I second that! Keep an eye on this great channel and all those like it. There is actually a massive 'movement' taking place and the internet is the best tool to use, as at present, it can not be censored by those who wish to exploit and make profit from us. Tune in and spread it on my friends!!!

I'm pleased that cookingupastory followed up with Vandana Shiva. I agree with almost all of what she has to say about these issues for instance; food produced locally should be consumed locally.
Whether or not US Agribusiness is trying to create dependency; there are always shift in global markets.
"Food as a weapon," will without a doubt backfire creating opportunity for industrializing countries such as India and Africa to benefit from their production and US dependency on it.

Keep reading, watching, talking to your friends, sharing information you find... Or, 'vote with your fork' by buying locally produced good, clean, fair food. Get to know where your food comes from, ask about it at the grocery store, ask at the restaurant, get a Seafood Watch guide (lists out fish which are endangered & those that are not). These are just starter suggestions. Anyone else want to jump in here with their thoughts?

After getting more into the 'bio' marketing, aswell as possibilities of genenetic modification for 'good purposes' like golden rice, I found this video. It's very enlightening.
While golden rice might be a good concept, the way it will be patented and made unavailable, maybe contaminating normal rice fields, suing farmers, destroying traditional rice, seems a far worse problem than just a lack of Vitamin A! You made me look at the bigger picture of our food industries, thank you.

I agree that food does not need to be commodified - but also that the trade of food needs an overhaul.
Go back 2000 years. Trade's purpose was to obtain something you did not have, in exchange for something you had in surplus.
Today, even the Greeks and Romans would be confused as to why we trade oranges for oranges or wheat for wheat.
So you are right - what should be traded are the foods that can only be grown in a certain area or climate.

This is all very true. I study bio-pharmaceuticals production, which are engineered much the same way Monsanto engineers seed. Theres a similar problem there too, the proteins are designed to be used as treatments rather than in cures. Also life saving proteins such as TPA are deliberately manufacture to be super expensive. Recouping R&D cost is often put to blame. (continued)

And diversification would absolutely help - and not just to feed people.
The problem is we forgot about crop rotation. Now we have Panama Disease threatening to wipe out the banana, we have embedded pests and diseases...that could be eradicated by rotating a series of diverse crops. (Additionally, it helps farmers to more consistently make money, as opposed to being forced to live on one sum of money for a year.)

But to just criticize and not give any alternative is not the right attitude. Also, it is unwise to stop the progress and reverse the process. Yes, it is true that the protagonists of the green revolution story did not take an integrated approach to the issues that they faced then. They may have left out many variables like sustainability and eco-balance out of their solution. But they were real people who faced a dangerous situation and acted to the best of their judgement.

pains of hunger and starvation before the green revolution and saw the difference after the revolution. Just because you belong to the third world does not give you unfettered freedom to peddle any unsubstantiated views as truth. Yes, sustainability and eco unfriendliness are issues with this kind of farming. But that is the next step as how to bring genetic engg and eco-sensitivity together. Geneticists should take up that challenge and Iam sure they will one day crack the issue.

Solving any problem, especially of the kind like world wide hunger, are multi faceted issues and to integrate the n-number of variables and to arrive at a solution is no mean matter. It is like controlling an octopus where you control one leg the other wriggles free. Especially for the men in the line of fire , they sometimes tend to ignore the long term effects of any solution but that is the part of the process of arriving at a balanced solution. But to go into a denial mode is cowardice.

I would NEVER disagree w/Vandana Shiva!!! However, what I have to say is just an addition: Firstly, we produce enough food on this planet to feed all 7billion of us. The problem is 1 of distribution. Most people who are starving are poverty stricken. When a crisis hits - economic or natural disaster - drought that leads to famine for ex. - those who are already struggling starve. In addition, as she states, most of those who dying ARE farmers b/c they have been targeted.

PS, urban farmer, I've grown a lot of things over the years, but never enough to feed my family, although if I didn't have work for hire, I suppose I could convert a quarter acre to a truck garden, and work the land. Over the centuries it has turned out that specialization was the most efficient means for all sorts of production, including food.

Its the trickling down of capitalistic practices on a world wide scale. Many times the scientist behind GM foods aren't doing it as some sinister plot to aid corporate profits. It usually stems from a scientific curiosity. Human's have been genetically modifying food by manipulating nature predating modern science. The difference between past modifications and current ones is the near limitless options that are now available. Some are fine, but the most profitable can be and have been harmful.

By the same token we may all have to go back to the ways of her primitive ancestors and live in the forests as the apes did. Is it feasible? Green revolution was a firefighting operation and it did work wonders and easily Borlaug can be called God who saved humanity, notwithstanding Shiva's comments. Human overpopulation is the most pressing environmental issues, aggravating the forces behind global warming, environmental pollution, habitat loss, the sixth mass extinction, intensive farming practices and the consumption of finite natural resources, such as fresh water, arable land and fossil fuels, at speeds faster than their rate of regeneration. As the human population continues to explode, finite natural resources, such as fossil fuels, fresh water, arable land, coral reefs and frontier forests, continue to plummet.

What she talks is not true. She says rural people are going hungry because of genetic engineering. Ok may be true to some extent . But what about the 50s 60s and 70s .Actually the irony is that genetic engg was born out of compulsions and an emergency situation when in the early 70 s nations like India were reeling under the effects of mass scale starvation deaths and hunger started to even shape the political character of nations.

India was following traditional methods of agriculture and when that did not deliver, green revolution came as a welcome relief. This lady is so full of herself and she is so full of self pity. That she is a woman and from third world and also conceited that she is so educated. What has all this got to do with the issue at hand? Education means talking the truth and not passing off some baseless prejudices as scientific evidence.Yes sustainability and symbiosis are issues.

You keep sounding shocked at ordinary words. "Rebuked" means corrected, chastised, and I've already done that. You are not "discussing" anything, merely repeating your unproven assertions despite your source's plain statement "Proof of toxicity is hard to decide..." THEY said that and you've decided it's not relevant. LOL! Stick with "i don't even care if...gmo's were...safe, i will not ever support or eat them." That much is probably true and makes for a good sermon, if only to the choir.

Had the green revolution not happened, India would have quickly descended into a dark sinister totalitarian state . Exactly opposite to what she says. Simple question to her : Why did green revolution happen ? What was happening before that ? why was green revolution celebrated as a victory over hunger ? Was genetic engg the reason for the starvation deaths of 70s? Why agricultural genetic engg was not even around in the 70s. And as usual, crying that she is a woman and she is from t-world.

Meantime, I suggest you read and try to comprehend the report, not just the authors' hype on their flawed meta-study. Even they acknowledge that "Proof of toxicity is hard to decide on the basis of these conditions." In their study, it was impossible to decide.

What tendentious rhetoric! The woman rationalizes a predisposition against free markets by inverting cause and effect. Consider: there was much hunger in India long before there were GMOs or manufactured fertilizer, and the ability to keep seed for next year's planting was part of the education farmers had to learn from their fathers.
Softball interviewer allows her to expound her theories, and the very critical challenge Siva seems to espouse is ironicly completely absent from the interview.
