one of the most bittersweet endings of an American film I've seen in a long time. I found this scene as frustrating as when it happened in the book. For their whole relationship thats all she needed from him, validation of what they were to each other and for Ray to express his feelings - but he leaves it until theyre over and she's (just) repaired herself. The way Claire portrays Mirabelle just after he says it is amazing and heartbreaking, like Mirabelle is on the verge of breaking down again
She was the alive, young, spirited part of Ray Porter. He lost that part long ago, and he feels so sad and empty without it. But no other person can take the place of ones lost inner child. Ray would have had to do a lot of work to dig that out, but...he doesn’t miss it enough to do that. He’s “happy enough” in his loneliness. Steve Martin is such a talented writer, and of course all the actors are wonderful.
I never really tried watching this film coz it looked boring, until yesterday. I watched it from the beginning to end and--gee I found myself really connecting to it. It was very relatable. Not on the very shallow aspect of it, but the idea of finding that one person in the most unexpected time of your life... That one person you've actually imagined about. Mirabelle was so in love with the idea of finding her 'dream guy'. And she found it in Ray Porter. I mean who wouldn't fall for someone like him (regardless of the age). She never one bit felt like she was being used because the man did treat him well despite the commitment issues... If only Ray Porter realized what he was missing. This specific scene never fails to make me cry. You would feel the loss, hurt, disappointment, relief and hope. I always thought--why does a man do that? He knows deep down that he loves her but shrugs the idea off and when the girl grows tired of hoping, without hesitations, he would just let her go. He knows that he's hurt her and loves her so dearly but he wouldn't man up to it. So frustrating and excruciatingly painful and that part, I think, I would never understand about men in general.
“How is it possible to miss a woman he kept at a distance so when she was gone, he would not miss her. Only then does he realise wanting part of her and not all of her had hurt them both.” Been there and had the same realisation. Man does it suck.
Ratula Morie, “Why don’t you love me?” with the heartbreak laid bare on her face! Guts me every time because like you I’ve been Mirabelle - I think we all have.
@Jacklyn Everage totally. It was selfish of him to say it then. The way Claire Danes acts when he says it, is heartbreaking. You can see her almost fall backwards but then pull herself back up emotionally, stronger than before
I love this little gem of a movie ! Knew nothing of it, just started watching one night because I liked the cast and found myself really liking it. This ending is really poignant and the emotion on Claire Dane's face when he tells her he really loved her hits you dead center in your heart . This is one for anyone's movie collection.
Claire Danes is superb at portraying that kind of hurt and heartbreak! She portrays very similar emotions in 'It's All About Love' ( a little known film but I really recommend!), 'The Family Stone' and 'Evening'. Every time I see her in a movie it evokes the bittersweet crush I had (have!) on her!
@ArcofNeptune She is indeed superb at portraying that. Thanks for recommending some more of her work. Have only seen The Family Stone which I also enjoyed. The crush, I understand fully.
My boyfriend is 30 years older than me. We are navigating our differences but I’m crazy about him, he is madly in love with me. Can’t imagine being with anyone else.
I bought this book when it was just out in my country and I read it several times. It makes me cry every time and so does the film. Beautiful story, beautiful characters, beautiful everything.
I enjoyed the movie. The last thing he said in the narrative about "it was life" was a cop out for lack of character and integrity. The poor behavior on the part of the older gentleman didn't keep me from enjoying the film, but it pisses me off that old guys with money think this is an ok way to treat woman...and it isn't just "life. It's a terrible way to treat someone.
Spoiler Alert: She was spinning in circles, trying to elevate herself but not having any sense of a support system. He was her mentor who saw her potential & introduced her to what she could create for herself. He did what he could & then he set her free. She not only made a name for herself in the field she wanted, but she inspired the man who would end up her bf, to change his life to the better, too. He was inspired by his on-the-road music artist boss, as well. Ray Porter was settled into the life he worked hard to create & maintain, but if he ever really loved any woman, it was her. Steve Martin is a deep guy. How cool for us. :)
It's weird to think how he uses 'did' instead of 'do'. Almost like love is transient. You can love someone at some point in your life and then not be fully in love with them later.
Scalabur, To Ray love IS transient absolutely and there is a coldness to his love - a failure to understand how transformative real love can be beyond the present convenience and gratification even though he knows she truly loves him. Very sad
Scalabur, For Ray EVERYTHING is transient - not just love but even his homes and his delusional plan “in case I meet someone someday and have kids” that hurts Mirabelle so much! Ray has structured his life and his heart in such a way as to ensure that will never happen - it only serves as a device to keep any REAL emotional commitment at a distance. It is his tragedy and for a time, Mirabelle’s, but she was strong enough to “hurt now” in order to move on from Ray even though she loved him.
Yeah it is , as well as the sterile cuckoo , and Wong kar wai happy together and in the mood for love...not a happy ending but still a happy ending love the irony of it🤩
Me senti como a moça nesse filme quando meu namorado disse que comigo não casava a maior frustração da minha vida pois achava que tinha encomtradoa pessoa certa ,nunca o esqueci me casei com outro mas ele foi e continua o amor da minha vida.
I think he didn’t treat her badly at all 😥 When he slept with the other woman they hadn’t defined their relationship yet, and he even told her the truth right away! Money is not everything but you could see that he really cared about her a lot and he improved her life in many ways 😭 I guess it just wasn’t enough for her 💔😭
In many ways I agree with you BUT the FATAL and tragic flaw in their relationship from the very beginning was their COMPLETE failure to LISTEN to each other and not hear what they wanted to hear! Their expectations of each other were completely at odds - Ray believed she knew their relationship had an “expiration date” while Mirabelle in her vulnerability believed he cared for her on a much deeper level than merely being decent and generous, which he was and mistakenly believed to be enough for them both. Sadly pain and regret for them both.
@@lindahoffman2692 I agree with you... but I also think that those are things you need to repeat severl times, because at the beginning you say that, but then if you keep on seeing each others like a real couple... It's real tricky. Sorry, just went through something very similar to this these past 3 months. Kind of reflecting on it.
@@PuolikuuIrene Poulikuulrene, Your words “like a real couple” hurt my heart for you and perfectly crystallized what was wrong between them! And you’re right they did behave in most respects the way two people involved in a “serious” relationship do. But they also had an almost complete lack of COMMUNICATION about their relationship and their expectations of the future - they both made ASSUMPTIONS that weren’t based on the reality of what was actually happening between them. For example the fact that it was SO catastrophically painful for Mirabelle that he slept with someone else didn’t sound warning bells to Ray that she was clearly deeply in love and expected Fidelity. While from her perspective how hard Ray tried to make it up to her and get her back SEEMED to Mirabelle proof that he did, in fact, LOVE her and want a future after all. Not until she heartbreakingly asked him “Why don’t you LOVE me Ray?” to which he replies “I thought you knew” did reality hit them both between the eyes! I’m so sorry you too have been through that kind of pain ❤️
They sell the score on Amazon but is unbelievable expensive. I had the fortune to get it for a very low price, it was previously owned by a library. But if you don't own the CD, you'll probably won't find the complete score anywhere.
Anyone know the name of the music being played in the background starting at 1:59, sounds like the theme to the film but have been unable to find it. The closest I have so far found is Lonely Mirabelle.
This hit very close to home. Breaks my heart every time I watch it. Such a beautiful book and a fantastic film.
I agree, wholeheartedly.
Story of my life too

The way her boyfriend hugs her and supports her shows that life goes on. There will be someone for everyone.
Yes 😥🔥♥️
Yes!!
One hopes... 🙂

This analysis helps this movie make sense for a simpleton like myself. Very nice.
Perfectly said
What girl hasn't been there? This scene, the music, the emotion...breaks my heart every time.
Boys have been there too :) Deeply deeply moving and even cathartic....we're likely missed in ways that went unexpressed too. :)
Story of my life...
So heartfelt. So well played.
"I did love you" Omg her fucking face. Makes me cry sooo much
This scene breaks my heart everytime I see it.
mine too...
mine too
This movie is for anyone who has loved someone who did love back, but just not enough. I hurt when he admitted that he loved her.
such an under appreciated classic! ♥
This movie and ending hits me hard. Top 10

Im a guy, and this end hurts... How can you be so stupid, love someone and not admit it. You are right, we are hard to understand..
absolutely....some people must lose a great love in order to act right if they are lucky to find it again
The same for me. I tend to wonder: what if he admitted his love for her right then and there? what if they did stay together after all?
Beautiful movie, unforgettable.
“How is it possible to miss a woman he kept at a distance so when she was gone, he would not miss her. Only then does he realise wanting part of her and not all of her had hurt them both.” Been there and had the same realisation. Man does it suck.

Same, it took me until just now to realize it
Ratula Morie, “Why don’t you love me?” with the heartbreak laid bare on her face! Guts me every time because like you I’ve been Mirabelle - I think we all have.
Me too 😢
We’ve all been a little bit Mirabelled. 😞
Just got this on dvd... brilliant underated film... and cast 👌💖
How I love this movie and as weird as it was to watch Martin play the romantic lead- it is the story that I fell in love wigj
It was very selfish of him to tell her he did love her, after everything they went through
Thank you!!
yes, but i think she already knew that, it just wasn't the right way.
Yepp
@Jacklyn Everage totally. It was selfish of him to say it then. The way Claire Danes acts when he says it, is heartbreaking. You can see her almost fall backwards but then pull herself back up emotionally, stronger than before

Razor, The play of so many emotions across her face is gut wrenching - pain, regret, loss and finally acceptance and even forgiveness. Stunning
stumbled onto this one maybe 5 years ago, and was just mesmerized by it. Danes is amazing in this! ♥

Great movie. So real!!!! So underrated!!!!!
I have always loved this movie. Claire Danes, by the way, is superb.
Makes me cry every time! Beautiful book and beautiful movie!
This movie found me and gave me a hug, it will be alright
This ending portrays, it’s really life ❤
A fantastic movie! Very heartfelt all the way through. I can't understand those who said it was boring.
I cry every time.
Love this part so much. Made me cry when he said that he did love her xx
Its like that part in sex on the city carrie ask to mr. Big why no me?? Omg.. whay some times men just dont choose the rigth girl!! Why?

The closure every man should have. No dramas, a little regret maybe, but all well said

This scene is so sad.
This is the best companion piece to Secretary (2002).
What an interesting pairing!
So beautiful 😭😭
Exquisite.

Annie hall as well 😁
Jeremy reminds me of myself, strangely

Esta película
He took advantage of a vulnerable, young girl using his power and money.
He knew better but did it anyway.
Not ok.
Please. She didn’t have to go out with him at any point.
The way he let her go tells everything. Fullstop.
Meu filme preferido ❤️

The director Anand Tucker seemed sooo needy, the way he hung all over Ms. Danes between takes. She wouldn't have to put up that crap today.
