Let the car idle for 5 minutes before checking the oil. Turn off and wait another 5 minutes. Checking the oil first thing in the morning when the oil is completely cold can lead to incorrect readings.
@@driversteve9345 but in a long period it will decrease that millimeter too much is acceptable, a centimeter or above is not acceptable coz no chance it will decrease
@@drewb.4069 I drive a full 5,000 miles and check my engine oil that has over 207,000 miles and it has not decreased by a millimeter, ever! I change my oil early or when it starting to look dirty and then I change it. I don't fill above that top mark. I fill it about a millimeter away from that top mark. It's there for a reason!!
I'm trying to explain this to a friend. I'm looking for a good example. Unfortunately, many cars, like my Hyundai, have the dipstick nowhere near the top. They can be hard to find.
When you check your oil on the dipstick hold the dipstick down so the oil doesnt run up the dipstick because if it does your reading is wrong And if you Cant See anything on the dipstick because the oil is to clear you can lay the dipstick flat on a blue paper towel and than you can See the Spot on the paper
QUESTION, rule of thumb I have constantly read is change full synthetic every 5000 miles . HOWEVER if you check the oil and it looks decently clean and it's been 5000 miles does it still make sense to change the oil even though it's reached the 5000 mile mark???
Decently clean doesn't mean the oil is good to go. Remember oil oxidation occurs during those times. Honda oil change. Normal: Every 10,000 km (6,000 miles) or 1 year. Severe: Every 5,000 km (3,000 miles) or 6 months.

The dipstick in my kia forte has an orange piece instead of it being all metal. Are the lines on the orange piece supposed to be still readable if the oil is dirty and needs to be changed?
Wait an hour or so for the oil to pool down to get an accurate reading. Turn the stick from side to side to see where the line is. If it still looks like the whole thing is oily, then you’re probably good!
You can check it when it’s either hot or cold, but I’ve found that to get the most accurate reading it’s best to wait until the engine is cold. Usually about 10-15 minutes should be long enough.
When its cold, when it is hot it isnt an accurate reading because the oil gets distributed throughout the whole engine, so it may look like its full when hot, but in reality, its because the oil is flowing
I believe that yes, you can since the dipstick goes directly into the oil pan. Pour it in slowly so that it doesn’t spill. Using a small funnel might be helpful. This can take a lot longer but should still work just fine.
Do you know how small is the hole for the dipstick? You'll probably spill 90% of it. There is an appropriate cap to remove and fill the oil. But, if you THINK you can use the small hole...go right ahead. You're splitting hair with an axe..
WRONG…. All engines need to be at operating temp first and then engine off.. on level ground to check…… this car looks like it wasnt started since yesterday
Usually off. Depending on the age of your car, you might need to turn off the car and let the engine cool down long enough so that the oil can flow back into the oil pan. This will allow you to get an accurate measurement. Usually about 10-15 minutes will do. With newer cars, you can probably check it while the car is running just fine. You can double check with an experienced mechanic or just turn off the car and wait a few minutes just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps!
What a joke, first start the engine and let it run until engine warm up. Then shut off the car and wait for two minutes. Now you can check. This vid is a joke
Check it when it is cold. If your vehicle has been running, turn it off and wait about ten to fifteen minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan. It is also important to park your car somewhere decently flat. Good luck!
I really don't think it matters in most engines. Never heard hot or cold mentioned in an owners manual or service info. For transmissions it def matters.
@@smallsimplestuff2791 You don't have to wait 10 or 15 minutes, when the tech do oil changes they ran the engine for 30 seconds and then check the oil level after 30 seconds.
