American Beauty is one of the albums that had a profound impact on who I grew into from my teen years into adulthood. Love it so much. ❤❤❤❤

I can see this album having an influence like that. It broadened my musical tastes and also my attitude when I finally gave it a complete listen. I went from a rock and roll/ outlaw country fan to a mellowed out hippy almost overnight.

Of the more than 50 Grateful Dead shows I attended I only saw the song "Ripple" one time, the famous among Dead Heads 9/3/88 "Ripple Show" at the Capital Center. A Saturday show, the band played their usual "One More Saturday Night", and some folks left the building, bad mistake. The band stayed on stage, smiling at each other. I was pretty close to the stage and could see this, and then they started to play the first electric version of "Ripple" in 17 years. Some people heard the first few notes, and then the door shut behind them. Oops. After, I was walking around the parking lot for about three hours saying "Did I really just see that?" One of the greatest musical events of my life. Get a tape, or video and listen to the crowd reaction.

I missed that show due to having surgery 😢
Edit: I was at the Spectrum for Unbroken Chain, though 😮

Grateful Dead is a deep rabbit hole. Great short songs and they love to jam longer songs as well. Lyricist Robert Hunter and singer/guitarist Jerry Garcia really made some beautiful songs and this is one of them.

This band is one big rabbit hole. I hope you get a lot more requests for their songs. Terrapin Station, Estimated Prophet, Bertha, Playin' in the Band, Sugar Magnolia...I could do this all day.

This song means so many different things to so many people. The lyrics are there for your choosing and perception. Airs that’s what makes this song to profound.

Great selection. This is an amazing song with lyrics by Robert Hunter and is just beautiful poetry. Beautiful words explaining a lot of life. My favorite lines in Ripple are the ones you alluded to: “You who choose to lead must follow, But if you fall you fall alone, If you should stand, then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home.” The meaning of this sentence apparently is based on a Taoist concept expressed in this quote from the Tao Te Ching written in 400 BC:
"Therefore, desiring to rule over the people,
One must in one's words humble oneself before them
And, desiring to lead the people,
One must, in one's person, follow behind them."
A kind of dialectic principle. Just google "The Annotated "Ripple" for more insights into the other lyrics.

Well said, and well understood. If only everyone with an ambition or calling to lead would follow this advice

That's a classic song from a classic album. I'd suggest the song Sugar Magnolia that's on it if you want to listen to some more. It's one of my favorite songs by any artist, not just the Grateful Dead.

To get a better feel for their jam band style of improv, check out the medley from their live album Paris 1972, "China Cat Sunflower/I know You Rider." They always played those two songs together.

You rather resemble Jerry Garcia...who was the spiritual force behind the band, and their leader.

I love ripple. You have reviewed many slower songs and said you wanted some heat. Try Barton Hall live 77 again with the Scarlet Bagonia/Fire on the Mountain pair. The Dead had many songs that paired together. Another would be Chinacat Sunflower / I Know you Ryder from Eroupe 72 Album.
