Hi Russell, yesterday, as we left the Canberra Centre tea emporium, we speculated about your whereabouts and what you are doing. Then last night you pop up on our TH-cam menu. Great to see you are still here and that you are following your passion.
It is nice to know that my old customers still think of me. I am doing rather well in my career now. I'm a junior editor and working on developing this series into a tv show
I am new to Canberra and chanced upon your channel. This is really fascinating stuff. This already explains a lot of the big whats I have about Canberra and, lets say, interesting design.
Great video. I am about to move to Canberra and this has been very informative and may influence where I choose to live. Large bodies of water often divide a city. Growing up in Sydney, I was acutely aware of the division between the north and south sides of the harbour. For many years, they were treated as two separate cities until the Sydney Harbour Bridge was built but that mentality continues.
Thank you! And welcome to Canberra. Move to the Northside, it's way better than the south :P I have plenty more videos on Canberra’s history if you want to brush up on your bush capital knowledge as well.
I am glad you enjoyed it!! I have an entire back catalogue of Canberra videos ranging from the design competition to the history of our iconic bus stops. Plus, I will be doing more in 2025!
I moved to Canberra in 2006 and bought a new unit in Dunlop, because it was near my friends, and I had no bias as to location. I visited often in the 1970s and stayed with family friends in Narrabundah. So, I have NO preference over north vs south. When I first moved here, my then accountant (in the St George building) asked why I lived on the northside, as if it were a bad thing! I know people from all over Canberra, and EVERY area has its advantages and attractions. I cannot understand the parochial north vs south divide. When I worked at FAHCSIA in Greenway and DHS in Homeworld, I frequented the Hyperdome, and found everything I needed there. I love Canberra and am happy to travel to whatever event interests me, regardless of location. In any case, it is so much easier (and quicker) to drive from one town centre to another than (say) Melbourne, or (God forbid) Sydney. A total NON issue, IMHO.
Speaking of the lentil belt, is it just me or is there a utilitarian streak on Mort Street that actively rejects the vegan identity of Lonsdale Street? If not, how can we morties create one? ;-)
I ride down Mort St. every morning. It certainly has a different vibe compared to Lonsdale St. I personally think we should remove cars from Lonsdale St
Griffin really only had a year to oversee limited development. Two world wars and the Great Depression really slowed things down. Modern Canberra, particularly the suburbs are down to John Overall and the NCDC.
@@TheAdventuresofRussell I’ll have a look. My experience suggests Canberra is getting over roundabouts. I had a driving trip in the UK a couple of years ago. They love them and leave Canberra in the dust.
In doing research for this video, I found that Southsiders were more likely to move about the city than Northsiders. Cool content by the way. Might be cool to collaborate sometime!
@@RentonBrax it is out the front of the National Capital Exhibition Centre. If you visit the Canberra region information centre you will see it on the way in
On the South side we have mountains everyone has a great view. On the North side If the person across the road has a good house you have a good view... Flat landers.
Odd, the ACT Government is actually filling in LGB now and lining it with tower blocks facing south into the cold winter winds and west into the fierce setting sun. Then propping it up with an eyewatering, expensive and disruptive tiny addition to the Light Rail. But this island of high rise delight is still cut off from the city by the Valley of Death aka the Parkes Way freeway.

Welcome to Canberra! It truly is a city like no other. It isn't perfect, but I do feel it reflects Australia well.

There is no division. It’s a mirage. Be excellent to each other and party on dudes. 😀🖖

Excellent vid. Thanks. Will be sharing.
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it so much that you wanted to share it!
This is actually great! Thank you.
Thank you!! It is something not many people think too deeply about lol
This was so great! More Canberra video essays pls

Thanks Damien! Have you seen my Roundabout Video?

Canberra is very easy to drive. I am glad you make the most of this wonderful city of ours

Mort Street, now if that wasn't a name that has encapsulated its fate.

Yes, they have a lot to answer for. Have you seen my roundabout video?

I am a southsider however I much prefer the northsides layout and would live their if my work didn't require me to live in the south.

The older Inner north suburbs best demonstrate what WBG planned. They were the real Garden City design.
Where is that Map at 0:41?

ready for a full camera stare while driving Russell
Ha ha ha I didn't want to drive off the edge of Red Hill lol

Northside is plenty hilly. They are built in the valleys as well
Lake B-G should be widened by 1.2m.
That is very specific. Why that much? Would you want it shaped into the round basins Griffin designed?
@@TheAdventuresofRussell I was joking.

If you're not living in Sydney, you're Canberra, I mean camping.
Sydney is cute and all, but it isn’t the National Capital and for good reason lol
Your thumbnail looks like a game of pickup sticks
A bundle of sticks can be rather strong when held together.
Becoz the Northside is so much more awesomer than the Southside.
Correct lol
Good thing no-one lives in Canberra
