Your leader is made of what?? And I love your catch and releases!! I’ve caught and released so far 3 gar and sadly took one home but I love your videos man!!
This is great - I was however hoping to see an unhooking rather than cutting of the line. I'm unfamiliar with large gar fishing however. I imagine it is standard to cut the hook in most cases? Could be more harmful to the fish and potentially yourself to attempt to unhook. Barbless might also allow for an easy unhooking depending on the hookset. A fish as tough as a gar should be able to be fine with a small hook in its mouth like that, especially if it is barbless i imagine it would eventually come out - but would love to hear your thoughts.
to be fair i can catch a carp or a sunfish with the same hook im using, you can slo set 30 seconds into the run to have a better chance of being able to remove the hook.
@@CatchingDinosaurs yeah that is great. I use small hooks to for bowfin/bass fishing probably about the same size you are using which generally is considered too small. Is there a reason to feel bad about leaving it in? I trust you're expertise and investment in the fish's wellbeing, curious to hear what you think. I'm trying to get into gar fishing and unhooking / dealing with the hook is one of the bigger issues im trying to work out in my mind before i go for it
great catch bro started gar fishing recently but haven't had any luck just one that got away and plenty of good runs but i can never seem to set the hook at the right time any tips? how do i know when it's ready to set?
my baits sit on bottom 99% of the time its a slip float and the bobber stop is set at about 15 foot, gar prefer to feed in about 6-14 foot of water most of the time and prefer dead baits on bottom.
literally pointless i put the bronze treble hooks all the guides use in salt water for 13 months and they were just rusty hooks i sharpened one and caught a 6 foot gar on it. tpwd has studied what happens when a gar gets hooked deep they either create a callus over the hook and it just becomes scar tissue or they create an abcess under the hook that helps push it out then they pass it with their waste.
@@CatchingDinosaurs I caught myself thinking, Wot's the diff between his floss and my floss. I think the biggest difference is flavor color and size of the spool (and local availability). But then I thot a little further--gar have lots of teeth to floss! So I might call it gar floss... And yes I'm sure flavored flosses would put them off a little.
Didn’t really get to see how you rigged up your bait, the camera was at a bad angle, no view of the later part of the rigging, but your videos are bad ass man.
Awesome video man! ✌🏻

Nvm brother just saw your other video where your explained what type of leader you were using
@@petehernandez2254 yah no problems with them going through the hollow core leader in going on 3 years
Mind sharing the link to the video of the leader material explanation?

Badass catch
Great video! TY
np thanks for watching
Like your videos sir
Buen video
appreciate you sir
Great video. I live in Romayor pretty close to the Trinity. How can I get in contact with for a guided trip? This is bucket list stuff for me, lol.
So would you still use the same size hook if your casting bait for gar with surf rods? Can’t use float from bank due to gators.
i fish all over the state the exact same way gators dont affect having a float.
@@CatchingDinosaurs well if they wouldn’t go after my float I would but they do.
@@CatchingDinosaurs so do you bottom without float at all?
How long is the drop from your hook to your bobber stop? Just trying to determine if you're fishing on bottom or mid water. Love the videos!

@@CatchingDinosaurs awesome! Thank you for the reply!
@@kkeetr of course man i reply to everyone
nice catch
thank you!
Where do you get the rigging floss
How do you let the fish run while you have your drag set ?
its a baitrunner reel
Could you explain how you use the braided hollow line? Do you run mono through it or what?
its just 4-5 foot of 300# jerry brown hollow core line that im using for leader this is the third year using it and they dont cut it.
You leave the hook in?
How does this rig actually work
Share a video of how you attach hook to that 300lb hollow core.
you just tie it, im using a 6 wrap clinch knot
Maybe I have the wrong hooks I can’t get the 300 hollow core to feed through eyelet lol
@@anthonyestrello3067 cut it with sharp scissors
Where is this river
Can I ask where your bait is sitting is it on bottle 3-foot off the bottom or close to the top. Thanks
the bait sits on bottom in about 6-14 foot of water the float is just a slip float to mark where your bait is then your gar is
@@CatchingDinosaurs you're awesome bud love the video and thanks for the help
@@briandelgado5596 np appreciate you i respond to everyone so any questions lmk.
Thoughts on bronze hooks?

What is the leader called and how many lbs is it ?
550 pound braid from a company called dorisea its on amazon and its cheap/tough
Which food catching for fish
What are you using for a leader
300 pound hollow core from jerry brown its expensive but works extremely well as leader for gar
Did u let the hook inside of her? Or am I seeing stiiff
i did i remove a ton of hooks but sometimes i do leave them in.
@@CatchingDinosaurs oh okay I see so the hook is small enough it won’t hurt them while digestion it
We’re can I get more info for the guides I’m from Houston
you can find me on fb or ig at catching dinosaurs.
You need to use Trouble hooks . Maybe you would stop missing so many gars.
i use dental floss for rigging floss
whatever works
