  • This addition to my guitar collection was planned (and discussed in prior videos), and in fact replaces several others. I thought it was time to replace my entry-level acoustic guitars with something a bit more high end. But I didn't want to stray from what I find most comfortable in an acoustic guitar, which is the Yamaha APX body shape and neck profile. So I took the opportunity when I saw one on clearance a couple of months ago to snag a top-line APX-1200II for a killer deal. Unfortunately I failed to hit record on the computer, so the guitar mic and the preamp output weren't recorded. But it sounded pretty good through the overhead mics so I went with it!

    Love the video and the guitar! I have one of the old low end ones- i think its a 500 or 500 II, and ive been wanting to upgrade to something solid… this may be the ticket. I wanted something with the piezo/mic electronics for sound and body tapping, and obviously it has to be thin enough and comfortable to play( like my apx!) so now im considering just getting one of the higher end ones. Question, are all the 1200’s made in china or can you get one made in japan? Obviously that would be the best case scenario!

      Hey, thanks... I also upgraded from a 500 (I had both the II and the III for a time - I'm not really sure what the difference was). They've been made in China for at least the last 10 years. Quality control at Yamaha's factory is absolutely top notch though, no step-down at all in quality compared with the Japanese guitars.

    Thank you so much for your video. I am a beginner and am currently learning on a full size accoustic guitar and have been looking for something more comfortable to play. I am trying to decide between Yamaha and Maton but the APX you are playing sounds amazing (as does your playing. We are currently in lockdown so I haven't been able to get to a guitar shop but everything is opening up soon. Thanks again for doing the video. All the best to you and your family.

      Thank you so much for your comment! Yes, the APX (or a similarly sized guitar) is IMO a great choice for a comfortable acoustic. I've never been into the big box guitars, as I'm mostly an electric guitar player. The pickup system in the 600 and 700 series isn't amazing, but particularly as a beginner what's most important is that the guitar feels comfortable and inspires you to play more. Good luck on your guitar journey :)

    ok this is a new video. I have the one below that one ordered. the APX 1000 in natural color and should soon be here. I am getting her for my 61st birthday this Saturday Feb/9/2019 and hoping she will be here tomorrow or my birthday Saturday but no hopes up. I I want a good small body acoustic electric guitar and this the 1000 fits my budget i want to spend and has all i need. I live in a small town in Newfoundland Canada and only way i can see any real assortment of guitars is 2.5 hours away and then still limited to brands. but I ordered mine from there. I have only seen the guitar in a store and only looking not touching so do you think i made a wise choice? I have a Takamine EF 325 src i bought in 1990 and am passing it on to my son . Always found it uncomfortable to play but had to buy From USA then so never even saw it before i bought it or touch either which is not the way to buy your first good guitar lol. No choice thought then.I got a great deal on this acoustic amp yesterday on Amazon for $112 Candaian delivered to my door with taxes in too and a 2 year DOP warranty for $17.56 so $129.56 to my door.
    . I don't know if you ever heard of that amp but it it has been rated on here as being a great little practice amp and that is all i want for my living room . Please give me your opinion of my choices. Link to it below and link to a review on youtube on it below that for you to go by.

      Hi Wayne, I completely understand the having to buy stuff sight unseen from a distance. It's tricky. IMO the APX1000 is a great choice and I hope it meets your needs.
      I have never owned an acoustic amp, and have only ever tried a couple (Fishman Loudbox Artist and an AER Compact 60) so I'm unable to pass judgement on that, I'm afraid.
      Hope you have a very happy birthday and your new toys arrive in time for you to enjoy them :)

    which one do you think best the apx 1200 ii or l transacoustic fs ta? The latter only has a solid wooden top

    • @MartinCliffe
      @MartinCliffe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never tried the FS-TA, so I can't say for sure. They're quite different guitars, at quite different price points (the FS-TA is half the price of the APX at Thomann - much closer to the APX700II). For the price of the FS-TA, including the Transacoustic feature, I'd have to wonder what other corners have been cut. To me, the APX is the perfect acoustic guitar for an electric guitar player. It's small-bodied, has a comfortable neck, and sounds great plugged in. The FS-TA looks much more like a traditional acoustic, but with the... I don't want to call the Transacoustic a "gimmick", but I can't think why I'd ever want the feature. The mahogany body will sound and respond differently to the rosewood in the APX too.

    Hola ! I have the APX 1200 I, I’m in Quebec. Do you feel you have a huge difference with this V2 ?

    • @MartinCliffe
      @MartinCliffe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Denis, thanks for watching. I honestly have no idea what the difference is between the v1 and v2. Different preamp maybe? Or possibly wood choice.
      I'm far from an acoustic guitar expert, I just know that I really liked this one so I bought it :)

    • @denislachance6277
      @denislachance6277 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL I’m an electric as well 😁. But I selected it because soundwise, it was the excellent choice. I’m an happy camper. You were recording with an external mic ? Or were you connected to an interface ?

      @@denislachance6277 That's great to hear. To me they're the ideal acoustic guitar for an electric player.
      The sound from this video all actually came from my Tascam DR-40 that was positioned just above my head. I did have it plugged in (and had a Shure Beta 98Amp/C clamped to the desk) but I forgot to hit record on the computer! But I'm really happy with the sound I got.

    Hello Martin! I live in a country where such high end, solid wood made guitar are not available. But I am planning to order for an apx 1200 through internet. This guitar sounds good, it has solid sitka top and rosewood back and side. And most importantly, it is a couch friendly, comfortable guitar due to its compact size.
    But now the only think I am scared of is "the action height" of this guitar. Is it easy to press the strings down especially on the first and second frets.
    Secondly how is the quality of the SRT 63 preamp?
    Eagerly looking forward to your answer.

    • @MartinCliffe
      @MartinCliffe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Masud, thank you for your comments. I'm glad my video has helped you in your decision. The longer I've had this guitar, the happier I have been with my purchase. I play it several times a week and very much enjoy it.
      For an acoustic guitar, I have found the action to be quite low and comfortable. Acoustics always have higher action than electric guitars, but this is quite comfortable. It could always be lowered by a luthier or tech with a decent set of nut files if needed, but I've never found the need to adjust mine.
      I find the preamp to be a great improvement over the cheaper models. It sounds very good, is very flexible, and the batteries last a long time. The ability to adjust between mic and pickup is very useful, particularly in a live environment, as the mic definitely sounds more authentic, but is more susceptible to feedback.

    Hello Martin, hope you are doing well. Martin it has been around a year I have been depositing money to buy this guitar. By the way, Martin, can you please tell me what is the shape of the neck of this guitar, is it "C, D or V", and is the neck slender or fat and wide?

    • @MartinCliffe
      @MartinCliffe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, that's quite the commitment to buying the guitar, hope you're nearly there!
      I can't find specs on the neck anywhere, but to me it feels like a medium C shape. If you've ever played any of the cheaper APX models, it's very similar - very comfortable and familiar, as if it's designed for electric guitar players. It's a slim neck for an acoustic guitar, certainly much less bulky than the one on my Ovation. The 43mm nut width and flat (400mm radius) fretboard remind me of something like an Ibanez RG, but with a fatter, more comfortable neck than a Wizard. Out of the guitars I have here to compare it to, it's definitely slimmer than a 50s shape Les Paul neck, but a little more meaty than a Suhr Slim C. Sorry I can't be more specific, hope that helps!

      A simple Google tells me 43mm (1 11/16") and 400mm (15¾") - europe.yamaha.com/en/products/musical_instruments/guitars_basses/ac_guitars/apx/specs.html

    I'm glad you DIDN'T record this through the guitar mic or preamp output-- as I'm interested in hearing what an acoustic guitar sounds like as a acoustic, not as an electric. It actually sounds pretty good here, considering.

      NT is just the finish (Natural, as opposed to TBL which is Transparent Black)

    ApX is smaller than CPX?

    • @MartinCliffe
      @MartinCliffe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, APX is the compact body. CPX is more traditionally sized acoustic, wider and deeper
