The "Mass in D minor" Hob. XXII/11 is the 11th of fourteen masses written by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809). It is one of the six masses written near the end of his life, and now seen as one the composer’s greatest single compositions.
When Haydn finished this composition in 1798, there was intense fear in Austria because Napoleon Bonaparte had defeated the Austrian army in four major battles. Haydn even titled the mass "Missa in Angustiis" or 'Mass for troubled times'. But on September 15th, the day of the very first performance, the audience learns that Napoleon had just been dealt a stunning defeat by the British forces led by Admiral Horatio Nelson. Because of this coincidence, the mass gradually acquired the nickname "Lord Nelson Mass".
