    You say that it was the left and right being only nationalists and republicans, yet fail to mention that the left only survived as long as they did because of the anarchists. And that the nationalists were composed of monarchists and fascists (not the same thing), among other things.

    I can't believe you didn't mention the anarchists and their conflict with the stalinists. This is very important information.

      Actually, Orwell never joined them. He was en rout to joining them when instead he joined POUM, when he decided he wasn't doing much in the POUM lines he made it to Barcelona in time for the May Day fights between the Republicans, the Anarchists, and POUM. He ended up not joining them, though he initially he wanted to.

      So, you wished Hitler and Mussolini would have won? That a world with no democracy, with no race but the pure Arian, with no tolerance for religion and having your life completely controlled by a regime, is better? We are talking about freedom and human rights, and I don't care if the ideology is left or right as long as I'm free to defend my beliefs. And I know what I'm talking about because I lived, and my parents lived under Franco. My mother could not have a bank account without permission of my awful father, she could not have a passport or driver's license without permission of husband. We could not have basic health or mony because she was separated from him for being abusive but legally separation was not allowed, and I could go on. So, please before defending a dictator, think.

  • @Nehmo

    Franco was allied with the Nazis in WWII, yet we (US) embraced him afterwards and included Franco-Spain in NATO. This is a repeated pattern. We accepted what was left of the Nazis because we wanted them on our side in opposition to the Soviet Union.
    Even today, we support the neo-Nazis in Ukraine for the same reason. The policy is expedient, and some may say justified, but it is unethical. By doing this we partially become Nazis ourselves.

      Thomas Headley What "grief"?
      Actually, I'm not clear what you are saying. Perhaps if you simplify, I would.
      Now, regarding state control, we (of the US) have more of it today than the last century's dictatorships did.
      If the world ever corrects itself to the better, it will historically look back at the imprisonments of current America and the ones of Stalin as roughly the same. Although American prisons today are more survivable, the per capita numbers are higher.

      Thomas Headley Your post may be "self explanatory" to you, but you aren't writing for yourself; you're writing for a reader. You need to make one point and explain that. Otherwise, readers won't understand and you're wasting the time of both yourself and the reader.
      I'll try once more. What "grief" are you talking about? I'm not grieving about anything.

      Spain did participate albeit in a minimalistic manner if a division can be called minimalistic. But why not a full commitment? Simply put Franco wasnt an expansionist. He was only interested in shaping Spain in his vision. Why? If Spain lost (and it would have being on the side of the axis powers) then the Spain he and the Nationalist fought for would have been lost. Then...and this gets tricky...we may have had an iron curtain in the northwest of europe. After all it was vs Russia that the little commitment fought against and Stalin got what he wantec post WW2 because the others were either ill and/or sick of war. Stalin was a shrewd bastard and would have had a lot of pull in Spains future....

    • @hyperion3145
      @hyperion3145 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      James Mackenzie I heard when Franco was asked to fully commit into the war that his demands were "too much" so Hitler wanted nothing to do with him afterwards (if Franco intentionally made his demands too big to avoid war is anyone's guess), I have also heard he had accepted a bribe from Britain to stay out of the conflict... Franco's Falange did show some expansionist views however, with one of their goals after the civil war being to take back the territory of the former Spanish Empire.

    • @ezrhino100
      @ezrhino100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      franco did what he could to stay out without looking like he was an enemy of hitler or mousolini. it was purely strategic, as spain was not really a part of the axis. if he looked too 'neutral' then spain would have been red meat for either hitler or mousolini. he had his own war to take care of and took care of it. life is complicated and you make ends meet. spain flourished for a short period afterwards, now its back to square one. understanding the history of france and spain is to understand history itself. there are a tremendous amount of issues now that have direct ties to what happened to these countries in the past. but, alas, good old commie public schools wont teach the truth will they?

    • @asierescobal1248
      @asierescobal1248 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Spain didn't participate because of his civil war. After the war the country was nearly literaly destroyed, the only thing Spain could give to the Axis was a veteran army. Yet, as he regime was pro-axis and wanted to "show gratitude" to Hitler for his help, he allowed many things to germany that didn't allowed to the allies, like spies routes and safe ports, to the point that Spain sent a voluntary division to the Soviet Union front.
      Nevertheless, Spain rellied a lot economicaly on the allies, and added to the situation of the country before the war, being at war with them would have been a disaster.
      So I would say that it was a combination of both Hitler not wanted or not needed Spain, and the necesity of trade with the allies for the economy. (Also Uk bribed a lot of spanish generals to convince Franco to stay out)

    • @Libertyjack1
      @Libertyjack1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stalin lived on the other side of Europe. Stalin wouldn't have been in Spain had the Republicans won, any more than Hitler and Mussolini were by their support of Franco. Now, the foreign Moorish mercenaries that brought the war to Spain, along with the religious zealots and fascio-nazi foreign supporters, without which Franco's aristocrats would have lost the war, those certainly were in Spain.

    • @thewhiteheromainchannel

      @@Libertyjack1 I have a funny feeling that the Republicans overall goal was to eventually turn Spain into a Marxist Leninist type country.

    • @Libertyjack1
      @Libertyjack1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@thewhiteheromainchannelPerhaps more Marxist than Leninist. It was mostly an anarchist experiment to start with, but required the backing of a foreign government, upon Franco's military intervention. In any case, with the exception of France, at least during the first phase of the War, Spain faced the hostility of its neighbors, which seems to be an underlying story for any country that tries to cater to more than its wealthiest citizens.
