!
Beautiful harmonizing, heartstrings woven on a fiddle.
A great song! Like so many others, I became aware of it and of The Duhks because of the show "Hell on Wheels". And I often play it.
Still makes me cry!!

big up Kat Goldman, who frankly doesnt have enough views on her official original version
This group does a great job on this cover. It feels deeper and more emotional than the original version by Kat Goldman. Love the Bango in this!

Tears me up!
Beautiful!
Better than the studio recorded version. That takes talent
Beautiful ❤️
I live in Winnipeg and this is the first time I heard this, only because somebody in Austria tweeted it. Good music gets around, eh?
Lucky Canadian, there's a lot of good music around your place...
They will be here December 17 at the west end cultural centre, if you get the chance check it out, they are very good live. Been listening and going to all their shows for over ten years now.
