@@LuekReviews They kept dropping references to the first season as to keep viewers coming back for more bullshit episodes. But after episode 2 or 3... It just made me want to rewatch the first season...again. Night Country is horrible. And no, it's NOT because I am white; it's not because I'm a male in my 30's making this statement. Night Country is just horrible because of the lack of vision and writing talent. It is what it is, Issa. You aren't as talented as you like to believe. And it's not the "30yr old, white male's" fault. Projecting her own insecurities and personal issues through this television show that people looked forward to watching. Only to be severely disappointed and then ridiculed for their honest opinions that all seem to be saying the same thing.(For the most part.) To be made to feel like it's my fault I don't like the show because I'm an adult white male in my 30's... Laughable. This season was absolute trash. True Bullshit. I'm glad you made this video. You did an awesome job summing it up without getting dragged into a political rant because that could have been very easy to do and you were exactly right on EVERYTHING you pointed out.

The problem as I see does not lie on whether we "like" or do "not like" the characters. The problem is that they are not interesting and feel flat overall. In season 1 of True Detective Marty was not a very likeable character (especially during the first half of season 1) but it was interesting. The ironic thing about this season is that despite "female empowerment" the real True Detective is Prior, the young white police officer, instead of the two leading characters.

    • @LuekReviews
      @LuekReviews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I agree completely. I always say if you're not going to make characters likeable, at least make them interesting. There's like a thousand great anti-heroes that illustrate this. And yeah, I'm not sure how it became empowering just to cast women without writing good characters for them. And then critics are accused of being sexist and not liking the characters because they're women rather than because they're weakly written. Gender and storytelling has been reduced down to, "If the characters are women they're good." It's to the point where it's hard to even have a conversation about storytelling because people are so focused on what's between the main characters' legs.

Woke writers/producers for the past decade have been destroying beloved franchises with pathetic self-insert power fantasies. This season doesn’t even remotely feel like true detective. Another TH-camr - Motion in Art - makes some great points too. IMO, there was way more character development even in seasons 2 & 3, which I came to appreciate more after my first viewing. We never do get the philosophical dialogue after S1, but at least the characters have relationships, and we get to know their stories. There were so many opportunities for this to be good, which makes it even more disappointing. Why not emphasize women’s intuition? Especially when you have an indigenous woman - Navarro could have been spitting some shamanic words of wisdom throughout the show - instead we get this forced inauthentic dialogue. As a woman, I also feel like women would be talking way more than even Rust and Marty, collaborating more, and over analyzing everything - not failing to investigate basically everything and allowing a man to do all the work instead. This creator made exactly what Pizzolato said he would refuse to make - CSI: Alaska. (Except, he said Louisiana.)

    • @LuekReviews
      @LuekReviews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Santinogabriel10 Somehow, people view this show as "empowering" because two women are the leads. But they don't actually lead anything. They're incompetent, and the sidekick man gets far more done. They're just cheap stand-ins that don't actually demonstrate any of the qualities of strong women. I guess it's far easier to accuse critics of sexism or ignorance than it is to write strong characters.

    • @LuekReviews
      @LuekReviews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I agree that an actor's screen presence is somewhat indicative of their talent, but literally all of the acting in the show is bad, and Jodie Foster's been great in other things like Silence of the Lambs. I think, if anything, the show proves how important good direction is to an actor's performance. The director guides them on how to deliver lines and chooses which takes are the best. If I were to judge Jodie Foster's acting by anything, it wouldn't be Night Country.

@@LuekReviews My ex tricked me into watching Rise Of Skywalker. She said "it resolves everything wrong with TLJ and fixes everything you hated".
      It doesn't.
The only uncertainty is whether she deliberately stitched me up or whether she just isn't Star Wars enough to get it.
We're both 51 so old enough to remember seeing the first Star Wars at the cinema.
How much do I love Star Wars... as a kid, I use to have Shreddies for breakfast EVERY day. Not because I enjoyed Shreddies, I thought they were disgusting. I would gag while I ate them but if you collected the tokens on the boxes, you could get Star Wars stuff.
So my ex, did claim she loved Star Wars and the band, New Order.
Weeks into the relationship I asked which was her favourite New Order album. She said "The Best Of" and part of me died.
STOP READING NOW if you haven't seen Mandalorian season 2.
      Spoiler Ahead....
Ok. She claimed she LOVED Star Wars remember.
After I saw the final episode of season 2, I literally couldn't sit down. Despite the fact that she was no longer my gf, I phoned her and insisted that she watch it....while i remained on the line.
Yeah I know. I'm weird but I knew she wouldnt watch it otherwise.
So the X-Wing lands and the cloaked figure ignites a green lightsaber.
I say "Can you believe it".
She says "Who is it? Darth Vader"?
      Another part of me died.
Just... I dunno if you saw Rebels? But Thrawn was a mastermind, two steps ahead of everyone else.
Yet in "Ahsoka", they un-deliberately made him into a bungling buffoon, outwitted every time.
They literally destroyed the whole Ghost crew in Ahsoka.
      Chopper - Did nothing
      Zeb - Wasn't in it
Hera - Made her clumsy and smug
Kanan - I don't remember him being mentioned
Ezra - Stood about smiling with some tortoises, made no mention of Thrawn or how he escaped
Sabine - They made her dislikable, annoying, reckless, stupid.... oh and a jedi!!!!!!!
      Then there's Mandalorian season 3....
Guess what.... Grogu's back! But if you missed Book Of Boba Fett, you wouldnt know Grogu was back. Coz.... THERE he is.
They made Mando less..... everything in favour of Bo Katan.
They had Jack Black in one (pointless) episode and most of season 3 was terrible.
Kenobi - OK. I liked parts of Kenobi. There were some boring, silly, badly written episodes and they shat all over a New Hope by including Leia in it but there were 2 incredible scenes.
The first was when he sees Vader for the first time. Not the first confrontation but the scene where he is hiding and sees him. I felt the shock and fear he was going through. That isn't meant sarcastically. I know the show gets hate but I appreciated that scene.
Then obviously, the fight at the end. They stole the split mask from Rebels but.... (I know I risk looking a fool now) honestly.... I cried during that scene. It's an Anakin thing.
      I've written too much.

Overall very underwhelming ending due to the following reasons:
    1. Annie, the midwife, with no formal scientific education, figuring out the top scientistic project details based on some documents.
    2. She destroys years of research as if those scientific and valuable documents are not electronically saved on hard drive, cloud or some other digital format !!!!
    3. She gets murdered by a group of top world class scientists with PHDs in their fields like they are professional killers.
    4. A cleaning lady spills water exactly by the underground hatch opening and gets her other cleaning ladies involved and somehow they put the whole murder case together like professional detectives.
    5. The cleaning ladies outsmart the scientists, and this expensive lab that’s owned by powerful and ultra wealthy Tuttle family, does not have one armed security guard!
    6. The entire world and millions of cancer patients did not get to use this incredible medical breakthrough drug because of some small town in middle of nowhere wanted to have clean water. Move those hundred people to a new town maybe?
    7. The overall story arch was very man hating. All the heroes were women and all the evil doers were men. A feminist extravaganza!
    8. What was the deal with the polar bear? Was there a spirit involved? The show did not explain half the weird stuff. This was very much like the show “Lost” where the creators did not explain anything and left us fuming at the end.

the worst thing ever made. had such potential too
its obvious how this happened (diversity quotas). every single choice was a mistake. the names, the music, the quotes, the allusions to s1 and other thrillers without any meaning or reverence or understanding of the source, the resentful man-hate/white-hate, the indigenous plot (which is fine, i loved wind river) but to make that the central focus here along with "women good, men bad) is unreal, the dialogue is just atrocious in every aspect
the scenery and setting, even the cinematography is perfect. i just cant imagine why they let this happen

I agree with your review completely and appreciate your work in making it for us. Subscription earned!
That said, I feel your criticism is strongest when discussing the whys and hows - the meat of the story or utter lack thereof. The snark, on the other hand, is distracting. There are real reasons this show sucks so bad. It’s insulting, not scary, terrible writing, etc. You touch on those and more. But it’s no laughing matter. I mean, yeah, sometimes things suck so bad they’re laughable, but this show sucks so bad it deserves serious treatment as the tripe it is. That way, your criticism will be taken more seriously and maybe some creator(s) will learn something about what not to do.
As an aside, I find myself wondering whether cast and crew of this crap show were more focused on partying in Iceland during production and less focused on making great art/entertainment. Did they figure it’ll work out in post? I wonder if at least some of Danvers’ sourpuss grimace reflects Foster’s thinking “oh shit this is not going to be good.” I wonder how much she got paid - never a good thing for an audience member to consider when watching a show.
Looking forward to watching the rest of your stuff on this!

    at the very end...
I have a question about that video confession (on Navarro"s cell phone) that they said Navarro got from Raymond Clark.(the leaked video)
When could she have recorded it?
In the video he looked cleaned up,
very coherent & not crazy at all.
In E6 from the first contact, Danvers
    & Navarro had with Clark...
until he died...he looked crazy, filthy.
Then he was bloodied & messed up when they were interrogating him.
When/how? could he have been recorded confessing what the scientists/mine were doing??
    I'm confused.

Thanks dude, I was already hesitant to watch; but the red flag for me was that my mom recommended this nonsense - '... well written female characters, it's like Seven, etc.'' - without ever having watched season 1 of TD, or Fargo season 1. Fargo season 1 had one of my favorite examples of a well written and thoroughly believable female cops, besides the rest of the cast also killing it.
The loop of the one girl dropping food and screaming already makes me not wanna watch too; I already know I don't care about her drama and it looks over indulgent/ ham fisted.

  • @fabiotn2008
    @fabiotn2008 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Bravo!!! The series is facing a common problem in contemporary audiovisual production: the attempt to fit issues of representation in a forced manner, at the expense of narrative quality. While acknowledging the importance of addressing women's representation in a more inclusive and complex way, the season in question seems to fall into a trap by prioritizing an agenda over artistic competence. By giving space to female directors and screenwriters, in pursuit of historical reparation, the series ends up sacrificing the quality of the final product. An example of this is the choice of Issa López to direct and write the season, resulting in work below expectations compared to previous seasons under Nic Pizzolatto's guidance. The attempt to explore the female universe and its complexities, without resorting to objectification and hypersexualization, is commendable but insufficient to compensate for deficiencies in execution. The predominance of a female production team, while a step in the right direction, does not automatically guarantee artistic excellence. Instead of promoting genuine diversity of perspectives, this approach risks turning meaningful works into mere vehicles for identity agendas, resulting in empty and uninteresting narratives.

its intro theme tells you everything you need to know
and for the record, i loved Wind River, which is about a female protagonist solving the case of an indigenous dead girl. I liked Yellowjackets s1 (not great but very good). I am a greta gerwig fan and many of my favorite musical artists (delia derbyshire, eliane radigue, beatriz ferreyra) are female. I do love season 1, but i dont expect anything near it
that being said, i also dont expect someone to crowbar season one tropes and themes into their piece of garbage show to try and make it more like season 1 without any understanding of the original series. it is mind boggling that this happened, and even more mind numbing that it just got picked up for a fifth season with the same incompetent director
the new cope, ever since amy schumer's leather special got netflix to take away its rating system is to just blame "right wing trolls"/men for bad reviews, which is such a transparent cop out. unfortunately it seems that people fall for it. i just cant believe theres not more outrage. i suppose this is all so predictable now its not even worth arguing about
putting an angsty pre-teen nu-metal wigger billy eilish song in the intro and a female boxer with dimple piercings as a detective is so insane to me, but its a perfect illustration of the mindset at work here
