I use to fall asleep to this song on 8 track on my first ever, used stereo. I was about 13. Memories. Of course, it was a bootleg 8 track they sold at the swap meet. LOL, about a year later it was on the news that they busted these guys with a two-car garage full of recordings, equipment, and blank tapes, all worth about $40,000!--a lot back in the early 70s.
Did you notice Daniel is a war veteran suffering from PTSD? "Daniel, my brother, you are older than me. Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal? Your eyes have died. You've seen more than I." Ar least that's what I think.
This about a younger brother waving goodbye his older who's going off to war he's telling how much he's gonna miss him and how much pain his brother experienced while at war
I recently read a book about him, boy did he have a mixed up childhood, nis dad didnt want to know him, picked on at school, always on the edge of things yet still managing to make his way in the world, if you get the chance watch the film, Rocketman, it gives you a small look into his life, plus excellent music and a brilliant perfomance bt Taron Edgerton.

It seems like the song that hit number one wasn’t always necessarily the best one. Recalling “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” coming in at number two behind Barry Manilow’s “I Write The Songs” as another head-scratcher.
The story about how Elton and Bernie came together is the stuff of legend. After Elton failed a record company audition, he told the producer he could write music but not lyrics, Williams gave him a batch of poems by someone who had answered the same ad. On the train home, Elton opened the envelope and, struck by what he read, contacted Bernie.
I saw Elton on Sept 21, 1973, the night after Jim Croce died. Elton dedicated this song to him, but was unable to finish..it felt like the whole coliseum was crying. Smoking was allowed inside at that time and lighters flickered throughout the darkened room. It was such a soulful moment.
Thank you for this song. I've been playing this song a lot lately. My life-long friend, Danny, passed away a few months ago. My greeting was always, "Daniel, my brother!" 😢
Elton John and Bernie Taupin were one of the best music collaborators ever. Bernie wrote all the lyrics, gave them to Elton and he made them into a song.
Elton John's music was the soundtrack to my teens and twenties. There are so many of his songs that can transport me to an exact time and place just within a few bars being played.
Lost my younger brother Daniel in 2020 due to a heart attack....this song has a different meaning for me than the lyrics intended now. There are days when i cannot listen to it. Daniel waving goodbye, and Must be the clouds in my eyes are not easy lines to take. We both knew this song when it was new.

I love hearing a love song from one guy to another. Brother to brother, friend to friend, lover to lover, whatever. You don't get that particular vibe of man to man tenderness in much classic rock/pop.
“You are older than me , do you still feel the pain , oh the scars that won’t heal your eyes have died but you see more than I “ Always reminds me of my mom - blind since two , she was and always will be my and many others champion. RIP mommy

The happiest parts of my childhood were hanging out with my teen sister and singing to Elton John. I had a voice like a hinge and no idea what I was singing about but that did nothing to diminish my joy.
This song was sad even before I knew what it was about. "I miss Daniel so much." It's not just Daniel's physical absence, It that Daniel returned from war a different person. It broke him. We know about the casualties, the trauma that soldiers can experience in war, but we don't always think of those back home that end up hurting as. I'm sure the timing was an accident, but tomorrow is Veteran's Day. This song is a reminder that not only the soldiers make sacrifices.
I was really young when this song came out and had always thought this song was about suicide and Daniel’s body is being flown to Spain to be buried as the singer , possibly the little brother , is devastated watching the plane take off and waving goodbye for the last time and he thinks he sees his brother’s spirit as it flies away and he knows he’s at peace. Reading all the comments here apparently I was wrong.😀. Glad to know the intended meaning. Such an amazing song!
That's a great song and a sad one for me, another great Elton song is "Someone Save my life tonight" it's about when he tried to commit suicide in 1970, I'm surprised no one has suggested that one

A few more “All The Young Girls Love Alice” “Sacrifice “ “Gray Seal” “Madman Across The Water” “Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy”. Close your eyes and pick one…it’ll be great.
My first time hearing this was an evening in the 1973-ish era, Sophomore in High school. A friend swooped by to pick me up on our way to co-ed gymnastics practice. But before we even pulled out of the driveway, this song came up on the radio. He adjusted the volume knobs to enhance what we were listening to. We just sat there hearing every word of the story painted by the master. It was heartfelt as by that point in life, we had all lost someone, somewhere at one time or another. By the songs ending tears flowed from us both and it imprinted totally and forever as a "moment". I can still see that light from that sunset. I can still picture my friends curly hair, hazel eyes ~
Remember that Elton arranges the music.. the lyrics are from his long-time musical partner, Bernie Taupin who gets credit for those words that we all love and his special way of putting them together. Early Elton is the best (such as Daniel).. you really need to check out Madman Across The Water from the album with the same title. It is AMAZINGLY beautiful and haunting. You could spend weeks on this rabbit hole. Love the reactions and the channel. Take care all! Oh and as an aside and this is my opinion, but hearing Amber mention Elton's voice going higher.. sadly, he can no longer hit those notes due to surgery that he had to have on his vocal cords sometime in the, I want to say without looking it up, late 80s, early 90s (could be wrong on the time line) but since then, his voice has never been the same, but I still love "Sir" Elton.
This song always makes me teary. It’s just a perfect ballad-perfect lyrics, gorgeous instrumentation, and flawless production. It’s my favorite Elton song of all time.
A beautiful song! I think the next on the list should be Funeral for a friend/ Love lies bleeding. A very proggy, rocking song to show you another facet of Elton John!
Another Elton John track not heard as often as it should be is, "I Feel Like A Bullet (In The Gun Of Robert Ford)." From the 'Rock of the Westies' album.
@@keithjones7390 Couldn't agree more mate, I particularly think his really early stuff could be played a lot more. I been trying though, for the last 50 years, all of my kids and grandkids love early Elton stuff.
@@brianpowell6058 His early stuff was phenomenal, only a couple of later albums were nearly as good, The One and Songs From the West Coast for me had some of the magic and 'warmth' of albums like Madman, Tumbleweed and Yellow Brick Road.
Wilson Phillips covered this song back in the 90s and while I didn’t know the original too well, I really loved that song. My mom never liked it and my aunt later explained that the song came out right after their oldest brother, an Army medic, died trying to save another soldier in Vietnam. She said my grandma always turned it off so the whole family eventually kind of developed an aversion to it. I wish I could’ve met my uncle. He sounded like a really charismatic person
Please react to “Empty Garden (Hey, Hey Johnny)” Elton John wrote it as a tribute to John Lennon after John was shot and killed. They became good friends and even played together. Elton rarely plays this song live because it brings up too many painful memories.
I mean check the guys range .. he goes the whole way from this quiet , reflective, melancholic song all the way to. Crocodile Rock and especially Saturdays all right for fighting … guys got range and staying power , cheers Sir Elton John ,tip of the hat to you Sir 🎩 👍🏴
The tone and lyrics of Daniel are so bitter sweet. Imagine a person who is emotionally scarred but looking for some place to find some happiness. I am sure this is the kind of song that all the people who feel some inner pain go oh yeah, I get this. This song just as such lovely lyrics.
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Philadelphia Freedom", "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me"!!!! Don't let the title scare you off on the second one, starts off slow, then its a banger! edit- Elton's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get! (but its gonna be great).
One of my faves from Elton. I grew up listening to him because my dad was always playing his songs. The line ''Oh god it looks like Daniel'' gets me every time ... I think the emotion of this song passed you by on this occasion.

YES! Before I read your comment, I recommended "Madman Across the Water" -- I also threw in "Honky Cat" for the rock Elton.
This song always reminds me of my older brother who passed away…. 💔💛🦋🙏🏼
This song always reminds me of a younger brother who passed away in a car crash at the age of 19. I know I'll see him again one day, thank the Lord.
"Daniel" is such a lovely, deceptively simple song. I learned to appreciate it as I grew older & understood its meaning better.
Lots of Elton's songs are not heard enough, Holiday Inn, Tower of Babel, The Ballad of Danny Bailey, Blues for Baby and Me and Ticking to name a few.
Have y'all heard Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me with Elton John and George Michael? It's live and incredible!
Crocodile Rock and especially Saturdays all right for fighting … guys got range and staying power , cheers Sir Elton John ,tip of the hat to you Sir 🎩
👍🏴
the way he sings "must be the clooOUd in my eeeeyes" makes me tear up every. single. time.
This is my very very favorite Elton John song💖
The tone and lyrics of Daniel are so bitter sweet. Imagine a person who is emotionally scarred but looking for some place to find some happiness. I am sure this is the kind of song that all the people who feel some inner pain go oh yeah, I get this. This song just as such lovely lyrics.
This is one of Elton’s early hit songs that still resonates even today. The duet was with a Kiki Dee!
Play Philadelphia Freedom on July 4th! 🎇🧨🎆
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me with George Michael live is a banger.
They gotta do Levon
@surlechapeau, well said!!!
One of my faves from Elton. I grew up listening to him because my dad was always playing his songs. The line ''Oh god it looks like Daniel'' gets me every time ... I think the emotion of this song passed you by on this occasion.
Elton's hits still to be heard - Philadelphia Freedom, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Can You Feel the Love Tonight and The Circle of Life (the last two from Lion King). So far, you have only heard songs from his first couple of years when he had hits for at least three decades.
One of the few songs I’ve heard a million times since they came out and I never get tired of
Love this song. Elton was and is fantastic. Soundtrack of high school . One of many.we had such great music back then. The world had its problems then but, hey man we had Elton John.
This is a classic Elton song. Sounds like electric piano on this one.
Do 'Madman Across the Water' or 'Take Me To The Pilot' for something different.
This song was out during the time after my brother 17 was killed in a car wreck. I was almost 14 and starting the 9th grade. It still hits me today and that was almost 50 years ago. Elton and Bernie just spoke to their time and did it so fng good. I think this was about a Vietnam Vet.
Yeah Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is his album masterwork IMO
