I've done this mission so many times and never noticed the elites being dropped off, and I never really thought about the elites bodies still being there, even in an area that would've easily infected them. It's either they are immune, like the CE elite you find left behind in Guilty Spark during the flashback cutscene, or they just died of fall damage lol 💀
Yeah. I remember looking at them back in the day thinking it was a secret armor 🤔 I never noticed the Elites being dropped off from the phantom though 😂
The gravemind being able to speak to us is actually known. Itself is the Primordial, one of the last surviving Precursors. The Precursors were a Godlike (more than the Forerunners) species that created life in our galaxy and possibly many other galaxies. They have the understanding of neural physics and can communicate telepathically. This is how it can get into our heads
If you push the bodies to the last room where you get the message from Cortana, you can pop the flood sacks on the wall and the bodies will become infected.
There are some hints left to what was ment to happen to them in the game code, as well as the original design document for the level. You obviously know that originally, most of Cortana's level was the actually ment for floodgate right? Well what do you think the first nasty thing you were gonna fight before you went down was? 4 flooded up best of the best elites lol ((you should see some of the original cut bits fo cortanas level...flooded arbitars and trying to get to high charitys core in a scarab xD )).
Thats really cool. Some of this where news to me. The part with the Scarab was mentioned in the legendary edition commentary if I remember correctly? Its been awhile since I watched it 🤔
@@OweMeOneKenobi It was indeed :) I believe the other bits were talked about in the developer comentaries for 2 and 3 ((It's so painfull to hear what got cut from 2... like over half the game and only some of it put back in to 3)).

I learned about this recently. Fun fact if you destroy the body of one of those flood combat forms the remains will turn blue instead of silver 😊
