    I’ve been playing guitar for 40 years. I know this and that about jazz... I decided to take the time to learn jazz for good. This guy knows what he is talking about and is a real teacher. I appreciate the quality of these video classes.

    To all the jerks who say they're bored because he doesn't play guitar...stop complaining and pay attention, he gives incredible bits of wisdom. Learn to delay gratification for a bit instead of being spoiled brats.

      That's the problem with a lot of people... they want to learn something as fast as possible but they don't take the time to LISTEN to someone...
      To bad, because i think you learn things much quicker if you do listen to people with experience!! :)

    • @YngtchieMusic

      It's one of the downsides to sites like TH-cam. It gives a lot of power to lazy people who can't comprehend legit good advice that can help their playing in the longer term. They most likely do a search, this video comes up, which is part of a whole series, and it doesn't enter their mind, not once, that the lack of actual guitar playing is on purpose.
      So, with their five-second attention spans, they give this very good video a downvote. And what a lot of downvotes often tell new viewers: there's something fishy about this video, and it can influence others if enough people vote it down. In this case, more than ten percent of all the votes are negative, which is insane.
      On a positive note, what are the chances that any of these ungrateful people will have the patience and dedication necessary to learn an actual jazz standard, not to mention several, and commit them to memory? I reckon those chances are slim at best.

    Glad to see you expanding your horizons with jazz. I hope younger kids catch on to your jazz teachings. Great advice to learning standards. All of your points hit the nail on the head. You talk about all the things a jazz player should do. Listen, learn, digest, and ultimately forget about it so you can just play.

  • @jazzerson7087
    @jazzerson7087 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Absolutely spot on. Especially with the vastness of it. The more you learn the more daunting it gets, not only a huge number of standards to learn but the different keys and feels. I'm sure Justin would agree with me on how difficult it is to become an *accomplished* jazz musician/guitarist. Just when you think you're getting good you'll hear like a Tal Farlow recording of You Stepped Out of a Dream or something and you start to wonder how on earth these players got so good. It's tough to get far in jazz without being put off by the sheer range of possibilies and abilities of some of the greats, the trick is to try to block it out and just focus on learning simple melodies first!

    Some great advice here! I'm trying to learn Cole Porter and Gershwin standards arranged by Durante....I can read music slowly but the timing and feeling is very dificult....they're not easy tunes. As Justin says, I've found on iTunes people playing their interpretations of these very arrangements, mad if you listen to other versions and vocalists you can adapt the song to your own style and preference. An excellent video. Thanks Justin. 👍

    I completely agree with listening to the vocalists. It is really nice because they don't really embellish the melody at all which helps a lot so you can hear the real melody and not be confused with the extra notes that aren't on the page.

I am stuck on the standard Caravan by Duke Ellington, Irving Mills and Juan Tizol until my instructor tells me I can move on to another standard.

      Hi David,
      If I understood this lesson, it probably doesn't matter which tune, as long as you like it. 'Cause when you get to Justin's later stages of learning (harmonic analysis, solo transcriptions and all the practice options), you could go on forever. So you might as well work on something you like.

    Hi justin, Great lesson and one that can be applied to all areas of music really.
    I see you mentioned sight reading, any chance you could do a lesson on the best way to approach learning to read as part of this series? I find it hard to read when there is no tab underneath with regard to which Note to play as there are so many different places to play one note. and also how can you decide on the fly if you want to truly learn to sight read so for instance just walking in and playing straight from a chart. and then I find with the tab it's difficult to focus on the fingering and the rhythm at the same time, also trying to find material at the right level and in the right format is a nightmare if you have any tips I think it would make a valuable lesson for anybody attempting to learn to read.
    Thanks for all your hard work

    • @greywolf271
      @greywolf271 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, this comes with experience. If you're having this problem, simple solution, play the guitar often and learn the fretboard positions. If you want to progress to the next level, play the guitar often. There is no other way, no magic methods.

    • @xgreenjacket
      @xgreenjacket 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply, I practise for around 4 hrs a day as I'm looking to be a serious musician but when it comes to reading music I'm at a loss on how to approach it, I know the fretboard positions, but really guitar music without tab seems to me to be geared towards classical guitar as standard guitar is so flexible and there are so many options to play one note. I guess some of it will come with time and practise like everything but kind of at a loss with how to approach it to start with,so I'm not trying to do too much or trying to learn to read in a way that is not as efficient or helpful

    • @greywolf271
      @greywolf271 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      jon carley I started teaching myself to play when I was about 13. Folks tell me I was lucky I started young, I don't believe that; Passion to learn something is what drives me, not age. All I did was practice from an instructional music book on guitar, a very old one at that. Pretty hard at first, especially with the old guitar I had. My experience over the years is that there is no right way when you start, that's something you discover over time. Nowdays, you have it much easier to access material, not so when I started. As for what positions to use, who cares; I look at the fretboard and I see creative constructs, not blindly following what someone else did. I don't know your level of music theory, but that's one area to build on to get yourself out of the pit of following manufactured music. Also the area where a teacher with a solid music background can assist. I'm lucky that I found one with a university music degree specializing in Jazz.

      Hey there, I see what you're saying... the cool thing is that on his website, he literally has like a whole series explaining more specific things like... one by one.
      I think what you should do (that's what I'm gonna do haha) is make a list of the things he said here and then looking up either how to do each one (in other videos) or go through his series on his website... or both! haha.
      Just trying to help... I think it'll be good :)
      Edit: If you look up "JA-001... JA-002... JA-003 etc... I think it's pretty much the walk through these things.
