It was a French financed film directed by Marcel Camus and set in Brazil. That is why the Oscar went to France.

A collaboration of France and Brazil. Hope there are more of these. Hope there would be an official entry from Brazil for Best Foreign Language Film

Eis o resultado.

Wow they even added subtitles!! Now if only the Academy knew of that film's classic score at the time....the orchestra could've played Mahana de Carnival.

Made for then awarded to then.

Would love to see Jan Kadar get the Oscar for The Shop on Main Street in 1966. Is that possible?

there it is, a defeat that Brazilians will never overcome. Brazilians defeated by the lack of funding from the Brazilian government in the cinema itself

please consider: that year India submitted "Apur Sansar". It is one of the greatest films ever made. You have also preserved this film 50 years later. But it didn't even get a nomination during its time. . Is it not a total fallacy that "Apu Triology" remained totally unnoticed & unrecognised in Academy award? please answer.

Yes. It is. Maybe a documentary about Satyajit Ray would win Best Documentary Feature and it would be the win they deserved. And that is in Bengali
