Still amazed at his song writing skills.. the chord progression in this song is incredible, and super complex. This was one of the first songs that I truly challenged myself with learning on guitar.. had to learn all about stretch chords.
Can't stop listening to this song ever since I found it. John Mayer and his guitar, quietly singing away is a different level of magic. The sound quality is amazing!
This song is beautiful. I don't know which version I like more. I simply adore the intimacy of this one but I also admire the album version's arrangement. Oh well, both are on my phone anyway.
Its amazing how relational memory works. I used to play this version of St Patricks day on repeat for a few months back in 2021, when I was talking to a girl that i was very misguidedly infatuated with. Just hearing this takes me back to the feelings of frustration, confusion, and sadness that I was awash with, during those months. This song's theme of time passing by without progress, closure and helplessness, spoke to me so much.
😂😂crazy bro I’m in the exact same boat. When you said “misguided feeling” I felt the accuracy. I fell in love with who I THOUGHT she was. I don’t want to be with her, but man thinking about the situation pisses me off.
@@ilovejesus1014 enough time has passed by that I am now actually relieved that I dodged a bullet with that girl lol. Exactly like you, I built up an image of what i wanted her to be, she was anything but. But hey, live and learn!
Yeah, he seems to have deviated from his personal complex music theory style to appeal more to the public. It's something he's learned after being in the music business for so long. He has it figured out right but the older fans like us miss this stuff. I know I do.
These songs also require you to be in an insanely focused headspace. Its almost like once you grow out of it its tough to get back. But at the same time Sob Rock is his best album since room for squares or heavier things.
@@cmt8485 he literally left Columbia records to do his own thing - pretty sure he's big enough where he doesn't have to answer calls to so-called stakeholders anymore. Not saying what you are saying isn't true in general - I'm sure it happens to artists who get super big with a specific circumstances - JM just doesn't fit that bill imo.
Here comes the cold Break out the winter clothes And find a love to call your own You, enter you Your cheeks a shade of pink And the rest of you in powder blue Who knows what will be But I'll make you this guarantee No way November will see our goodbye When it comes to December it's obvious why No one wants to be alone at Christmas time In the dark, on the phone You tell me the names of your brothers And your favorite colors I'm learning you And when it snows again We'll take a walk outside And search the sky Like children do No way November will see our goodbye When it comes to December it's obvious why No one wants to be alone at Christmas time And come January, we're frozen inside Making new resolutions a hundred times February, won't you be my valentine? And we'll both be safe 'til St. Patrrick's Day We should take a ride tonight around the town And look around at all the beautiful houses Something in the way that blue lights on a black night Can make you feel more Everybody, it seems to me, just wants to be Just like you and me No one wants to be alone at Christmas time Come January, we're frozen inside Making new resolutions a hundred times February, won't you be my valentine? And if our always is all that we gave And we someday take that away I'll be alright, if it was just 'til St. Patrick's Day
I was simply using poetic license. I do know what a chord is, and I have learned how to play the song. I was just saying its one of the more difficult songs. Thanks for being so well mannered.
I really like this version but the long note at the start of the last chorus in the album version is just the ultimate orgasmic climax to the song and this one doesn't have that, sorry guys :P
@BluesMastery I kinda like it that way tho ya know. its like a special gift for all the true fans that spend countless hours finding every piece of music he has ever written lol. I kinda see it that way
@JunBlues77 True. I've since learned how to play it, hah. But it took a while. Even though it's so many chords, the way they meld into one another makes it a seamless song to play. This guy not only wrote good music, but his chords were amazing.
I appreciate the way he sang here. Wish they just retook the same thing for Room for Squares or just give us an alternate version for the newer albums. Maybe the only thing worse in this version are the final few lines which really made an impact in the RFS version.
I respect this version a bit more. Hum picking the notes instead of strumming allows more sentiment to be released from the guitar to accompany his voice in the song
I dont think so. Except for a few songs, I enjoy mayer's strumming a lot in room for squares, they fit their chords perfectly. Picking it's cool and all, but the "pacing" (i dont really know if that's the right word here) the studio version has sounds a lot better for me, like the lyrics belong to it.
i'm in love with this version, i can't stop listening to it, but i can't find any way to download it! i would appreciate it greatly if you could give me a way to download this!
You have a point actually. Many of these chords are similar to the progression/chords of No Such Thing but I wrote that years ago, when I was just learning guitar. Needless to say, I was very impressed ha.
Man the guy has matured a lot - hate it hahaha. No but i always consider Room For Squares, and even this early stuff, to be his greatest! It has like 36 chords or something, but it's put together so well, absolutely love it
Hi, is there any chance you could send me the mp3 of this? I much prefer it to the original. I'll send you a message with my email address if that's okay :)
man, enough with the "music these days are pathetic" statements. sure, i don't enjoy most of the pop/radio songs of today, but i've heard the pop/radio music in previous era and frankly they weren't that good neither. but there are plenty of notable great music in the past, just like john mayer. let's say 80's, in my opinion, dan fogelberg is john mayer whilst mc hammer is lil wayne. i can go on but it'd just take up my letters. stop being those pretentious jackasses who complains about pop msic
This song deserves mad respect. Its got more chords than all his other songs combined.
How did he play this? Amazing.
Still amazed at his song writing skills.. the chord progression in this song is incredible, and super complex. This was one of the first songs that I truly challenged myself with learning on guitar.. had to learn all about stretch chords.
this song - 30 chords
It’s actually 41 no joke

Still listening to this in 2023...always around fall and winter. Timeless song.
This is just an excellent demo. Imagine you're a record exec hearing this for the first time. Wow.
I've never liked playing this song live, but this is a great way of doing it... cant believe I never thought of it!
Seriously. Got a little teary eyed. Holy Moly.
I wonder how he managed to compose this song.. man.
Heartbreak or Drugs I’m guessing
john mayer at his best, i loved the circa 2002-3 time. he is still so awesome and different now
Here comes the cold
Break out the winter clothes
And find a love to call your own
You, enter you
Your cheeks a shade of pink
And the rest of you in powder blue
Who knows what will be
But I'll make you this guarantee
No way November will see our goodbye
When it comes to December it's obvious why
No one wants to be alone at Christmas time
In the dark, on the phone
You tell me the names of your brothers
And your favorite colors
I'm learning you
And when it snows again
We'll take a walk outside
And search the sky
Like children do
No way November will see our goodbye
When it comes to December it's obvious why
No one wants to be alone at Christmas time
And come January, we're frozen inside
Making new resolutions a hundred times
February, won't you be my valentine?
And we'll both be safe 'til St. Patrrick's Day
We should take a ride tonight around the town
And look around at all the beautiful houses
Something in the way that blue lights on a black night
Can make you feel more
Everybody, it seems to me, just wants to be
Just like you and me
No one wants to be alone at Christmas time
Come January, we're frozen inside
Making new resolutions a hundred times
February, won't you be my valentine?
And if our always is all that we gave
And we someday take that away
I'll be alright, if it was just 'til St. Patrick's Day
