Why Did The White Walkers Allow Certain Characters To Live? - Game of Thrones Season 8 (End Game)

  • Welcome back for another Game of Thrones Season 8 End Game Theories Video. Today I am answering a few more questions some of you left me. The main question is why did the White Walker allow Samwell Tarly to live? After Sam found the Dragonglass at the Fist of the First Men he was forced to hide from The Others. He was eventually surrounded by the Night King's men, but Sam was let go at the time. Why? Is there something special about Samwell? Does he have a bigger role to play for the Night King? I also discuss Jon and Dany's relationship, and the possibility of Daenerys being pregnant. Will she produce a Targaryen Heir, or will Jon have the baby legitimized as a Stark to save their house? Let me know your opinions on these topics. Thanks for watching!

If you read about the doomed Franklin Expedition and other failed and successful arctic expeditions, the frozen seas were factors and planned for. I do however have a question. Westeros is steep with folklore, history, and traditions...why has no one ever heard of the Three Eyed Raven. Every one Bran told looked at him as if the concept of the Three eyed Raven was a foreign to them.

Heres a theory for you. Something ive been pondering since the hold the door episode. What if the night king wins and Bran has to go back in time since he sees all time simultaneously and change the past in order to prevent the night king from existing etc. Since we have now seen a couple times that bran can affect history even in the future.

the night king does have the sight, as he is a the result of Bran's consciousness being trapped inside the body of the night king as he was worgged into the human that became the night king as the children created him.

I think the white Walker let Sam live and they would know something is of meaning if they just let Sam live. We the whole army there is no way to just try to kill him and let him live. That's why they waited and then tried to "kill" sam so he could spread the word and continue to do what he will do.

I know I'm late to the party, but I'm going to toss my two cents in.
I've noticed that the White Walkers don't kill people who submit. In Episode 1, the two members of the Night's Watch are killed, but the third drops to his knees (in submission).
When Sam see's the White Walker, he's sitting down. He makes eye contact, and then puts his head down (again in submission.)
When Sam sees the White Walker attacking Gilly, Sam is no longer submissive.
Maybe the White Walkers spare those who kneel, or submit to them. We have to remember, Craster was able to make a deal with them. He gave them his sons, in exchange for safety.
Maybe the WW need humans to survive, or at least, to repopulate. It would make sense as to why they only leave the submissive ones alive.

Shane Slone The theory is that Bran will warg into one of the first men and try and convince the children not to create the walkers but they use him to create the night king (so bran wargs into the dude in the flashback thing when they created the NK). The theory also says bc of this bran will get lost and forget who he is like jorjen and the 3 eyed raven have warned him about.
It doesn’t make a heap of sense and I doubt they would spend the last season looking into weird time travel specificities so it’s a pretty dead end theory

You mentioned the way the bodies were displayed by the night king. When you see the night king made by the children of the forest , I’m pretty sure there is an aerial shot that shows stones in the same swirl pattern as the bodies shown in this video. So maybe it is a connection to the magic used by the children of the forest? Maybe a ritual of some sort that gives or strengthens the night kings power over the dead?

Sam has the Horn that was found with the Dragon glass. This horn was used to defeat the Knight King... Sam will learn how the horn works. As Jon thought it was broke. It's not. It will raise the dead Stark's in the Tomb. Holding their iron swords ready for battle. It could raise the dead dragons of past. As the Castle Winterfell is build of magic of old. The closer they get to it. The more powerful the magic is. And Dragons are all about Magic...

Maybe the night king is pushing his way through Westeros in any way possible to get to the Godseye, only to unmake himself just as the Children made him, so he can find peace? I’ve always thought of the pain in the night kings eyes when they plunged the dragon glass In his heart and wondered how much pain that put him in afterward too.

Dan I am sending this question to you, Gray Area, & Alt-Shift X)
I would deeply appreciate your thoughts on the following questions:
I read the books several years ago and when the HBO series began I was quite happy with it especially seasons one and two but as the seasons has gone on and the writers have run out of material from George the show has suffered and it’s very unfortunate.
Some of the best episodes are the ones that were written by George himself (I’m sure you’re very familiar with each of them and they’re still a delight to watch mostly for all the important clues that he manages to share, despite the fact that his scripts had to be cut down quite a lot.
I apologize for digressing so much.
What I would appreciate hearing your thoughts and advice on actually deal with the Prologue and A couple of major differences from the show and the prologue which we find in George’s first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series.
So much of the recent Output and discussions from the Fanbase deal with how the show is going to end...
After all it’s been seven long years & there’s an awful lot of loose ends that need to be tied up. How they’re going to accomplish this Consumes a great deal of discussion among the fans as you well know.
(I’m sorry it’s taking me so long to get to the point, I suffered a massive stroke a few years back and I am very lucky that I am able to communicate at all. But it takes me so much longer then it ever did before the stroke so please accept my apologies.)
There two specific items From the prologue in the show that I wanted to ask your advice and thoughts are the following:
The first: Is the pretty wildling girl who is first seen by the Ranger Will, She is lifted several feet off the ground and she is impaled upon the trunk of a tree. However other than the large branch extending out from her midsection she is completely intact and I think it is of some great significance that the walkers chose this individual. Possibly they saw her and that is why they attacked the entire party of Free Folk.
The girl is very pretty, with long blonde hair and (normal ) blue eyes when the Ranger from the Night’s Watch first sees her. I think it’s significant that in the seven seasons since, they haven’t shown us wildling women or girls with long luxurious blonde curls and large blue eyes. (of course her eyes turn the abnormal piercing blue color when the Ranger sees her standing on the forest floor and she turns to look at him. After she had clearly been transformed into a wight. (Or a Walker?)
They made a point to focus on her closely in several shots during the prologue. This leads me to think that what she looks like is meant to send us a message as to what the white walkers are looking for.
Unlike the rest at her family (?) they did not chop her up into bits and use her body parts to create figure ( circular with a line bisecting it)
Very close to a figure which we saw repeated six seasons later. It was among the “ancient” drawings which workmen found in the caves beneath Dragonstone (as they were mining for dragon glass) And John made certain to show this to Daenerys.
Question # 2 when this image was first shown the consensus was that it’s a depiction of the Gods Eye on the Isle of Faces. (With the theory that if there any Children of the Forest still in existence, this is where they reside)
Leading to discussions that this might be the site of very important battle or a critical battle of the mind between Bran and the Night King of the show.
However recently watching that prologue segment again: I noticed that the walkers took the time to impale six heads on branches and that made me wonder, is this a depiction of the isle of faces or could it possibly be Winterfell?
The reason this thought popped into my head is because at the start of every show when they show us Winterfell from a Birdseye view there are six towers and there are strong battlement walls that encircle the entirety of Winterfell which could also account for the body parts in the circular shape.
Of course I realize all this could be wrong.
However, they made such an effort to ensure that we saw the girl and we saw that figure made by the bodies... is it because this girl might be the closest individual that they could find that may look like the Night King’s Queen who may be in the Winterfell Crypts (another idea out there that’s quite popular with many fans.)
I wonder what your thoughts are.
Thank you for all the hard work that you put into all of your videos. I enjoy them tremendously and I am a huge fan.
I really look forward to reading your thoughts.
    Cheers! Maddie
PS. again, apologies for the length of this message... I still need a lot of help in speech therapy, it’s such a slow process and it’s frustrating and so embarrassing because I know what I want to say inside my head but it comes out like a jumble thank you for your patience.

actually I was just thinking about this for the first time as I was watching this video, the whole Jon/Dany incest thing. Yes, they'll both find out the truth in season 8 and yes, obviously it's going to majorly throw them at first. But the more I considered it, at the very least this is a RARE case of incest in Westeros where both parties had no clue of their blood connection previously. They seemed to naturally fall in love on their own. Pretty much every other case of incest I've heard about in this universe, each partner was well aware. So, I don't know, maybe that can count for something. like ultimately it wouldn't be THAT crazy if they decided they still wanted to be together. and that, well all things considered for just "how things were" in a medieval time like this, aunt/nephew wouldn't feel quite as icky as brother/sister.

The Night King is the most powerful character in the show. I whole heartedly believe he is some sort of green seer. As you mentioned, he knew Bran would be at the cave. He also knew when Bran was using crows to spy on him. I just wonder tho, if the Night King only got his powers after he was turned by the Children of the Forest or if he was legit as a human.

    • @jfacts49

I think the reason they've been spared is because they showed they were afraid, and cowered in fear. I think this entire thing will have to do with balance. Magic is coming back full force, and that could be the reason they're marching on Westeros. We know that a peace was brokered at some point, so that means another one could be put in place. I think bending the knee to the Night King (cowering) probably allows you to live. Those who do not yield always get consumed by the army. Wildlings are all warriors for the most part, so we havent seen the army of the dead actually kill ''innocent, unarmed people'', so...that being said, i think it is all about balance.

I think Sam was actually left alive by the Walkers willfully and that is why he is telling the story of Game of Thrones to someone. In my view it is background story of GoT which Sam is tellign in detail to somebody. And if it so, this is bad. Which means it is all from the point of view of Sam? However lets wait for Season 8 to find it out.

I have always wondered why the White Walkers and Night King let some people live, and I think there is a reason. Also, I’ve always thought that since The Night King marked Bran, he could’ve done worse, and the physical contact while in a dream means he has Green Sight too. He may’ve marked Bran just to track him. Finally, I think the symbols do have meanings that will be revealed. If not, it’s quite a let down.

I think this is a moment where the Others are given more thought than needed. I thought they acted just as any soldiers would have. They seemed to be sticking to a greater tactics and only dealing with threats as needed. If you recall, the ranger, Sam and Craster's Family, had all displayed a surrender of sorts. Hardhome was in part a summit focused on the Others destruction. Let's be honest. There were alot more people the Others let be than mentioned here. I think it would be more interesting to figure out what the white army was doing all this time. Sam sees them marching near the fist. Just a valley away, is the wildling army. A week or two away, is Castle Black. So close, yet it's many years until anything major happens. Would seem strange to crazy if the white hoard were watching mance rayder attacking the wall. They were after all, in the neighborhood.. : )

It seems those who are spared by the White Walkers are those who don't fight - don't attack, and are not perceived by the White Walkers as a threat to themselves or their mission. They didn't attack Sam in the first scene because he was alone - and cowering. No threat at all. It is true the wight attacked Sam in the next scene to bring on Ghost and show how direwolves and wights interact. Also the first time, it was a White Walker that made a choice not to attack Sam. Later it was a wight - which don't seem to possess any real free will, or ability to make decisions. Also, we hadn't seen them yet, but there was a company of Black just beyond Sams sight in the blowing snow. Which is a good reason - if you are a wight to go after anything living.
So it seems there is a distinction between meeting White Walkers and meeting Wights. Walkers can choose not to kill you if you are not in their way.. Wights seem to be the mindless soldiers who just attack anything living unless ordered not to. Also it appears that the Walkers have a mission or goal, and while they will kill any who stand in their way, they don't want to be distracted by those who mean no harm. Giving credence to the idea that they may be incredibly dangerous, they are not simple evil destroyers. We can't understand their goal until we get more info. It must remain a mystery until after the Norths main forces have failed to stop the advance in Episode 3, somewhere between 3 and 5 I think is when the big twist will be revealed and find out what the motivations are. Then we will learn with our heroes how to end the War for the dawn without brute force.

    • @TalkingThrones
      @TalkingThrones  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Some good points.. In the books the Wights are a little different. They do retain some of their memories from their past lives, which is why the Wight went for Lord Commander Mormont. It seems they do have some control over their actions, whereas in the show, it's not as clear..

    • @maverickassasin1514
      @maverickassasin1514 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Talking Thrones At this point it is blatantly obvious that wights are nothing but WW warged into dead bodies. Kill the warg and the Wight is finished. WW leaving a human alone is a typical thing shows do to leave audience on their edge of the seat. I don't remember a single WW/Wight leaving a human alone in the books.

I still think Sam wasn't directly scene by that white walker since he was hiding behind a rock, but, sensed him. Instead of dealing with him himself the white walker just sent one of his henchmen.
The camera angle just made it look like they were in direct eye contact for added effect.
On to your other point, If Sansa or Arya survives Jon doesn't have to name his child a Stark, regardless of wether they're sexually active or not. It makes more sense to give the Targaryen name since there's only two of them left rather than the Stark name who have four members. I like to think it'd be implied that Arya and Gendry get together or something. Or Sansa decides to have a child to further the bloodline. Or Bran, even though he is the three eyed Raven could survive to become tree man like his predecessor and keep the Stark name alive for decades. If the Starks do go extinct, the North would just follow the Targaryens, Jon's kids would still be accepted as Starks, or at least from the same bloodline. I really don't see the issue.

Why is it only one? why wasnt it with the army going in the same direction? what if the night king wasnt controlling that one and someone else was? my eyes might have been playing tricks on me but thinking about it i dont remember its eyes being blue. what if someone else was controlling it kind of like a Bran/Hodor incident. i'm not saying it would be Bran from the future but there is still so much we dont know about magic in Westeros
