  • In this little village Buizingen, near Brussels, Belgium, you will find this little organ standing in the choir of the Sint-Vincentius church. This one manual organ has been built in 1808 by Van Peteghem and brought back to life in 2019 by the Dutch organ builder Verschueren. Your servant acted here as consultant for this restoration.
    !!You'll find the list of Stops I used below!!
    Pachelbel (1653-1706) might seem to be a little bit too early for an instrument built in 1808. Partly that's true of course though the Van Peteghems (which worked for generations) were rather conservative in the way they built organs. And so, what you hear in this recording could very well be built half a century earlier. And more importantly, this music simply sounds fantastic here.
    It was a pleasure to work with that cold winter-day (12°C in the church!) with:
    *Johan Zoutendijk, director of Verschueren Orgelbouw
    *Hans van der Gouwe, VDGRecords and partner
    *Hubert Sergeant, member of the church council Sint-Vincentius and a fighter for this organ since many many years.

    In a past life, I worked briefly for an organ builder, mostly handling repairs and tuning as an apprentice. While I was fascinated by all organs, the most interesting ones were the small tracker instruments that were built to last centuries if properly maintained. To see the workings of this venerable instrument is a real pleasure, almost as much a pleasure as listening to your performance, which is sublime. Thank you very much for posting this performance.

    Does anybody else recognize Buxtehude’s Ciacona in E Minor (BuxWV 160) in that main theme? It makes the communication between artists of this period in time so evident, same as the relationship between Bach and Buxtehude. The greats borrowed from the greats, inspiring the best. What a time it was for music.

      It's interesting in Baroque music to note that this descending is a fairly common motif (Pachelbel, Biber, Lully, Buxtehude).

    Everytime I see one of your videos, I think of organ music. Especially Bach's organ music seemed to me always to be played far to fast. The notes blur into each other easily in fast passages, and what you get is a very muddy sound, very hard for the listener to distinguish the pitches, and understand what's going on. A much much slower tempo seems so much more musically and makes so much more sense to me.

    • @송제슨
      @송제슨 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      That's always the crazy thing to me about people who are obsessed with historically informed performance with organ music; they're obsessed with baroque organs because of how clear and articulate they are, but when it comes to playing Bach they always seem to want to rush it in a way that makes the beautiful harmony and counterpoint impossible to really hear.

    • @bvsiness
      @bvsiness 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This comes. Organists where playing too fast because they had no idea about expressivity. But with some studies, we know Bach was to be articulated in a differenciated manner. And this only in moderated tempi (at least so that it can be perceived). The new generation of organists will have this on their syllabus. No more "personal" interpretations, but historical interpretations.

People online are sick today, really they are, as if they loose all contact with real life. • @sabrinensis
    @sabrinensis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pachelbel is so much a forgotten composer. His works have been eclipsed by the “Canon” in D (also ignoring its companion “Gigue”). In his time he was an equal to JS Bach, although Bach was of the Protestant North German organ “school” (influenced by Sweelinck, Scheidt and Buxtehude), whereas Pachelbel was influenced by a Catholic south German school. [Can someone supply Pachelbel’s supposed Catholic influences - considering his music is wholly Lutheran]?

      please enlarge upon 'a dance.' I have the ponderous belief that almost all classical/baroque composers are rooted in dance. That the compositions in manuscript lend themselves to addiction in rationality, which robs us of the music's physical delight. The craftsmen are not the arbiters of musical quality, that is the audience's privilege. LvB practically claps us to dance...DANCE!
