Hi. Greetings from ROmania. I never knew how to use PRO before your amazing advices. Didn t tested them yet but I am pretty sure I will do much better than I did before. The only thing I knew before your video aside making photos was to use the focusing but now I think I am at a different level. I have Motorola G14, like a small budget mobile phone and telescopes, also budget ones larger is 127/1000. Hopefully I l get at least Moon, Sun and maybe Jupiter and Saturn decent ones. And why not some stars etc.. :)

Hi Mary, I don't, but it would be worth googling moon photography to see if any other creators have one. The only thing I would say is that you need a long lens, a bit like the telephoto zoom lens in the P30 Pro. This will help you get closer to the moon and fill the frame with it. I also think there is a formula for the settings, called the looney 11 rule ... 😆 the moon is a lot brighter than you'd think so the settings are very different to normal night time photography. The looney 11 rule is that you start with your aperture at f11, and then match your iso number to your shutter speed. so with the camera in manual, set the iso to 100 and then the shutter speed to 1/100, or if the iso is at 400, the shutter at 1/400. This will expose the moon well, but then anything else in the shot will be very dark. I hope that helps.
Very interesting video on the photo possibilities of the new smartphones, I have the P30PRO and I'm very happy with it even if I noticed problems at night with the focus indefinitely, I tried and tried various modes but if I photograph a starry sky the same come out blurred, besides the bright sources of white or yellow turn red, I honestly do not know if it is a defect of my phone in possession , cmq thanks to the tips.
The only way is to shoot in manual focus and play around with it at the infinity point. you might have to move it ever so slightly until it is at the point that works for your phone. It definitely does put a bit more red into the shot...but if you shoot in raw, you should be able to edit this out. Thanks for watching 😁👍
I take photos in night mode on a tripod and then just use Snapseed to edit. Nice photos and don't have to play around with settings. Lazy way to astrophotograph I guess. I have a cheap Oppo Reno4 SE.

I've recently got into astrophotography because I bought the Vivo x60 pro plus, a phone with a Zeiss camera and a huge sensor. Sadly I live in an area with lots of light pollution and looking in the map you used for the video I'm in an orange zone :/ The closest kind of dark zone is a light blue, would that work too?
My galaxy s21+ doesnt allow me to take the iso past 3200, but I seem to get a clearer (less green) image on 800/600 ISO. So far so good, in combination with the Star Walk 2 app I took some pretty nice shots of the night sky!
@@mikesphotography Million thanks for your valuable reply. I am planning visit Thailand in this summer (hopefully). If YES, then sure would like to meet up. I am expecting you in chiang mai :) Where do you stay in Thailand?
My first time and got.interested about astronomy and because of covid19 pandemic were layoff since last year, so sad but theres a employment insurance.by the government. Quick question? What is the setting capturing milkyway core and stars using Huawei P30 camera. TiA.
Thank you for the tutorial! Do you think that its possible to capture the milky way with Galaxy S20? Unfortunately I can't test it out before like September because I live far up north so the nights are way too bright now to see any stars.
Unfortunately I don't have that phone so I couldn't say. If you can take the ISO to 3200 or even 6400, and the shutter speed to 30 seconds, you should be ok to shoot the stars with it. 👍
Unique post, chock full of “how-to” tools, nicely done👍. Would some of the add on camera apps do a better job (e.g., avoid ISO issue) than the phone built-in app? Might make good vid. BTW, will you be photographing this Sat solar eclipse w/ring of fire tha should be visible in your area?
Thanks Paul! I should have tried a few of the apps but I wanted to see what the stock camera app was like...maybe a future video needed. 😁👍 I'm moving house at the moment and don't have a solar filter...but some of my friends will be...Looks like we should get a decent amount of darkening here in dubai. 👍
I am not sure. Maybe it is to do with regional limitations or if it is a different model to mine, they will sometimes limit what the camera can do depending on the price point. Thanks for watching 👍
I'm not sure. If it has manual settings, lets you hold the shutter open for 15-30 seconds, and lets you get the iso up to 3200 to 6400, it should work. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Hi sir! Can i do this on iphone 8 plus? although i’ve downloaded the app called nightcap and i did some research if that app really can do astrophotography, and it really is though. I haven’t tried to shoot yet but can you give me some other more ideas to capture some stars? my bad sir i’m just new to astrophotography, i wanna learn so bad how to shoot. Thankyou in advance if you’ll answerrr, nice video btw.
Here I got a good startrails with my note 7 pro and .. is it possible to get a Milkyway shot with this sensor sony imx 586 in my phone .. is it possible then reply me
Good to hear you got some good star trails with your note 7 pro. I'm not sure if you can get good milkyway shots with that phone. The best bet would be to go out and try it. Thanks for watching 👍
When the moon is out, it does tend to bleach out the stars...it's much better to go out when there is a new moon as the sky will be so much more spectacular. Thanks for watching. 😁👍
Unfortunately I have an iPhone XR in which you have to get a third party app to change ISO and aperture; and even then the highest ISO is 2300 and the longest time you can have the shutter open is just _1 second_. so night sky photography is reallllly hard :/ however, i have found an LG V40 on eBay for sale for $60 and that can have exposures of 30 seconds, so i am extremely excited to try to get my hands on that :) great vid!
I'm using the Samsung galaxy s21 ultra and I have good results in both night mode and fully manual and yes it's not as good as a dedicated camera an lens like you said. as for getting caught up in astrophotography wellll I have been known to go out for a few quick shots and come back to the house just as the first hint of the morning blue hour (actually about 20minutes) and proceed straight to bed 🛌 hoping the mrs is not waking up for a couple hours 🤣
@Mike Smith bribing your better half must be easy 🤣 I would have to make her breakfast or go to town and get her a half dozen donuts 🍩 and a sandwich sometimes I really gotta just forget sleep cause she'll be up and dressed an I hear the following words; so where you taking me for breakfast...those photos better be prize winners 🏆 😆
It will be limited...the best bet would be to go right to iso 3200 and get the shutter speed to 16 seconds...can that phone give you raw files? If so that might help.
@@mikesphotography Yes...it can give me raw files....I'm hoping to get some images..thank you so much for the reply.... I'm a big fan of astrophotography...❤
You can either use something like dropbox, or google images. Then if the computer is logged on to the same account, you should be able to access them from both devices.
@@mikesphotography Tried that and could not get it to work. I found a connector which can plug into the cell phone and a USB plug on my computer. I was told that if I connect the phone to the computer, Windows 10 would recognize the new device and query if I wanted to down load the pictures. I tried. Did not work. A friend of mine had an Android phone and I tried it worked fine. Think their might be something wrong with my Motorola 9 cell phone.
I took a pic of the stars using my phone and i captured a group of stars that looks like the milky way. But it could be a cloud with stars :/ btw i used a Huawei nova 3
It depends on how dark the location is. I've seen it with my own eyes in the desert in the Middle East and also in Morocco. But in the UK, it sometimes looks more like a faint cloud.
Astro is a little different in a lot of cameras. Normally I wouldn't go that high at all, but shooting the stars you can get away with a lot more. I can't remember how high I went as I made this about a year ago and haven't had the chance to go out again, but I think I was shooting either at 3200 or 6400. 👍
I have no idea how you got the results you die I shot mine at ISO 640 and 2 sec. I set the focus by picking a distant light and then focusing on it. It was a few clicks below the max range for infinity. I only took a straight random picture of just a night sky. But had pinpoint stars and good contrast. There is no absolute this is the way to do it. It took me about 10 shoots to get it right. But I had done quite a bit of real astrophotography. cheers
The settings you are using aren't the best to get any part of the milkyway in your photograph. At 2 seconds and ISO 640, this is 7 times less light than with these settings I was using ... and that isn't taking into account the aperture your camera has either. You also didn't mention what the bortle rating was at the location you were at or how much moonlight there was at the time you took it. You are right that there are different ways to get the same thing in photography, but with wide field astrophotography, the settings do fall into quite a narrow range as it normally is in really dark locations, with very little light apart from that which is emitted from the stars and the milkyway ... which are at constant luminance. If you were getting a good exposure with the settings you were using, that suggests that there was too much light pollution, and this would bleach out the stars and the milkyway, so this would be why you are not getting the same results. Thanks for watching 👍
Black Shark 3 Pro does almost as well even thought it is a gaming phone and even my old ZTE ZMax Pro with it's 80 second exposure limit was able to capture the Milky way in color but not as sharp.
1600 ISO, 20sec shutter. If still white, start reducing the iso and keep shutter constant. The main problem might be light pollution. We are trying to amplify the star light. If you are in a city you will end up amplifying the light pollution.
This was Al Razeen, an hour or so east of Abu Dhabi. There's also Al Qudra which is really close to Dubai...and then Liwa...which is about 3.5 hours from dubai... All you need to do is get away from the street lights, the further away, the better the skies become. 👍
Great video! I love using my Huawei P30 Pro for astrophotography. I am lucky because on hollidays we go to Italy to my grandmother and she lives in the mountains. There is basically no lightpollution becaus it's in a rural area far from cities. Feel free to checkout my instagram for some pictures I took :) All of my astrophotography pictures are made with the Huawei P30 Pro.
Yeah, light pollution is sooo annoying. The best bet is to try and get out into the countryside away from cities and lights...then the milkway will be much easier to photograph. 😁👍

I have Motorola G14, like a small budget mobile phone and telescopes, also budget ones larger is 127/1000. Hopefully I l get at least Moon, Sun and maybe Jupiter and Saturn decent ones. And why not some stars etc.. :)
great video as always Mike! keep ‘em coming!
Thanks so much Francesco! 😁👍
I have one p30 pro and i will take a photo with your kindly information 📸🥰
Great to hear!! It is a fantastic camera and I was really surprised with the results!!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
I'm redmi note 7 pro user it has 48 megapixel camera and I have doubt when i click photos in raw they are not much detailed but when I do in jpg they are more detailed than raw and quality is also good just difference in size raw size(higher than jpg) what should I do shall I just keep taking from jpg?
Do you have any settings for taking Moon shots with your android phone? Great videos!
Loved the tips i got interested to photography espically in astronomy but im just little concerned with my phone im using oppo47 is that ok?
I take photos in night mode on a tripod and then just use Snapseed to edit. Nice photos and don't have to play around with settings. Lazy way to astrophotograph I guess. I have a cheap Oppo Reno4 SE.
Fantastic video I love astrophotography and never knew you can take a picture of the milky-way with a phone, i am really spoilt in south Wales costal, valley's, lakes and forest I cant wait to get out... please please can you do more with the huawei I am such a novice... Thank you so much for taking your time and giving advice... Thank you so much
Great to hear you liked the tutorial Craig. It is amazing what you can do with a camera phone nowadays!
You very much are spoilt for choice with locations...I love it down there...and Pen Y Fan is not too far away either!!
I have a few more tutorials with my camera phone planned, so keep an eye out for them.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
I've recently got into astrophotography because I bought the Vivo x60 pro plus, a phone with a Zeiss camera and a huge sensor. Sadly I live in an area with lots of light pollution and looking in the map you used for the video I'm in an orange zone :/
The closest kind of dark zone is a light blue, would that work too?
My galaxy s21+ doesnt allow me to take the iso past 3200, but I seem to get a clearer (less green) image on 800/600 ISO. So far so good, in combination with the Star Walk 2 app I took some pretty nice shots of the night sky!
That's great to hear you are getting clean images at 800 ISO.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Mike, I saw the Dubai car photo in the video. Next time you are around, let me know dear. It would be worth meeting you for Astro :)
Hi Aqeel,
Unfortunately I don't live in Dubai any more, my wife and I moved away to Thailand last year.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Million thanks for your valuable reply. I am planning visit Thailand in this summer (hopefully). If YES, then sure would like to meet up. I am expecting you in chiang mai :) Where do you stay in Thailand?
My first time and got.interested about astronomy and because of covid19 pandemic were layoff since last year, so sad but theres a employment insurance.by the government. Quick question? What is the setting capturing milkyway core and stars using Huawei P30 camera. TiA.
I'am see this videos is n-i-c-e
But i ask whats that work on Huawei P9 Lite Or Higher P-series?
Thank you for the tutorial! Do you think that its possible to capture the milky way with Galaxy S20? Unfortunately I can't test it out before like September because I live far up north so the nights are way too bright now to see any stars.
Unfortunately I don't have that phone so I couldn't say. If you can take the ISO to 3200 or even 6400, and the shutter speed to 30 seconds, you should be ok to shoot the stars with it. 👍
@@mikesphotography Thank you for the answer!
My friend got me into astrophotography 😂 also thanks for the video! I can use my P30 Pro for some amazing shots
That's great to hear!! It really is good fun isn't it!!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Unique post, chock full of “how-to” tools, nicely done👍. Would some of the add on camera apps do a better job (e.g., avoid ISO issue) than the phone built-in app? Might make good vid. BTW, will you be photographing this Sat solar eclipse w/ring of fire tha should be visible in your area?
Thanks Paul! I should have tried a few of the apps but I wanted to see what the stock camera app was like...maybe a future video needed. 😁👍
I'm moving house at the moment and don't have a solar filter...but some of my friends will be...Looks like we should get a decent amount of darkening here in dubai. 👍
thank you, I will try this when I buy my new phone ( Vivo X60 pro plus )
Great to hear, Let me know how you get on! 😁👍
You're sooooo epiiiiic!!!!!!!!

Hey Awesome Video! Could You also make a video on editing these pictures for bignners like me using adobe Photoshop?

Hello, I'm just asking why some phone (same unit as mine) supports a 1/1000 ss and raw file feature in their unit, while i don't have those features?
I am not sure. Maybe it is to do with regional limitations or if it is a different model to mine, they will sometimes limit what the camera can do depending on the price point.
Thanks for watching 👍
Hey man, will Samsung s21 will work ?
I'm not sure. If it has manual settings, lets you hold the shutter open for 15-30 seconds, and lets you get the iso up to 3200 to 6400, it should work.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Thanks man
U need to buy an android which has a better camera and manual mode. It is mightly impossible to shoot good pictures of sky with iphone
Nashville, TN here and can't get out 100 miles without another town or city
I know what you mean...I live in Bangkok at the moment and there is not a dark sky anywhere near me...so frustrating...
@@mikesphotography ik and my phones max iso on manuel mode is 1600 and 1/3 shutter speed and 4400 mainly for auto is that enough?
Here I got a good startrails with my note 7 pro and .. is it possible to get a Milkyway shot with this sensor sony imx 586 in my phone .. is it possible then reply me
Good to hear you got some good star trails with your note 7 pro. I'm not sure if you can get good milkyway shots with that phone. The best bet would be to go out and try it.
Thanks for watching 👍
Is it good if we still take a shot even if the moon is too bright?
When the moon is out, it does tend to bleach out the stars...it's much better to go out when there is a new moon as the sky will be so much more spectacular.
Thanks for watching. 😁👍
Pixel phones have crazy good astro photography
Yes they do...I'd like to get one to try out soon. 😁👍
Well sticking to auto. Phew!
Haha! Auto keeps things simple...
Unfortunately I have an iPhone XR in which you have to get a third party app to change ISO and aperture; and even then the highest ISO is 2300 and the longest time you can have the shutter open is just _1 second_. so night sky photography is reallllly hard :/
however, i have found an LG V40 on eBay for sale for $60 and that can have exposures of 30 seconds, so i am extremely excited to try to get my hands on that :)
great vid!
Lg v30 have way better photos than not latest iphone
I'm using the Samsung galaxy s21 ultra and I have good results in both night mode and fully manual and yes it's not as good as a dedicated camera an lens like you said. as for getting caught up in astrophotography wellll I have been known to go out for a few quick shots and come back to the house just as the first hint of the morning blue hour (actually about 20minutes) and proceed straight to bed 🛌 hoping the mrs is not waking up for a couple hours 🤣
Haha!! As long as you have super stealth skills, this can work!! ... and failing that, a nice cup of coffee for her!! 😆😆
@Mike Smith bribing your better half must be easy 🤣 I would have to make her breakfast or go to town and get her a half dozen donuts 🍩 and a sandwich sometimes I really gotta just forget sleep cause she'll be up and dressed an I hear the following words; so where you taking me for breakfast...those photos better be prize winners 🏆 😆
i did long time ago with samsung :) night turn to day :D
Good to hear it works with the samsung! 👍

Will it work with samsung a73
sir is that static electricity 😂😂
Always...I like to rub a balloon before I go out...😆
Is it a good idea to shoot on a beach?
Thank u sir
Yes, just be careful if it is windy or if there is a lot of sea moisture in the air. This could mess with the final image.
will i get similar results with a huawei p30 lite?
I think the p30lite isn't quite as good in low light...it would be worth going out and trying it though. 👍
Which phone you used in video? (Sorry, for my bad English)
This is the huawei P90pro
Thx
No worries, thanks for watching. 😁👍
Is there a phone app for long exposure for Android ?
I don't know...there probably is...but I haven't looked for one as the p30pro deos everything I need in the built in camera app. 👍
U have an android phone with no manual settings?😳
I just captured the milky way last july it look good for me😅
Good to hear. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography when i choose cameras in photopills does it actually change the setting of my camera?
No it doesn't, it just gets the info from a list it has stored in the app.
What about stacking astrophotography images?
Yep, you can do that as well. It'll give you a cleaner final image. 👍
I have a question, Can it be pictured on iPad?
I don't think so cuz it's gonna need a big smartphone sensor
P30 pro is a monster 👹
Haha! Indeed it is!! 😁👍
Love from india
Thanks so much Adhithyan! 😁👍
Im 1 year late but. Can it work in Vivo Y11
I have vivo y11....It's only allow me to change ISO between 100-3200 and minimum shutter speed of 16 sec. Can i capture the milky way with this?
It will be limited...the best bet would be to go right to iso 3200 and get the shutter speed to 16 seconds...can that phone give you raw files? If so that might help.
@@mikesphotography Yes...it can give me raw files....I'm hoping to get some images..thank you so much for the reply.... I'm a big fan of astrophotography...❤
No worries. Astrophotography is so much fun, and when you go to the really dark locations, you get to see some amazing night skies. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Thank u very much...❤
How might one get the photographs from the cell phone into the computer? I am kind of an idiot.
Can you please tell that do we see the milky way from our eyes or it seems all dark ?
It depends on how dark the location is. I've seen it with my own eyes in the desert in the Middle East and also in Morocco. But in the UK, it sometimes looks more like a faint cloud.
Could you try with iPhone 11?
If apple would lend me one, I would definitely do it!! 😁👍
Mike Smith could you look at the photos I took with the iPhone 11 that I sent to you
Did you send them by email? I've been slack at replying to emails but I'm going to get on to it today. 👍
Mike Smith on Instagram. Dayphotos2020
Iphone is the worst phone for astrophotography unfortunately. No manual mode etc
You really went all the way up to ISO 6400?!! that's insane. In my Samsung S20 Ultra I barely go with 600 otherwise I'll get so much noise
Astro is a little different in a lot of cameras. Normally I wouldn't go that high at all, but shooting the stars you can get away with a lot more. I can't remember how high I went as I made this about a year ago and haven't had the chance to go out again, but I think I was shooting either at 3200 or 6400. 👍
@@mikesphotography Thanks for the feedback
Where was this location?
This is al Razeen.
Hi I also capture the milky way Galaxy but result is not better
Where can I see the thumnail cat????? Please let me know!
...ummmm...🤔
Thanks for watching 👍
add Xiaomi Mi 9t Pro for the list of phone that can capture Milky way
Black Shark 3 Pro does almost as well even thought it is a gaming phone and even my old ZTE ZMax Pro with it's 80 second exposure limit was able to capture the Milky way in color but not as sharp.
can anyone help me? i cant make it work on a xiaomi poco x3. image is all white. any suggested settings for poco x3?
1600 ISO, 20sec shutter. If still white, start reducing the iso and keep shutter constant. The main problem might be light pollution. We are trying to amplify the star light. If you are in a city you will end up amplifying the light pollution.
@@abhi_rgr okay thanks. ill try it tonight.
now i want to take picture of the sun with iso pro adjust
That would be interesting...🤔
Use Sony Xperia 1 ii & xperia pro to shoot astrography
Nowadays most of them do a good job. 👍
I have nova 9
P30 pro is a legend, always the huawei brand but Google ruined it
👍
Does anyone know where he went to see those stars?
This was Al Razeen, an hour or so east of Abu Dhabi.
There's also Al Qudra which is really close to Dubai...and then Liwa...which is about 3.5 hours from dubai...
All you need to do is get away from the street lights, the further away, the better the skies become. 👍
Need to short sony xperia
Im using pocophone f1+gcam atleast 10 photo and stacked by sequator to get some awesome milkyway photo😂😂😂
What do i do if the photo is plain black?
You need to let more light in to your camera, so increase the ISO or increase the exposure time.
Can i do this on iphone 8 😔
Probably not...
Hi you need a phone that has manual mode. If you take a photo that does not have manual settings at the night sky it will only be a black photo.
Bro my max sutter speed is 10 wht can i do help me plz
It might be to do with the design of the camera phone you have... some limit the maximum amount of time the shutter can be open for. 👍
@@mikesphotography i have samsung a73 givs some tips
Great video! I love using my Huawei P30 Pro for astrophotography. I am lucky because on hollidays we go to Italy to my grandmother and she lives in the mountains. There is basically no lightpollution becaus it's in a rural area far from cities. Feel free to checkout my instagram for some pictures I took :) All of my astrophotography pictures are made with the Huawei P30 Pro.

How to locate the milky way in night sky
Theres a free app and website called Stellarium.
There are also paid apps like photopills, the photographers ephemeris and planit-pro
👍
Im always trying but cant get the milkyway. I think coz of the light pollution.
Yeah, light pollution is sooo annoying. The best bet is to try and get out into the countryside away from cities and lights...then the milkway will be much easier to photograph. 😁👍
