Here in the Netherlands/Europe, country is a niche. A few years ago, I discovered true country artists like Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. A perfect match. Really love it!
Townes Van Zandt is definitely a legend. Poncho and Lefty, If I needed you, Lungs.... I think Gram would have been bigger than the Stones. Mick copied the Bakersfield country sound. Kieth Richards was GP soul mate. Wild Horses quite possibly was written by GP. It was first performed by GP a year before the Stones recorded it.
The world lost a true talent when Gram passed. And my god, Emmy Lou Harris was then and still is today, a woman I could fall in love with over and over just by hearing her voice.

Thanks a ton for this! I am in my thirties and just heard Gram Parsons' name yesterday. I simply LOVE his music, and would love to hear ANYTHING he sings. It feels like this kind of music has been in my blood since I was born (although I'm not from America but from a country in Asia).

She also said she felt guilty she hadn't been more aware of the problems he was having at that time. Hence her lifelong loyalty to him. I still can't believe how good they sounded together.
I love GP and EH but it rubs me the wrong way that people romanticize a man cheating on his wife on the road. She wouldn't have her on the cover of Grievous Angel with Gram and I don't blame her. It must have been agonizing.

Now this is what I call Country Music! Emmylou's voice is just mesmerising, and Gram accompanies perfectly. Awesome guitar, and lap/pedal steel. Wow, I love this music. America thank you for the music from the UK!
Emmylou brings out the very best in every one she sings with. As good as she sings by herself, her harmonies with others she sings with are incredible. Too bad Gram had to leave so young, imagine the music they would have done together had he lived!

I agree that this is great country music, way better than the crap they call country today but whats funny is Drugstore truck Drivin Man is written about Ralph Emery the all night dj on WSM radio, home of the Grand Ole Opry, and the way he totally dissed the Byrds when they appeared on the Opry and his show. Told everyone they weren't country enough and he hated them.
daniel morris I am aware of the story behind the song. Not sure if it's true, but I think Gram Parsons was being interviewed on Emery's show when he was dissed. The way I see it, if that is true, sort of looks like Emery set him up to bring him on his show and purposely dis him in front of his listening audience, which is a classless move on his part. And knowing how congenitally lobotomized many people can be, especially people who think that radio and TV personalities are gods, many of them probably agreed with their radio god. Also, I'm not a big fan of the country establishment like Emery and the Grand Ole Opry, since you have to follow the way they want you to do things and think in order to be recognized and given credit by them. The Grand Ole Opry kicked Hank Williams out and that to me is a big no no. If any of the big wigs connected with the Opry that made that decision had not sinned, then they could have cast the first stone that kicked out Hank.
I though Hank's alcoholism interfering with his ability to perform was why he was kicked out of the Grand Ole Opry. It's really sad, but it's not as though his dismissal wasn't justified.

Very low budget operation and weaker signal than say, WNEW-FM in Manhattan, but they filled a niche for serious music fans who had no time for hearing the “big single off an album” mass-appeal format that too many stations milked. Also attracted great progressive rock DJ talent who sometimes moved on to bigger stations.
Hank Williams made country music likeable. The record companies started adding strings to country music in the early 60's so as to lose the hillbilly sound/image and attract new buyers for more sales.

She was an unknown back then, but holy cow....even them I knew she had an unbelievable voice. Later she hooked up with Gram Parsons....I have their only albums recorded together.

Country music has been likeable for millions of fans for many decades now. It was selling big even during the Depression. Maybe it's more like Gram helped you catch up to what others already knew.
Drug Store Truck Driving Man was for Ralph Emory who was married to Skeeter Davis and badly abused her. Ralph had a late night DJ job and put down anyone who didn't fit the Gnashville mold.
Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man is a song associated to the against racism movement. But after reading about some sad happenings in Gram Parsons' childhood and teenhood, I wonder if it is not about his stepfather.
We know the story behind "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man" because Gram Parsons gave an interview about it. It actually was written about a Nashville DJ that Gram liked that spoke harshly about the Byrds' Album "Sweetheart of the Rodeo". Gram and Roger McGuinn wrote it together.
At the very least, the incredible feeling he brought to all his music must have come from that tragic childhood. So much went wrong there. He had a life of great luxury but not much emotional support.
I read Twenty Thousand Roads. Very well done objective look at a compelling story. There is nothing factually wrong in there. However, there is more that he didn’t pick up on. Emmylou is a true Angel from heaven and Gram knew it. He loved her and it scared him. From his experience growing up such true and pure love was not possible.

A sad but funny commentary to his intro to the song...he says it's an old song he did with the Byrds. Son you die from a morphine overdose at 27 and you likely wrote it in a London Hotel Room with the lead of the Byrds when you was 25. So...oops....maybe he was being prophetic. Gram was with The Byrds for about 15 minutes. ha I love Gram, and frankly The Byrds, but Gram is Country, The Byrds, not exactly.

Drug Store Truck Driving Man was for Ralph Emory who was married to Skeeter Davis and badly abused her. Ralph had a late night DJ job and put down anyone who didn't fit the Gnashville mold.

Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man is a song associated to the against racism movement. But after reading about some sad happenings in Gram Parsons' childhood and teenhood, I wonder if it is not about his stepfather.
It is a heavy burden to return from War and weight of the PSTD never goes away, just lies in wait.

We know the story behind "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man" because Gram Parsons gave an interview about it. It actually was written about a Nashville DJ that Gram liked that spoke harshly about the Byrds' Album "Sweetheart of the Rodeo". Gram and Roger McGuinn wrote it together.
At the very least, the incredible feeling he brought to all his music must have come from that tragic childhood. So much went wrong there. He had a life of great luxury but not much emotional support.

I read Twenty Thousand Roads. Very well done objective look at a compelling story. There is nothing factually wrong in there. However, there is more that he didn’t pick up on. Emmylou is a true Angel from heaven and Gram knew it. He loved her and it scared him. From his experience growing up such true and pure love was not possible.
@@mattthompson9826 I read the book too and agree. Your comment is very insightful. There was still a lot of psychological work to be done for Gram to come to terms with his trauma. I like to think it would have worked out with Emmy. We're left with his legacy. His lyrics are pure poetry.

A sad but funny commentary to his intro to the song...he says it's an old song he did with the Byrds. Son you die from a morphine overdose at 27 and you likely wrote it in a London Hotel Room with the lead of the Byrds when you was 25. So...oops....maybe he was being prophetic. For him time had a cosmic American compression, just sayin. Great, a real Great, and them country music hall of fame nitwits are just nimwits in my book... just sayin....don't mean to be mean to nobody. He was a candle who burned bright...but burned out hot, way to short. Dude you hit it out of the park!
