  • Welcome ladies and gents, time for the long awaited full re-entry video in Space Shuttle Endeavour. We make it all the way down from 450,000 feet and land safely at Edwards AFB. I do my best to explain the process throughout, but Bret Copeland does a better job than I can here:
    • How to Land the Space ...

    What an amazing touchdown from such a high final approach. I too can thoroughly recommend watching Bret Copeland's highly informative and entertaining talk explaining the concepts about how the Space Shuttle re-entry procedure is achieved.

    I was a mad keen glider pilot in the 80's when these guys flew this ship to mother Earth. Myself and other glider pilots around the world were so happy to hear that the French Aviation authority awarded the pilots the Gold 'C' with three diamonds for the landing as it was an actual 'glide' That is the highest medal you can attain as a glider pilot...or it was then in those days.

    • @SirHuddy
      @SirHuddy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Chris Witzel there is none,the shuttle is gliding in at this point,it's to heavy and the thing is even if the engines are one the amount of fuel needed would be immense,shuttles don't create lift well,once they start coming back down it's just all gliding.

    • @carlkinder8201
      @carlkinder8201 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can model the boosters & fuel tank in plane maker. Adding the correct amount of jato burn, can be used to simulate the srb boosters. You just need to add "jettison stores" & "jettison fuel tanks" button in the cockpit for staging. The fuel tank is modelled as a fuel tank, & the boosters are modelled as air to ground rockets. Haven't tried xp11, but i know that it's possible in xp10.

    I did this numerous times when I had x-plane 8....when I upped to 10 however, the displays had changed drastically...and I was lost....and since my pc's mother board fried several years ago, and I know only have a google chromebook, which has no hard drive or DVD / CD drive....well...I can only dream for the time being. Pretty amazed you salvaged that landing after starting your turn so early.

    After working on the shuttles for 21 years, it's nice to see X-Plane to continue to add them, but the interior and landing profiles are so wrong they make me cringe for a game that thrives on realism. Have fun with the shuttle, but understand your displays and handling are off.

    • @petercharlesphotography7169
      @petercharlesphotography7169 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Agreed. I think Xplane thrives on aircraft realism; the shuttle re-entry program is probably far to complex for Xplane to handle real time when one considers 17,000MPG and thousands of simultaneous corrections with the RCS system. There is a reason Xplanecosts 60 bucks and a shuttle around 200 million. :)

      @@petercharlesphotography7169 Actually X-Plane being at $60 is irrevelant.
      Orbiter space sim with the addon "Space Shuttle Ultra" (both free) nails every aspect of the Space Shuttle, from launch, rendezvous, to Entry Interface and TAEM.

    The re-entry is flown with partial brake deployment 70% above Mach 3, switching to modulated below, with a moderate drag deployment for body-flap and elevons. This gives the 'increased efficiency' when flying the minimum energy approach, where this can be closed/improved. There is also a margin of q-bar max and high drag configuration to waste excess energy, as well as extending the s-turns.
    S-turns seems to number only 4-5 roll reversals, over the entire entry, rather than the rapid waggling seen here. A significant cross track error is eliminated/generated before the reversal in each case. First roll at 0 then First reversal is ~9 minutes, second ~4.5 minutes, third ~3.3 minutes, 4th, 5th ~1.5 minutes each, a brief alignment to the TAEM and ~80 seconds on the HAC, 90 seconds on approach landing and roll-out.
    Being high and fast is a problem because the orbiter is thermally limited, and structurally limited. The intent is to follow the central line of the Vert-sit with a draggy config, reverting to the high energy "hot" descent if over energy, or the clean, lower alpha, lower drag. no roll approach if under energy.

    Great video and extremely informative. But during your S rolls on entry you should keep your AOA at 40 degrees and adjust your bank angle to control speed and trajectory. I just noticed you were hovering around anywhere from 5 to 20 degrees and that steep of a glide slope would burn there non high heat layered areas of the shuttle. Sorry if I sound like a dick but it was something that caught my attention.

    No shit this is more stressful than a measly CAT III ILS 😂😂😂 ILS puts me to sleep these days 😴
    This was fucking awesome though 🤘🏻😆 I’m definitely gonna give this a crack. The shuttle pilots practised this endlessly in between missions with a modified gulfstream, I think they usually aim to touch down at about 297 knots and of course bang on centre line 🤪

    This is the first time I've seen a video of this. An outside view of the S-turns would be good. You do the space shuttle, helicopters, and war birds. Is there anything you can't do? I have a suggestion, in X-Plane there are some Aerobatic Planes. In reality this type of plane has fuel pumps etc. that will operate upside down. Since whenever I fly a new plane, I get upside down I was wondering how good these planes were.

    I got a space shuttle with working engines, and I am currently stuck in space and continuing to leave earth at an alarming rate, and I know a stupid trick to get back down but I feel it is cheating, because I just change my own altitude through the maps, but I wanna learn to do it manually, and the little air motors don't really have any effect unless I am in my own atmosphere, so what do I do to stop and come back to earth, I am traveling at a speed of mack holy shit,,, if that makes any sense, beyond the point where I can't see myself on my own map, if I were to get I am traveling at a speed of 37000 knots, if you got any ideas let me know, it is kinda cold out here, and I miss home,

    I have always been curious is the heat produced on re entry because of the extreme high speed of the craft hitting the atmosphere?
    What I want to know is, if a craft could be slowed down to 1000 mph or less would the re entry be so hot?

    • @akulahawk
      @akulahawk 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the first question, the simple answer is "yes." The heat is caused by friction. Now to the second question, a re-entry would have much less heat if spacecraft velocity could be reduced to 1,000 mph prior to "entry interface." This is also very impractical as it would take a lot of fuel to slow down that much, all that fuel is very heavy. It took a LOT of fuel to get up to orbital velocity, it would also take a LOT of fuel to use engines to slow down that much. It's far cheaper to just use thermal shielding and use enough fuel to slow down just enough that re-entry must happen. Friction with the atmosphere (drag) will slow the spacecraft down reasonably efficiently, though it means parts of re-entry will have a lot of heat.

    • @Nubyrc
      @Nubyrc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeremy Hawk I ask because I figured out how to make internal thrust drive, aka proppelent less drive.
      A device where the propulsion is not from burning rocket fuel or relies on grabbing air to move or lift such as propellers or wings.
      In the claims section of the patent I claimed it can slow down and maintain a safe decent for space craft re entering Earths atmosphere.
      This video is the proof of concept video, I will not be releasing the next model for a few months as the patent changes for the design will have to be added.
      th-cam.com/video/5LpF5k7CfIQ/w-d-xo.html

    • @akulahawk
      @akulahawk 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If a propellentless device can produce sufficient thrust to change spacecraft velocity fast enough to drop the entry speed by about 16,000 mph before entry interface occurs and use only whatever energy is already onboard, that would be a tremendous device. Changing velocity by just a couple hundred feet/second will deorbit a spacecraft. Maneuvers while in orbit don't require much thrust and therefore not much energy so that's where propellantless thrust devices will come in handy.
      I hope you're on to something useful. I'd be thrilled and a half if it ends up a part of future spacecraft propulsion as long as it truly does work in a vacuum and power requirements are relatively modest. Good luck!

    • @Nubyrc
      @Nubyrc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeremy Hawk The device in the video is real. Yes I am on to something.
      It is like anything else, it's about scaling in the right proportions.
      I had hoped people would take interest in what I have already achieved and want to be part of making the next model.
      The beauty of how it works is that it runs on electricity. And while rocket power provides faster acceleration to reach very high speed to acheave a maintainable orbit, rockets have the problem of diminishing returns in the amount of fuel weight goes up a lot as required to lift the higher weight of whatever is being put in space.
      My device does not need that, however being combined with rocket power to get into space may be a requirement for now.
      Research and development will lead to devices that can be self contained and just attached to anything you want to move or lift.

      Matrix it's not technically fire that surrounds the orbiter during atmospheric reentry. It's basically a whole bunch of gasses that burn up from a whole bunch of speed then the electrons go crazy witch causes the orange or yellowish glow around the orbiter.
